Mirror Image Question

So in my weekly game this last weekend my players ran into an Illusionist. About half way through the combat she cast Mirror Image on herself as the melee moved in closer to her. Only issue was when reading the spell it wasnt clear how to resolve whether they hit an image or the real person. the wording directly from the spell says "Whenever you are attacked or are the target of a spell that requires an attack roll, there is a possibility that the attack targets one of your images instead. If the attack is a hit, roll randomly to see whether the selected target is real or a figment. If it is a figment, the figment is destroyed. If the attack misses by 5 or less, one of your figments is destroyed by the near miss".
This wording caused some confusion both for myself as DM and my players as to how to resolve, in the end I had to just wing it with a d100 roll. Just wondering how other GMs or players have dealt with this spell as it seem like its missing something?

My group uses a single die roll. Say there are 5 images and the illuionist. We will designate the illusionist as 6 and images as 1,2,3,4, and 5. Then we roll. If you roll a six then you hit. If you roll anything else it takes out an image.

Then just adjust dice as necessary.

We usually play it like this:

Make an attack roll vs AC:
A) it misses by more than 5, nothing happens
B) it misses by 5 or less, 1 image is destroyed
C) it matches AC or is higher:

1 image = 1d2
2 images = 1d3
3 images = 1d4
etc.

Pick a number before the roll which would indicate a hit on the real creature. (if no number is stated, assume a 1 hits the creature and any other number hits an image)

This is how I run it as well.

Yep, it is just that simple. The only issue is when you have 6 images so you need to generate a number between 1 and 7. As a DM, I roll a d8 and just call out 1 hits the caster and 8 is a reroll. If it is 2 through 7 then it is an image. Never have a problem so long as I just say it aloud right before I roll.

Wow thanks for your response on this, don't know why I didnt think of that, it would have been much simpler than how we did it. Funny thing is I play an Illusionist in another game and I have this spell memorized but always forget to cast it but after seeing how useful it was this weekend I am defintely going to use it going forward and use your methods for it.
