Hi,
I haven't played any tabletop games before and I am just waiting for the pathfinder beginner box to be delivered having read a start to finish adventure via forums.
I have good experience with computer game RPGs across the last 15 years so I do have some understanding of races, classes, stat bonuses and penalties, experience, levelling up etc etc but it is still a lot of new stuff.
I am trying to create a new character now, I have decided a lot of the details already and have come up with so far
Cragstor Morellious
Dwarf
1st-Level Foehammer (alternative archetype, using only hammers, or so I read)
Male
Medium height and weight
Neutral Good
Born in Kalsgard with loose beliefs when it comes to religion to Torag
Stats
Str - 16
Dex - 12
Const - 16 (+2 racial)
int - 10
Wis - 15 (+2 racial)
Char - 8 (-2 racial)
Feats
Power attack
Skills
??
Equipment
??
I still can't work out exactly how skills are worked out, have not really delved into equipment at the moment and I need a more fleshed out backstory, but on the whole I want to be a generally care free dwarf, not quite as stubborn and standoff-ish as the ones I have been brought up with. A bit headstrong when it comes to conflict and confrontation, and quite prone to lifting the hammer before thinking, that said Cragstor would generally do what was right, but perceptive when he needs to be.
Basically I am after advise as to whether I am even making a legal character, I think I am based on what I have been reading but any help and advise for both building the character and finding games in the future would be really appreciated, I am especially interested in pbf games at the moment to try to get into it slowly.
Thanks,
Craig

Skills are basically a sum of the ranks in the skill, the modifier given by the associated ability score, a +3 bonus if the skill is a class skill (listed as such in the class/archetype writeup), and any other bonuses or penalties that apply, such as gnomes' and elves' keen senses.
Questions of legality for any portions of a character can usually be found in the Guide to Organized Play, and the Additional Resources which tells you if material from books other than the Core Rulebook (CRB) are used in Organized Play or not.
There are several sources for finding games. Around here, most organizers use Warhorn.net to coordinate their games.
Hope this helps!

Major issues:
For Pathfinder Society play, you need to own the sourcebook for any character feature beyond the core rules (Core Rulebook and Advanced Player's Guide) you use. It looks like Foehammer comes from the Advanced Race Guide, so you need to own a copy of that book (either physical or official PDF) in order to use that archetype.
All characters get a Feat every odd character level (1, 3, 5, etc.).
Fighters get a bonus 'combat' feat at Fighter 1, and again every 'even' level of fighter (so 1, 2, 4, 6, etc.).
As such, a Fighter 1 would have TWO feats instead of just one: One has to be a 'Combat' feat (which Power Attack is) and the other can be any feat you are qualified for.
PFS characters need to pick a Society faction as well: These are detailed in the free 'Guide to Organized Play' download.
All PFS characters also get a pair of Traits at character creation as well. I'm not familiar with the beginner box, but hopefully it will have a few decent choices for you. There are also a few faction based options in the 'guide to organized play.'

In my opinion, it is best to begin with face-to-face games. I think you will pick things up fastest that way.

For Pathfinder Society play, you need to own the sourcebook for any character feature beyond the core rules (Core Rulebook and Advanced Player's Guide) you use.
A few things to note:
(1) The Advanced Players Guide is not part of the Core Assumption (Core Rulebook plus the free Guide to PFS).(2) You actually need to own any book that you use material out of, including the Core Rulebook. (PDF copies are okay if they have your watermark; the Core Rulebook PDF is $10, and a good way to get started on the cheap).
(3) The Beginner Box is not a legal source.

Ah ok, well all of that makes sense - and I will definitely purchase everything I need once I get more of an understanding. my problem with face to face events is the location, I'm from England and it seems like nobody has anything going on at all on the events page in the UK.
This also causes a problem when I order things, I tried to order the beginner box from this website for example but the shipping was tripled the price, and then after import tax it just becomes too much. The beginner box I bought from a UK site who expects to have stock from 14th Feb, unfortunately I am still waiting for a confirmation of stock/dispatch on the 16th.
the stocks are very limited around the UK it seems for everything, the PDF versions will probably be the way to go for most of my information, but I specifically wanted the beginner box for the board, units and general polish that comes with buying something from a box.

There's a free PDF specifically designed to help transition you from Beginner Box play to Pathfinder Society that you'll likely find useful once you've run some BB games.
Also, don't forget the Pathfinder PRD, which covers mechanical bits like character creation (and a lot more), and PathfinderWiki to cover the Pathfinder game setting.
UK PFS officers may also be able to help you get started with Pathfinder Society play, even if you don't intend to play face-to-face. I'm not sure where in England you're located, but a good place to start might be with the people running Paizocon UK. Specifically, check out the GMs/players wanted page--I'm not sure how up-to-date it is, but there are contact links for the people running several UK lodges.

Download the free Guide to Pathfinder Society. In the back are all of the Venture Officers. There are four listed for England. One of them will be able to find you a game.
Also, you might find games listed at

You won't regret the Beginners Box. It is a slightly different (slimmed-down) game than the regular game. But it is high quality, and has components (map, dice, pawns) that are useful in the regular game. It is also great for introducing friends and family to the game.

It would be helpful to know roughly where you are.
While there's nothing on the events page (because the 'core' PFS players are in a long-term campaign), I know someone is going to start running PFS sessions at our games club (Chester) imminently.

Oh really? I live about an hour away from Chester and go there quite a lot. I live near Cheshire, Crewe.
I have looked and see I can still get the core rulebook without too much hassle on Amazon for a decent price, I guess it was just the beginner box that is relatively hard to get hold of right now.
Thank you all for the feedback.
