Smashing a wall / object with a Symbol on it?

What happens to the Symbol if the object or wall it's placed on is sundered or otherwise destroyed?
I presume the spell effects continue as it wasn't dispelled?

"Destruction of the surface where a symbol of death is inscribed destroys the symbol but also triggers it."

You get the effect, but the symbol will not work for additional rounds to come.
Example: You make a Symbol of Death that will kill a total of 150 HP in creatures.
Seven Creatures with 10 HP each walk up to the symbol but dont trigger it. They start smashing the Wall in, triggering the rune in the process, they all die, but the symbol also gets destroyed. the next round 10 more 10hp creatures enter the area of the symbol. since the symbol was destroyed, they live, if the symbol hadn't been destroyed 8 more would die.
