Adventure Paths - Purchasing Magic Items

My party of 6 is about to complete the Shards of Sin. To keep the game balanced I've found that I've had to increase the monsters by 50% or make them 'advanced'.

I've recently been asked what items the group can buy in Magnimar. From what I understand the modules are desiged for the players to find everything that they need to complete the adventure and I'm concerned that, buy purchasing additional magic, it will unbalance the game further.

Of course there are only sufficient magic items for 4 characters so some of them are missing out already.

I guess what I'm asking, is should I allow them to purchase any items that they have the gold for, or should I try to minimise what is available to keep things balanced.

Any help would be appreciated.

Prux.

Magnimar is between a Large City and a Metropolis (based on the Players Guide) so I bumped it to Metropolis.

Based in THIS GUIDE, I let them buy most anything they wanted, within reason.

Thanks David, much appreciated.

The way I did it is allow my group to buy anything they'd like that is less than 8,000 gp. Items between 8,000 and 32,000 gp only have a 75% chance of being available this week. A new check can be made every week.

Remember that if you're using the Fate/Prestige Point system, they quickly get to shave off 10% from the cost of items below 10,000 gp.

All of this has worked out fine for my group of 4 PCs, 15-point buy. With 6 PCs, I'd advise you to keep the treasures in the scenario as they are, and to not increase them to their 6-PC equivalent. The AP already gives out a lot of treasure (and powerful artifacts, and free ioun stones), so your 6 PCs should still be fine and it'll make your GM life easier.

Hi Olwen,

Thanks for the advice. One of the big problems that I have is that we did not use a point buy system. Instead the players generated their stats by rolling 3d6. They did this in 3 sets, then selected the best set. Needless to say, they have some pretty good stats, which is further impacting the game and it is something that I certainly would not do again. In an effort to even out the game I'm pretty much using advanced templates for everything, which has balanced things out nicely, but does add an little bit of extra work.

I'll reiterate that I certainly would not use that stat generation system again.

Regards

The stats for the city of Magnimar can be found on a couple of books. The relevent ones for your case are those:
Base Value 12,800 gp; Purchase Limit 75,000 gp;
Spellcasting 8th
Minor Items 4d4; Medium Items 3d4; Major Items 2d4

Can anyone give me a rundown on how to use this? Or tell me where I can find the rundown on how to use this.

Like, does this mean at any given time there are a max of 36 magic items available in a major city? That seems way too low. Does spellcasting 8th mean 8th level spells or 8th level casters?

3 people marked this as a favorite.

Spellcasting 8th means 8th level spells for spellcasting services, in Magnimar's case it's 8th level arcane and 7th level divine*.

You can find how to use the statblock in the core rulebook but i will try to explain it here.

The Base Value stat means that any magical item that it's price is <=Base Value has a 75% chance of being available for purchase each week. In addition each mundane item that it's price is <=Base Value has a 100% chance of being available for purchase.

The Purchase Limit stat means that the settlement can pay at maximum Purchase Limit for a single item.

The Minor Items,Medium Items and Major Items are the number of random magic items, of each category, that are available each week (this might be per month i am not sure). I like to use this in order to generate random magic items (select kingdom treasure).

*unless the players somehow learn of the secret evil 15th level cleric of Norgorber who hides in the city and they don't have a problem asking him for help and get him to do spellcasting services for them.

Thanks for this, I've a pretty good handle on the system from a character/monster mechanics stuff, I've just never had that much cause to learn some of the more setting based rules like this.
