Hello All,
I am familiar with pathfinder but by no means an expert. I been playing since last June.
I recently created a basic level one human fighter with the feats Shield focus, Saving Shield, and Missle Shield. I gave him a superhero complex + compulsive over-protectiveness for a personality. He was suprisingly more fun to play than I had expected. I think I only got hit once the entire encounter. The fun part was frequently using the "Saving Shield" feat; (whenever an adjacent ally is the target of an attack, you can, as an immediate action (i.e. once a turn), grant that adjacent ally a +2 shield bonus to AC). There was a few times that +2 AC bonus prevented what would have been successful attacks. I didn't get to use Missle Shield feat as I was never attacked with a ranged weapon. I also noticed that the adventuring party was sticking close to me, which usually rarely happens. Most game sessions the party usually splits up during combat.
My character hasn't reached second level yet, so I decided to re-work the character to see if I could improve on the "Captain America" theme. BTW, I am not a Min/Max'er, but do appreciate efficient and effective character choices. Basically, I want this human fighter to use a shield, and focus on defending his allies. I stumbled across an awesome feat that was begging to implemented on this character.
It is the "Bodyguard" feat; (when an adjacent ally is attacked, you may use an attack of opportunity to attempt the aid another action to improve your ally’s AC. You may not use the aid another action to improve your ally’s attack roll with this attack.)
At first I thought could combind this feat with Saving Shield to give an ally +4 to AC, but after discussing it with some other PFS people in my group it was decided that I could not perform two actions from one trigger. I did learn however that the effects of multiple Aid Another actions do stack.
I also stumbled across the halfling racial trait "Helpful" which allows the character to provide a +4 rather than a +2 bonus when using the Aid Another standard action. Being a human, I chose the Adopted feat and selected that one.
I also found the trait "Defender of the Society" which gives me a bonus +1 to AC if wearing Medium of Heavy Armor. Seems like a no brainer.
I looked at different classes and archetypes. The Cavalier seemed too focused on horses which I have never used in all the games I have played since June. Also, I just wasn't impressed with the teamwork feats and being limited to once a day sucks. The religous theme of the paladin just didn't fit with my idea for this character. I finally settled on the "Unbreakable" archetype of the fighter Class. Getting Endurance and Diehard for my one bonus combat feat at first level was nice and getting the "Heroic" feats later sold me on the theme.
So at 1st level I have Endurance, Diehard, Combat Reflexes, and Body Guard. I have 12 Str, 16 Dex, 16 Con, and 10 in everything else (I hate negative penalties). I am focusing on Dex and Con with this character. Dex for the AC bonus and extra Attacks of Opportunities. Con for the Heroic feats.
I learned that as my standard action on my turn I can perform Aid another (granting +4 to the AC of an adjacent Ally) and then use my Attacks of Opportunities to repeat the actions if my adjacent ally is attacked before or after my turn. I can potentially give one ally +8 to their AC! I want to purchase a Shield of Guarding (eventually upgrading to Greater Guarding) and Armor of Benevolence as soon as possible.
I do know that I want to take the following feats for sure keeping in theme with my idea;
"In Harm's Way" - While using the aid another action to improve an adjacent ally’s AC, you can intercept a successful attack against that ally as an immediate action, taking full damage from that attack and any associated effects (bleed, poison, etc.). A creature cannot benefit from this feat more than once per attack.
"Shield Focus" - Increase the AC bonus granted by any shield you are using by 1.
"Greater Shield Focus" - Increase the AC bonus granted by any shield you are using by 1. This bonus stacks with the bonus granted by Shield Focus.
"Heroic Recovery" - Once per day as a standard action you may attempt a new saving throw against a harmful condition or affliction requiring a Fortitude save that is affecting you. If this save against the affliction fails, there is no additional effect, but a successful save counts toward curing an affliction such as poison or disease. You cannot use this feat to recover from instantaneous effects, effects that do not allow a saving throw, or effects that do not require a Fortitude save.
"Heroic Defiance" - Once per day as an immediate action you can delay the onset of one harmful condition or affliction (such as panicked, paralyzed, stunned, and so on), including permanent and instantaneous conditions. Activating this feat delays the onset of the condition until the end of your next turn, after which time the condition takes its normal effect. This feat has no effect on hit point damage or ability damage.
What do you think? What changes would you do? What other feats do you recommend?

Hi Jason,
Putting Allying on your shield spikes/weapon, and Benevolent on your armor is a sure-fire way to increase your Aid Another bonus. Both add the enhancement bonus of your weapon and armor to your Aid Another bonus.
Gloves of Arcane Striking also increase your Aid Another bonus when using the Arcane Strike feat -- but with your Saving Shield feat, it might not be terribly useful, since Arcane Strike also uses up a swift. Plus, you need arcane caster levels. Noted here anyway for completeness. (My witch-bodyguard uses these)
If you really want to take the Captain America thing to its fullest, take a look at throwing shields (requires exotic weapon proficiency). Lets you lob your shield Captain America style. If you also make it a quickdraw shield and have the quickdraw feat, you can put your shield on this handy-dandy belt and make a full attack... with your shield. *fling* *bonk* *fling* *bonk* *fling* *bonk* Works with rapid shot for an extra shield throw per round.
Also, be advised that when using the bodyguard feat, your current GM may rule differently than the last GM as to how it functions (as is my case nearly every time I play my bodyguard character).
Some GMs have it operate more like step up and strike feat where it's using up your attack of opportunity for the round, but doesn't require you to meet the AoO conditions. In this case, you could bodyguard from 2nd rank behind your buddy or through a hard corner. If your GM rules that you're literally making an AoO, then you can't bodyguard in any instance where you can't make an AoO -- e.g. cover, invisible threat, flat footed, etc.
So, just be aware you may have to adjust your character's tactics depending on how your GM rules bodyguard.

One thing I would caution against is using the Aid Another action. This grants an ally a bonus against a Single attack. You are giving up your standard action (typically an "offense" action) to maybe stop one attack on one ally - IF you are adjacent to that ally and IF that ally is attacked and IF that ally needs your help.
I have seen a couple very effective builds around this, but it requires really good tactics. The best build is generally for a Halfing, because there are some Halfling Feats in the advanced race guide that are great for this: Blundering Defense. This allows you to confer a bonus to ALL adjacent allies, even while fighting defensively.
If you're set on being Captain America as a Human, the Halfling option won't work. Sadly, I could not find a way to "Throw a Shield" (which would be awesome).
Some fun Feat options for Shield fighting would be to use a Heavy, Spiked, Bashing Shield - which many people think deals 2d6 damage (others may think it only does 1d8, ymmv). In any case the feat tree would be:
Improved Shield Bash (let's you attack with your shield and keep the AC bonus)
Maybe add the Overrun and/or Bull Rush feats, including
Improved Overrun
Improved Bull Rush
Charge Through
Greater Bull Rush
Greater Overrun
There's also a cool Shield feat called Shield Slam (requires two weapon fighting) that lets you get free Bull Rush with your Shield Bashes
In order to make the build a bit more damage/combat effective, I'd recommend
18 STR 14 DEX 14 CON (10 wis, 10 int, 10 chr)
If you need the two-weapon fighting, you can either take two levels of Ranger (gets it for free if you're in medium armor), or dump your CHR to 08 to get a 15 DEX.
Two-weapon fighting isn't that useful to you unless you use another weapon (Cpt America would PUNCH with Improved Unarmed Strike)
I would discourage the Endurance and Die Hard feats as they mechanically add very little to a character.
As a Human Fighter, your feat progression might look like:
Level 1: Imp Shield Bash, Saving Shield, Combat Reflexes
Level 2: Bodyguard
Level 3: Improved Unarmed Strike
level 4: Shield Focus
level 5: Two-Weapon Fighting [Weapon Training: CLOSE group]
Level 6: Shield Slam
then it's a matter of what feats are most important to you:
more shield bumps, weapon focus/specialization with the shield, the ability to overrun or bull rush better, DODGE, etc.
A fighter's Bravery ability is great for Cpt America (bonus to fear saves) so be sure to pick up a Sash of the War Champion (4000gp, makes you 4 levels higher for bravery and armor training).
Cpt. America is more of an un-armored guy, so I wonder if a Dex based fighter is better? I'm not sure if his outfit is "full plate mail" (although with Armor Training 2 at level 7, you can walk around in full plate mail like it's nothing).

I played "Captain Andoran" a few times and it worked great. I had him as a Paladin with 18 STR, and 14 DEX, CON, & CHA. Stuck mostly to two-handed shield bashing and smiting everything in sight. I came up with it pretty quickly so I missed a lot of obvious feats like the folks above have listed. I will say that Paladin fit thematically and the saving throw benefits fit with Cap's general righteousness and goodness.
A note on armor- it may not look it but Cap has always worn some kind of armor, either chain or scale mail, in the modern comics. Armor definately still works.

The Adventurer's Armory has a combat feat called "Equipment Trick" When you have certain prerequisite feats you can use your shield for certain effects.
For example with Improved Trip and Throw anything you can use the break ground trick. This pretty much is tossing your shield at a foes feet to trip him.
With Hurl Anything, you can toss your shield, even if it isn't a throwing shield.
With Deadly aim and Throw Anything you can ricochet the shield.
It's a cool feat for a guy trying to play as the Captain.
There are also tricks that allow you to use your shield reflection so you can avoid gaze attacks much like Clash of the Titans, or to use your shield to gag a foe to keep it from biting or using mouth based abilities.

I made a "Captain Andoran" once as a thought experiment and it worked out quite well. I made him a straight fighter with the Advanced Simple Template as one of his levels to reflect the super soldier formula. He had a slew of shield feats and wielded a magical adamantine shield with throwing, returning, and ricochet.
