Shard's influence on the person who carries it

Shattered Star

My players have just met Natalya in her shack and, after a tumultuous start and the killing of three goblins, they are now discussing with her. One of my player has proposed her to attack and try to get rid of the Tower Girls in exchange for the Shard of Pride.

I wonder to what extent Natalya could accept this offer. Does the shard exercise a control on the person who carries it, preventing him to willingly give or sell it to someone even if it's in his own best interests ?

In other words, if a person who carries a shard is offered, said, one million gp to give it up, would he be able to do it ?

I think Natalya would be happy to have the players clean out the crow for her. But, I don't think she'd relinquesh the shard afterward. The player's action would just reinforce her position of power. After all, they obeyed her.

It doesn't specifically states she couldn't give up the shard, though.

We always played it that the shards don't necessarily exercise control over the individual, but rather the effects of the curse reinforce certain negative emotions, but the effects on the cursed individual would be like a heroin addiction. They form a real emotional attachment to the shard, just being near it, and as a result they suffer symptoms of withdrawal if taken away from it.
