Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

i am just starting this game and i am getting confused on what i need and stuff,I have the core rule book in PDF format and dice(which is containing all 7 dice) i want to start a group or become a part of one because i really do not have the money to but the other stuff, and i really don't know what to but also. so please can you help me, and i also have never played yet.

Well it depends.

You have acces to this site: http://www.d20pfsrd.com/

And if you have a few dices (or a dice app on a smartphone) then you are good to go.

You don't NEED more, but if you like more options, then more books are fine. And by bying you support paizo, and they might make more great stuff then...

But more dices - well that speed things up.
more d20, d6 - they tend to be some of the the most used.

I am sure there are others that can give better advice on these message boards- but here goes...

There are many posts on the message boards already that give some advice, here is one of them about Pathfinder Society (PFS)
http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2nfuu?New-to-PFS-need-help-and-advice#1
Go to Advice for PFS.

It refers to the open playing groups that play pathfinder, it would be a good way to learn the game. They are helpful- especially if you let them know you are new and need to learn the game or set-up a character. It may be good to use one of the pre-generated character when first learning. Those can be found a link here that talks about organized play:
http://paizo.com/pathfinderSociety/about
Go to About PFS.

You can check for games in your area here:
http://paizo.com/pathfinderSociety/events
Go to locations for PFS.

(Sorry - do not know how to hotlink these links not sure the links will work)

Best-
Allar

Hey, I was where you are at about 3 months ago. If you're looking to join a game as a player, you basically have two options: (1) Pathfinder Society open play events or (2) take turns with friends GM'ing a game.

To learn the mechanics of creating a character, I strongly recommending HERO LAB. There is a free version that is based on the Beginner Box rules, which was good for me in learning the basics (how attribute modifiers worked, how skill levels and modifiers played into each other. How weapons and armor changed stats on a character sheet). Once you have a feel for those, the rest starts to come easy.

I agree with Bigtuna, you'll need more dice. However, it's not an immediate need. You can get by with just one set, but if it's the only set in a group it will slow things down a bit.

Another quick piece of advice: 1d20 -2 is NOT the same as 3d6. So don't substitute for convenience. It's a statistical thing. Certain results are more likely with 3d6 whereas all results are equally probable with 1d20.

Other than that, play. Even if you only have 1 person to play with. The act of actually doing something (even if you don't have a clue as to what you're doing) is way more useful than readying and studying.

Enjoy and welcome to the hobby!

You'll need some kind of miniature. Doesn't need to be awesome, you can be the shoe from monopoly. But, you need:

To look different from the other shoes
To not be a die (tons of those around already)

You need a gaming group. If you have a local college or University, chances are there is a Gaming group. If that doesn't work, try posting at your local library and see if there are people interested in gaming nearby.

Finally, look for a book store, comic book store and talk to people. Maybe there is already a group in town and you can get with them.
