Huh.

I thought it was pretty clever that Mr. Nelson intended it to be either better at offense (not wearing armor) or defense (wearing armor), but that works too. Thanks!

Frankly it reminded me of the 3e bard that way.

But the abilities for the class seemed skewed either too good or too weak.

It still leaves unanswered what bonus feats the sohei can take.

That is too awesome.

Wow Pathfinder Design Team thanks for the great ruling!

interesting that the design team takes different views on the archetypes than the author, it really must be like letting someone adopt your baby. heh.

great. now will we see a lot of sohei / gunslingers?

Hmmmm.... Flurry of ki-enhanced bullets, eh? People will scream "ZOMG CHEEZ". Or they won't because monks are wire-fu superhumans. Grab a gunman's duster and you're basically Neo.

Or they won't because Gun Training is not the same as Weapon Training. You could do a fighter (weapon master) 3/sohei 6 for this but any build that takes 9 levels to start doing what it's supposed to do is hardly "ZOMG CHEEZ". Plus this would still be less optimal than a Gunslinger 9.

Or trench fighter 5/sohei instead to get DEX to damage. Maybe 1 level dip to musket master for quick reloading.

For "getting online", Musket Master 1/trench fighter 3-5 is on par with straight MM of similar level; getting the Sohei on top of it is just bonus.

You still need six levels of Sohei to flurry with the weapon training. That's 11 levels (trench fighter 5/Sohei 6), over half your PC's career, not being able to do what you originally planned (flurry with guns). By that time a full gunslinger would have signature deed. If by some miracle the Sohei build was more powerful who cares lol? Around that point the game loses its balance anyways and the player should get some reward for slogging through 11 levels of mediocrity.

I'm just saying the theory that because Soheis can flurry in light armor somehow means people will flock to the archetype is wrong. It was a great ruling that made the Sohei viable, not a way for cheese or overpowered builds. The fact you need six levels in Sohei to flurry, plus levels in something else with weapon training if you want a wider array of weapon options, is a rather large deterrent for munchkins.

Nope, they will anyway because "wah nobody can reload that fast".

just find a way to use Ki Arrow without spending any ki, and you can be a zen archer without a bow.

Monk, Sohei: Can a sohei use flurry of blows while wearing light armor?

Yes (but not medium or heavy armor). However, a sohei does not gain his monk AC bonus class feature when wearing armor.

The next printing of Ultimate Combat will be changed to reflect this ruling.

Thank you Pathfinder Design Team!

At the risk of being pedantic, what about Fast Movement?

Quote:

When wearing armor, using a shield, or carrying a

medium or heavy load, a monk loses his AC bonus, as well as his fast movement and flurry of blows abilities.

We know the what happens with Flurry and AC Bonus, but not Fast Movement.

I don't believe that archetype has Fast Movement, making it a non-issue.

Sorry for asking a silly question.

I actually had the same question (having never looked at it before), so I had to go and look it up. :)

I've never thought the Sohei could flurry in armor, but I clicked the FAQ anyways. If they could, I bet you the supply of +1 Mithral Brawling Chain Shirts across Golarion would sell out overnight.

Now that brawlers can flurry in mithral chain mail, finding +1 Mithral Brawling Chain of either sort is quite difficult. :-)
