When I first heard about the dodo familiar. I assumed it was one of their April Fool things. A great big bird that let's someone walk up and club it to death? That thing gives a +4 to initiative?
I mean, a humming bird or woodpecker, I can see. But a dodo?
I like to see humor built right into the product like that.

If you happen to want to play a winter witch, the Arctic Hare familiar in the Reign of Winter player guide is a +4 initiative familiar, and PFS honors that list. Wanna have your jester pull a rabbit out of his (familiar pocketed) hat?
It also gets you cold resist, and some other bonuses, at the cost of your 4th level hex.
Seriously, pick up a cracked orange Ioun stone (1k gold, add any cantrip to spells known)for acid splash, disrupt undead, or ray of frost if you aren't a winter witch just to have a ranged touch attack that you can spam at low levels.
There's also a trait that gives you a single cantrip from any list.
Unseen servant is not a bad spell... 1 hr/level and it can stand next to you and reload a crossbow each round for you, so you don't have to. Or carry the stuff you weren't paying attention to that brought you over your 23 lbs weight limit when you dumped your strength.

I'm not keen on the Winter Witch archetype...any archetype really...with this character because I'm trying to avoid making a specialist.
I do like the Winter Hare suggestion though. I was also thinking of it being a good fit with my failed magician-type character.

Well, technically, by historical accounts, they didn’t club it. They shot it, point blank, with a big LOUD gun. When the gun blast went off, the dodo didn’t scatter away like most birds. The only reason it didn't die out naturally was because it was so big there wasn't a natural predator on the island large enough to hunt it. I’m sure the dodo chicks were prey, but, what predator is going to get past the big mama dodo to get at the young?

A believe, IIRC, there is an extinct, penguin like, bird that existed. It was called the Great Awk. THEY were clubbed to death.
