I ran it successfully on Win7 if that is helpful.

What other roles are there besides elementalist?

I forget the name of the Melee role.

Skirmisher is - I believe - a Scout type.

Elementalist is the Wizard type. You must choose two of Fire (damage), Air (knockback), and Water (snare).

Primalist is the Healer type.

That's off the top of my head.

I installed on Windows 7 and it runs fine.

Unfortunately, it's a massive hog. Don't expect to be able to use a web browswer fluidly while it's running.

I planned to play an archer/hunter/gather type, does that role fit better with a particular race for starting area advantages?

Hobs, for that you want to takr the Skirmisher role and make Deadeye primary.

- everyone can gather materials.
- everyone can craft. to improve Craftingskills you need to craft related items.
so to be a good bow-maker you need to make lots of bows.

-this information should be up to date.

Edited:
i feel a bit reminded of wurm.
for example
-you harvest from a bush(harvesting:herb-gathering)-you may get cotton-from cotton you can make cloth(craft:tailoring)-from cloth you can craft bags/sacks.

Hm: I was mistaken about the Elvish race: when I was checking things out on the web the Mirdain didn't open: I looked at the small goblinesque race with 'Elf' firmly in mind and got them confused.

I may see if I can reroll as an elf as well, once I get off work: will advise. Not sure whether I easily can do it, as apparently there is a limit of a single character per server.

How massive is massive? I also have limited space on my bootcamp, if it takes more than 30-35gb I'm gonna have to skip. Otherwise Ill make it by the weekend.

Not on my PC atm, but According to steam it´s 8GB,

It's not so much a space hog, as it is a processor hog.

By default, it runs Full Screen, which won't allow the cursor to leave the monitor. I unchecked this, and the result was what is usually called Full Screen Windowed, which is usually my preferred mode. However, I noticed a very severe lag when navigating web sites in Chrome while Darkfall was running.

It says 12g on the site, but I saw a youtube video with a guy that said 70! Nihimon and other reviews Ive seen mention it as a space hog. Space hog usually means 30-45g like SWTOR.

Goblin Squad Member

My download was under 8 gigs.

If thats the case I should be fine. When I go over to bootcamp I only game. I'll be playing Ork or Mahirim.

The 70 was probably from Beta, pre-optimization.

I see it in euros which would be $53/$20 mo. Is this correct or is there a different place to download the US client?

I was on the fence as it is , I'd hate for that to be the backbreaker.

Goblin Squad Member

@avari3, I got it by clicking the Buy Now link at darkfallonline.com.

To add a little more detail...

There are currently two cycling Lead Stories at the top of the page. One has a Buy Now link, the other has a Watch Trailer link. I clicked that Buy Now link.

Yup, so we are talking euros.

Goblin Squad Member

My price was $39.99 USD, with a recurring $14.95 USD every 30 days.

Could it be that it thinks Puerto Rico is in Europe?

Goblin Squad Member

I saw dollars when I bought it. My guess is you're in Europe or Britain, right?

Firstly, some brits might be offended by that because they do belong to europe.

secondly, the above is not true when it comes to currencies, Uk still has prices in pound Sterling unlike the rest of euro(pe).

First time I ever hear my homeland being place on another continent. :)

I am going to buy the game after 8/31/13 threw Steam, for the regular price of:

Buy Darkfall Unholy Wars
$39.95 USD at checkout, auto-renewed every 30 day(s) at $14.95 USD.

OK, made it to Maghnir after a long solo run. Got lucky with a couple of chaos chests on the way.

I guess I now need to wait for the Goblin Squad to be formed. For what it's worth, I also nominate Hardin as our illustrious leader...

Hey all!

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I currently have 31 gold! But forming a clan costs 2,000, so I'll go kill some zombies and see if they drop a few golden eggs.

We should just call the clan "Goblin Squad" so there is no confusion what we are about (to ourselves, at least). In the meantime (while I am stealing gold coins from undead), please brainstorm on two things:

1) a clan motto (max 100 characters)

and

2) a clan charter (max 200 characters).

I have no pretense of being the be-all-end-all for the clan, but I'll be happy to create it (once enough zombies contribute their fair share) and set up some sort of structure (Intelligence Corps, Supply Corps, Diplomatic Corps, etc...).

I have about 300G so far, those chaos chests are useful. Now if I can just work out how to add friends in game I should be able to find you and hand it over - or is there a working mail system?

Oh, and first thing PfO should learn from DF? How not to design a UI!

Goblin Squad Member

I was thinking "G0blin Squ4d" to get a little more l33t flair in...

Goblin Squad Member

We need a topic to talk tips and strategy. While I like the idea of doing that here for higher exposure PFO Fan may be the place to do it because it would allow me to edit any important tips into my OP. Thoughts?

For now there is one thing I find very important. With so many life primalists I need you to test your main ability extensively. The one where you link with someone and your mana becomes extra health to them.

-Are there any costs associated with casting / maintaining it?
-Over what distance can it be maintained?
-Can multiple people maintain it on the same target?
-If yes, does it split damage between your mana pools or drain you one at a time?

I'm having visions of super soldiers linked to multiple life primalists all using coversions and mana potions to keep their mana up, but it seems unlikely the game will allow that.

Goblin Squad Member

Logging in my Warrior as I type. Ye gods what a train wreck of a UI this game has ; gonna be some time rebinding .

Pino Bloodaxe, Tovarr Slayer

Goblin Squad Member

The UI is... obscure. Perhaps 'esoteric' gives complete and utter ignorance a panache of class?

Be careful not to push the "return to default" button after you're done, or you'll be headed down the road I took. The buttons are all quite small, and if you're playing near a window putting some glare in your eyes...

I've not even learned where to get my Law and Life abilities yet. I've got the basic skills, and right now I'm running around Maghnir, having been told to find a monster-spawn point.

I can see several on the map, but can get to only one, and there's nothing there. I have much to learn.

I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong...have something not set properly...

Every move I make seems lagged. I doubt it's my system, since I play Rift and LOTRO without any problems.

Suggestions?

Goblin Squad Member

I'll be home / on TS in roughly 2 and a half hours. So about 6:30 Alaska time / 5:30 Pacific. For those of you who are new to Darkfall and have questions.

It's likely your graphical / GUI settings. The game is very choppy until you tone them down. After that it's actually very smooth. I can run you through that on my break, or if you want to do it yourself focus on shadows and the amount of messages your game saves / how long it saves them for. Those both really slow you down.

Goblin Squad Member

Started a thread to record who's playing what classes.

Goblin Squad Member

Just a side comment. For those coming in saying "Those Mahirim look weird / unnapealing" you are looking at the shattered wreckage of one of the coolest MMO races ever.

Mourn for what was lost!

Goblin Squad Member

Wow--incredibly high learning curve (for me) in the interface. I can't even bind, can't figure out how to /tell or /reply. Phew :)

Goblin Squad Member

Yeah, I had a very rough time as well. I expect it's probably more intuitive for people coming from an FPS background...

Goblin Squad Member

I'm currently on Teamspeak Mbando, and can answer any questions you have if you log on. Do you need me to PM you the server address and password?

Goblin Squad Member

Pino and Mbando are both in Meghnir as well. Tricky getting some of the social functions to work properly. The system is robust I am sure, but it is counter intuitive compared to many other systems I have used. No "right click" here...the UI is a toggle (action or GUI).

The chat system also seems like it must be good, but I was trying to have a private chat with Mbando but it was going out on global. Excellent was to share secret plans with the world. Nihimon is right about the global chat, though, toxic stuff. IT is closable, but a source of intel, if nothing more. The local (called area chat in DF) seems to be of limited value, mostly noobs like me asking if there are any goblins on, but I found Pino that way.

Beautiful though. A word of caution…if you spend too much unattended time anywhere except in town “farming mats” some monster will notice you...a bear found me and I had to outrun him. Just don’t have enough power to kill a bear yet. So the power gains are very incremental.

The spell system seems interesting. New spells seem to cost a fortune in Prowess, but like most games the shock of the high prices will wear off as we all gain wealth and power, and in a few months it will seem a pittance.

Yes. In the old version every race / gender had different hitboxes and weapon reach lengths. They also all had different armor models because of it.

In the new version they made everything the same because... they're lazy.

Anyway, forewarning, there is about 3 hours of patching after the game downloads. Guess I'll get to set-up characters and try to get in contact with old allies TOMORROW. :P

Wow. I bought the Steam version, and after it finished downloading, which I ran while I slept, the first-launch patch took only three minutes.

Consider yourself fortunate: I have somehow lost the tutorial thread trying to evade the attacks of a dragon when I took a portal out of the tutorial area. I'm in an almost empty home city without any directions to do anything at all. I read somewhere I was supposed to get a mount, but it looks like I missed out on such niceties. But I did figure out how to add prowess points to my skills... yet my primary spells are still grey.

I am wondering whether I should start over yet again. I have figured out how to harvest herbs stone and wood and am slowly gaining prowess. Also found some zombies to blast and gain some minor loot.

Any tips or advice would be welcome.
