Calculating WBL for mythic characters.

Scarab Sages

How should average WBL be calculated for mythic pc's?

Count just their actual levels or effective level including mythic tiers?

Without a baseline understanding of WBL, generating characters for comparison purposes becomes more difficult.

Mythic tiers do not effect level or things like WBL.

1. Adjustments to average WBL for PC's is not directly addressed by the new supplement, which is why I posted under general discussion.

2. I would really appreciate your reasoning behind your argument. A simple NO, without reasons, explains nothing.

I would offer the following counter-arguments to your statement:

1. Characters are treated as +1 level / 2 mythic tiers.

2. Mythic characters will be fighting higher CR opponents than non-mythic characters of the same level. Higher CR opponents drop more valuable loot. Any mythic character advancing through normal play is going to have significantly more wealth than the non-mythic WBL tables would suggest.

3. NPC's are addressed by the non-mythic WBL table. CR is advanced, increasing WBL. This reinforces #2, mythic characters will access increased wealth through normal play.

For all these reasons, I believe mythic characters should be treated as their effective level for comparison purposes. Usage of unmodified character level for WBL purposes creates a distorted view that will not reflect actual play experience.

I said no because the book says mythic tiers do not increase level or anything based on level.

WBL is for high level character creation and can be used as a guideline for the GM when handing out loot.

WBL is a meta-game concept, not an in-game ability based on character level.

Usage of Core WBL tables as a guideline for handing out loot, without adjusting for mythic tiers, creates a conflict in the WBL rules.

  • NPC WBL is determined by CR, which is adjusted by mythic tier.
  • Suggested WBL of PC's is a resulted derived from loot acquired by defeating NPC's.

Unless the intention is to accelerate advancement, fighting fewer encounters of a higher CR per level, this would create a substantial disparity between wealth found and expected wealth.

That's one way to look at it.

Also there is nothing stopping you from using the NPC table when making a high level mythic character.

Although in my opinion you should never be making high level mythic PCs at any time after the start of the campaign. So the situation where you bring in a new mythic character with less gear than the rest of his mythic party should never really happen.

There should never be a pile of mythic dead bards to hide behind.

This was discussed on the Mythic Adventures product page I believe. I think it was even answered by Jacobs. The argument is that mythic tiers alone increase CR by 1/2 of tiers. If you were given more loot than normal for your character level, your CR would effectively be even higher.

I believe that Mythic tiers are their own reward. You may be a higher CR with mythic tiers but your level is the same. I agree that to add more loot as well would just make the characters even more powerful.

In the actual book, it calls out that WBL isn't changed with Mythic Tiers. I'd hazard to say that mythic characters are less reliant on more magic items, given their natural powerful abilities make them so. Of course, if you want them to take on drastically higher threats (CR 26+), you'll have to increase their WBL beyond that of a level 20th person to take them on. That one is a bit more "play by ear", since it all depends on what big bad boss you are fighting. If it's a demon lord, expect much of that extra wealth spent of demon bane weapons and anarchic weapons, as well as magic items to make you not die.
