Help! My eidolon lost his face!

Advice

Hey, guys. I need help. In the campaign I'm in we decided the 2nd edition crit rules and tables. What this means is that crits deal max damage plus an added effect. Creatures smaller than you don't do anything too bad, but creatures larger than you can absolutely wreck you if they roll well.

That's exactly what happened to my poor eidolon. A troll crit him and the effect was "snout destroyed (no bite anymore) 1/3 movement and penalty to attack." And these effects are permanent until fixed magically.

My question is this: is there any way I could fix my eidolon prior to finding a cleric or Druid high enough level to cast regeneration? Eidolons don't heal unless healed. I thought maybe when I leveled I could redistribute my EPs and fix it that way, But the bite is a free evolution by the base quadruped form. I'm not sure what to do.

I was hoping someone with more knowledge or a similar experience could shed some light on how to fix my precious pet. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Well, first of all that crit rule sounds like garbage IMHO.

Second, many people won't be able to help because that's a 2e rule.

Now, with that said, any reasonable DM would allow your eidolon to be fixed when you allocate evolution points. The eidolon is getting re-sculpted, why not be able to fix the snout?

Don’t play with silly rules like that. And, those aren't part of the AD&D rules, either.

Esp Crits and fumbles that last beyond the combat. They unfairly penalize PCs over foes and Fighters over spellcasters.

I'd rule that when your eidolon comes back after death it is good as new.

Um, I don't actually think you have a problem. To the best of my understanding of the rules, your eidolon could have been disintegrated, losing every body part, and you'd get him back completely whole the next day.

Quote:
A summoner can summon his eidolon in a ritual that takes 1 minute to perform. When summoned in this way, the eidolon hit points are unchanged from the last time it was dismissed or banished. The only exception to this is if the eidolon was slain, in which case it returns with half its normal hit points. The eidolon does not heal naturally. The eidolon remains until dismissed by the summoner (a standard action). If the eidolon is sent back to its home plane due to death, it cannot be summoned again until the following day.

So don't heal the eidolon and let it die, and then summon it back the next day with half normal hit points--and with a face.

Some groups like using critical and/or fumble rules and it does add some drama to the game.

However, as the saying goes 'It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye' .... or in this case, snout. Now it isn't so fun.

Some good advice has been given. Now it is just what your DM will allow for.

Since you can reassign Evolution points after a level up, you should lso be able to rebuild it's head. Aka remove head evolution add again. You could also use the Transmogrify spell.

"Terrible!"

The problem with brutally permanent effects like this is they punish players, but not enemies. Most enemies exist only long enough to get stabbed to death by the players. If the players inflict permanent injury on an orc, that might come into play later (orc lives to seek revenge, etc), but unless the GM puts lots of effort into tracking every maimed enemy that limps away from your battles, it might not matter for them at all.

However if the player is permanently injured, he has to cope long after the next truckload of enemies has come and gone. And then the next, and the next, until he can be healed. The same goes for curses, negative levels, and other nasty long-term effects. Players don't get quite as much utility out of inflicting lasting effects against foes as foes get against players. The ghost or apprentice necromancer is often only alive long enough to die by player hands, so it doesn't mind negative levels and ability damage quite as much as the player does.

But I suppose I can see the appeal of such a brutal rule, so long as the players are into it.

That said, stab your eidelon. Keep stabbing until he's dead. Then bring him back, good as new (6th Day Re-Pet!). He'll thank you later.

Just don't sleep with your jugular vein exposed, just FYI. He might try to "help" you with that ugly face of yours the way you helped him. >:D

I don't wanna live on this planet anymore.

Well, I felt The Bad Joke would be looming over this whole conversation unless it was gotten out of the way early on.

Yep, I'm pretty sure that ghost doesn't mind negative levels at all... :)

A fair catch ;) But all the same, that ghost doesn't mind permanent penalties of any kind since he's not meant to exist as long as the player does... and even if he lives forever, he doesn't care. He's an NPC. The GM will simply make more, unless he's committed to incorporating that old NPC into the story.

Thanks for the suggestions. It made sense to me that when I redistributed the EPs it would take care of his face. I'm sure my DM will agree to that.

As for the crit rules, sure they're harsh, but the added drama has been tons of fun. Sure it stinks one of the main features of my class is essentially worthless, but its been fun to improvise and think more strategically. Used more summoned monsters last night than in my whole experience with D&D or PF.

That's good to hear!
