Can clothing be enchanted with the 'Brawling' ability?

Rules Questions

Under its entry, it specifies that Brawling can only be applied to 'light armor', and I'm not sure if clothing classifies as light armor. I know that it can recieve enhancements but the rules can be tricky with Brawling - for instance, Bracers of Armor can be enchanted with armor enhancements and provide an armor bonus and actually fit on your arms with which you might do most of your brawling, but can't RAW be enchanted with the Brawling enhancement...

Good question, hope somebody weighs in on this one. I would say yes in my games for Bracers of Armor, but no to just clothing.

Clothing is not listed under the Light Armor category on the armor tables, nor is it described as light armor. So no, brawling cannot be put on clothing.

You could enchant a haramaki with brawling however, as it is light armor. As a bonus, you get +1 ac from it.

Brawling can't be put on bracers of armor, as they aren't light armor, and they can't be put on clothes either, as those aren't armor.

You can see this due to the text necessary in this spell to allow it to work on clothes. If it was the general case that clothes counted as armor, then that wouldn't be necessary.

So can clothes be enchanted with a standard generic armor enhancement bonus? I was under the impression that they could, that it provided a base +0 AC bonus with no movement, armor check or spell check penalties.

I appreciate the link to the spell above, but that alone doesn't fully put the issue to bed for me - I've seen far too many examples of redundant wording in spells and other abilities in the past. Now, if there was an entry that said something like 'Normal: clothing could not be enchanted with armor bonuses.', that would be a bit more definitive.

No, clothes can't be enhanced with an armor enhancement.

They are always distinctly listed separately from armor. They are not armor. Its the same as asking 'can I enchanting "adventuring gear" with an armor enhancement?' They are different categories of items, and not valid for it.

That's kind of lame. They make something perfect for a monk, but he can't use it because he can't wear light armor without losing his major abilities.

It was never meant to be for the monk, hence the restriction.

If your clothing has brawling ability, it's high time to send it to the Laundry Golem.

Yes, but think about this: many of the abilities of the monk class require that you do not wear armor for them to work. If this assumption was true, monks would have to be in the nude in order to use their abilities. *note to self: nudist monks.*

More specifically, I think that the number of items that take up the body slot rather than the armor slot (such as monk's robes) indicate the difference between them. Clothes are just what you typically wear under, or over, your armor. *note to self: pain taster that wears chain mail and no shirt. Ouch*

.... Obese nudist monks?

I see the very specific restriction meant to keep monks from using the item. I don't much understand why they can't make an item like that for the monk. Or maybe there is some item of that kind I'm missing.

Because PF hates the monk.

People still seem surprised by this, I' m not sure why.
