What happened to Aroden's followers?

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Not the living followers; those poor chumps probably converted to other deity worship after enough time.

I mean the dead followers. I assume that Aroden had a spiritual realm that housed those who worshipped him when they lived. Once he died, what happened to that place, if it ever existed, and what happened to all of his worshipers, all those souls?

Did they get passed out to other deities like poker chips, or are they just gone, like Aroden himself?

I would think poker chips... Souls are not treated very well in Golarion's outer planes.

Aroden's former domain on the Outer Planes is a section of the city of Axis, and it's currently being "fought" over by a whole pile of different individuals and faiths. The Great Beyond has more on all that.

As for the souls residing there, well I'm assuming a few things. One, most souls seem to "merge" with the plane after a while, so I don't think there was millions of long-dead Arodenites sitting around. Two: there was enough similarities between Aroden and his herald Iomedae that a solid percentage of the remaining souls could migrate to her realm in Heaven without much difficulty.

I don't have my copy of The Great Beyond at hand, but there might even be a bit of information on all this. I dimly recall there being a part about the Axiomite Godmind making some decision on that. I dunno.

I would assume that they would mostly likely go to Abadar. He's so close to Aroden.

My understanding is that they don't so much merge with the plane as much as over time advance up the ranks of the various Outsiders of the plane. For example, LG individuals become denizens of their realm, sort of a form of mostly powerless ghosts that don't really remember their past existence but receive their rewards in the afterlife. After a few years/centuries/longer they might advance to becoming a Lantern Archon, once more taking on the call to crusade for LG in the realms. Those that survive go on to become higher ranking archons, and as they die, are "reborn" as the heavenly hosts. Similar with Evil souls, becoming Dretches, and then eventually the most cunning and cruel becoming stronger Demons and Devils.

Paizo has kind of changed up their view of the afterlife a few times as it seemed to have offended some RL people, which leaves it a little unclear.
