Player,
it is a little hard to give much help without more information.
Is your "mistake" one made as a player, or something done in character?
You make it sound like you would start a new character, but this wouldn't change anything on the good vs. evil standpoint for a character that has done wrong.
If you have done something wrong as a player (i.e., caused some offense for an action personally done), I would say that you would need to make amends to the person or persons you have done harm to. Not knowing the offense, it is really hard to say more.
Basically, if you did something in character, that character would have to make amends, correct alignment issues, etc. Note that become a cleric would not necessarily help, since there are are Evil gods, as well as Chaotic ones (and these are all available to PCs of the correct alignment).
Basically, the best thing you can do (in character or out) would be to start with an apology, and change your behavior.
Hope that helps...
The Elusive Trout |
If you're talking in game, however, it can go a long way just to think about yourself as the character. Start small if you have to;
Give money to orphanages and temples.
Do chores for your fellow adventurers (cooking, cleaning, sewing) below the radar.
Forage food for that one lame guy begging near the tavern.
Teach the neighborhood militia a few tricks.
Giving oneself over to a good deity as a cleric or not is always a plus, too.

Agreed, Trout.
A few other things you could do, in character.
- Buy a wand of CLW and use it on others... PCs in your party, or wounded NPCs.
- Start carrying gear that would be useful for other PCs... in case they hadn't thought of things, such as a cold iron longsword, or perhaps a silvered light mace.
- be the first volunteer to take watches.
- Make sure you have a source of light, regardless of whether you need one or not.
- Stop doing evil acts. (can't stress this one enough!)
- If you are not already a Cleric, Oracle, or Inquisitor, change your alighnment to a Good alignment, and play it that way
- Get your character a token to show his repentance... something like a hair shirt would show that you are trying atone. Even better a phylactery of good faith!

I'm planning on a similar character - moving my ended Skulls and Shackles character to PFS after his reincarnation. He's going to be reinforcing his devotion with Saranrae and joining the Silver Crusade to amend for his actions as a pirate, which may have included sicking a dragon onto an indigenous tribe for profit from the Aspis Consortium... so joining the Pathfinder Society becomes both a 'stick it to the Aspis' and an attempt to redeem himself for hundreds of dead natives.
