Nobody's going to argue that the whole team doesn't deserve a movie break after the GenCon rush, but don't you think it would look a bit better for the company if you did it after finishing shipping out this month's subscriber orders? It kinda ticks me off, personally. A minor thing, I admit, but still... the timing on it doesn't seem like the best fan relations idea.

Really? I don't begrudge you your right to be ticked off but ...
Man, as hard as the Paizo staff works, I don't have any problem with this at all. Besides, it sounds like they are going over lunch and will only will be gone the time it takes to see the movie and get back - I don't think a few hours is going to make much difference in the over all time it takes to get orders out.
Let them have a small bit of fun over an extended lunch - they certainly deserve it!
Heck, my first thought when I read that was ... "wow, yet another reason why Paizo is the most awesome place to work!" ... followed quickly by "Why oh why don't I work there?!?!" ;)

I'm with Marc and Bill. It's incredibly awesome to me that they get an opportunity to do this, and I certainly don't think it's out of line given the insane amount of work they accomplished during the Gen Con rush.
I admire Lisa a lot for doing little things like this to show that the company cares about its employees. Take it from someone who used to work for a company that treats its employees like dirt: Employee morale is a huge, huge thing.

Just a simple "sorry if you're still waiting on this month's shipments - Tuesday afternoon was the only time we could fit in everybody's schedules" world have been entirely sufficient.
And I've had clients chew me out for far less of a delay. Oil companies do not like delays. Of any kind.

hey paizo people
I hope you enjoy the movie, that is pretty rad
also I made Ross Byers a hair doll that sort of looks like Chris Pine, if Chris Pine were made out of hair
it was going to be for James Jacobs but he started bringing up a Swashbuckler class so we are no longer on speaking terms
also do not worry, I will try to refrain from posting anything terrible until after 3:30

Kvantum, while I can appreciate your ire and that you value punctuality... I'm not sure comparing Paizo to 'Big Oil' is fair.
Paizo is in a luxury industry, producing codified tools for helping others produce collaborative fantasy fiction with an underlying game system. If they miss a shipment by a few hours (or a business day, thus), the net effect on the world is a 1 to 3 day delay (depending on if the delay bordered a weekend) in letting people produce happy fantasy fun time tabletop gaming with some new game material a team of developers came up with.
If big oil misses a shipment, a gas station could go without fuel. An airplane could be forced to stay on the ground. Groceries might not get delivered to a store. I'm sure their production/distribution network has some fault tolerance built in, but it still represents a real impact on the world if too many delays happen. Small wonder that huge oil corporations are very demanding upon you to be prompt and accurate.
The folks at Paizo can go watch their Star Trucks or whatever it's called; the world will still be here and be intact 2-3 hours later, or even a business day later, despite their absence. I went to see that same film recently and it was fairly good; I hope they enjoy it as much as I did.

Well, if you assume the warehouse staff all sod off with the developer crew - which they don't - and you assume that everyone should be as sociopathic as the people who run oil companies, then sure, that'd probably be a little dickish.
Then again, considering that the warehouse crew has been putting in extra time, the dev team doesn't ship things, Paizo is run by gamers with a customer base of other gamers, and that the entire dev crew just put in a hell of a crunch period to finish up Gencon prep on top of the work they've been doing for Paizocon and the work they've been doing to keep all the product lines on schedule... A single day of company-sponsored kicking back is probably under-rewarding them.
But hey - +10 Internet Points for the entitled kvetching. Good job.

When you've spent the last month dealing with a client that calls you daily for updates on a project, and threatens to cut all ties with you unless they see real and meaningful progress, without ever defining just what they consider "real and meaningful", four hours starts to seem a lot more important than some might think it is.
Pass my thanks along to the warehouse crew. I know the feeling of late, late nights.

So, how about the BIG question ... How was the movie???
Star Trucks was pretty good. My favorite scene was the part where Captain Skywalker stepped onto the bridge of the Millennium Firefly and set his phasers to lightsaber. His first mate, Zoe Sulu, said they aim to stun. That scene definitely made the movie!
Nah, I'm just messing with you. More seriously, it's a goodt sci-fi film mixing action with morality debate. A lot of the 'exploration' aspect one might normally attribute to Star Trek is diminished, but not absent. Instead it combines Star Trek's usual flair for delving into a social issue (under a cover of this happening in a futuristic society) with lots of exciting (and sometimes creative) fights and chases.
It's perhaps not as cerebral as some previous Star Trek fare, but it's a valid addition to the franchise and I enjoyed it.

Reading this, one might almost believe that the Post Office has a continuous stream of carriers wandering into and out of the Paizi offices in a long, constant line. You know. As opposed to how the mail works for everyone else in the world, with the guy showing up once, maybe twice a day.
Seriously, dude. Look out a window. Get a job in a mail room. Being gone for two or three hours isn't going to stop the mail from going out any more than being there every second of the 24 hour day guarantees that every package in the building is going to have a mailman standing by at a moment's notice.

As someone who's been checking hourly for the last day and a half to see if his Ultimate Campaign PDF is available, while I can appreciate the anticipation of new products, I have to disagree.
I think it's tremendous that Paizo does things like this. The people at this company, but all indications, work their collective butts off and I think it's great that the company rewards that work with things like this.
GenCon is just one event. The Paizo work ethic goes year-round.
I hope you all enjoyed the movie.

@Marc Radle and BPorter great posts.
Sometimes you just have to take a break and unwind so you can start back fresh and ready.
+1 and it’s great that Paizo understand this. Also, when you do take a break, you will be able to do a better job.
Let me for clarity emphasise that I think they all deserve the break regardless if it make them work harder or not. As Marc pointed out: “wow, yet another reason why Paizo is the most awesome place to work!" ... followed quickly by "Why oh why don't I work there?!?!"”I once had a boss that always said: It is when we are most busy that we need take a break. I’m happy Paizo also get this, sad the OP doesn’t.
Edit:
@The Paizo staff and the warehouse people. Noticed what your fans/customers think.

Look out. I hear that everyone at Paizo plans to take all day off on Monday!
And I'm almost 100% sure I got my January subscription a few days late because for some reason they thought it would be okay to take multiple days off in late December.
They didn't work 7 Days a week in december?

The fact that Paizo was generous enough to take us to the movie is laudable all on its own, but that they did so during the workday is even more amazing, as it meant we didn't have to sacrifice any personal time with our families to enjoy the benefits of said generosity. Thanks again, Paizo management team!
