PaizoCon painting contest

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'd like to determine how much interest there would be in a miniatures painting contest at PaizoCon.

* You wouldn't have to paint it on-site, you could bring a finished mini from home.

* I'd want a category for kids (age 12 and under) so they don't have to compete with painters who have years of experience.

* I'm in the process of wrangling several miniatures companies as sponsors if there is enough interest in a painting contest at the show.

* We'd probably have several other categories, perhaps tied to the sponsors. So if Reaper is a sponsor, "Best painted Reaper miniature" would be a category. And, because it's Paizo, "best goblin miniature" would probably be a category.

Would you be interested in participating in such a contest?
Any other suggestions or concerns about such a contest?

(All entrants get to KEEP their submitted minis, of course!)

This would be my first time organizing such a thing and I don't want to get in over my head, but I also don't want to organize it if only 5 people would want to enter minis for the contest.

This might motivate me to paint something between then and now...

Some might consider this TMI:
It's also an excuse to stay put in a chair and stop moving around to let my pulled groin muscle heal.

I've never entered an actual contest so this might be something good.

Dark Archive

This is something I would very much be interested in doing/competing in, as both a contest and as a chance to improve my techniques.

Yes to all. I am very interested in this.

Dark Archive

I am a beginner but after I get my Reaper bones and paints I would be interested.

Let's go for it... :)

Liberty's Edge

I would be interested depending on the categories. I am medicore at best but it sounds like fun. *still waiting patiently on his Bones to come in*

Would it be possible to have a category called something like: "I know I'm not really competition quality so grade me on a curve." It might encourage not-great level painters to compete since they wouldn't be up against master level painters. Similar concept to your ages 12 and under category.

True Story!

Ed Pugh posted an update on the main Reaper page about the status of pending BONES shipments.

Liberty's Edge

Yeah I knew that with my order being all over the board I was going to be at the end of the list to get my shipment. That is what you get when you spend $300 on mini's and paints. :)

I am just hoping they come in in time for this contest.

Count me in.

Scarab Sages

Don't forget a category for modded minis and custom based minis... Yes, interested.

Pathfinder bestiary category?

Can not go to PaizoCon, can we send them to Paizo?

I'd rather not have to worry about not losing (or breaking) someone else's mini during the show, and having to ship it back afterward...

Sovereign Court

Could an attendee bring a non-attendee's mini for entry? We've got a local player who has been doing some awesome work, but she is not going to be in Seattle this year.

I think I'd be okay with that. Still working out the details, info will be ready by the time the event listing goes public. :)

Both my 10 year old and I would be interested (and maybe entering for a couple non-attendees).

Any word on this? Next Saturday I am on the road for 3 weeks, ending at PaizoCon, so I need to pack what I'm taking to PaizoCon by next Saturday.

1. Is it going to happen? (I don't want to pack more than I need!)
2. What categories?
3. How many entries per category?

Just got back into painting and it would be fun to compete (and learn from all the better painters!)

I'll try to get an answer on this by Tuesday, June 11.

I would definitely be interested.

Well, I think the last-minute nature of this idea has caught miniatures companies unprepared for additional con support for a painting contest at PaizoCon, and I'd rather not have people risk damaging their lovely minis for no prizes, so it's not going to happen this year. BUT I will note that there is interest and plan ahead for it at PaizoCon 2014.

Thanks!

Thanks. At least I won't have to travel with extra minis this year! Definitely something for the future! (and maybe add terrain, casting, drawing, ... would be cool for everyone to share)

It gives me a chance to up my game -- and maybe get close to the skill level that my wife shows -- and what she can do is amazing, considering that she only painted her first mini in November....

The Exchange

Hey Sean,

Since it seems like everyone else isn't going to be participating, if I can find you individually and show you my own miniature can we get a photo of the two of us with you congratulating me on having the best mini at the un-contest?

Ha! Sure. :)
