Taldor Faction Goals Status Report

Taldor

Paizo Employee

Loyal Citizen of the Empire,

Salutations from Magnimar! I have kept apprised of your excellent work in the field while I used my own skills in convincing the local faux aristocracy how much better life could be were they to formally structure their government around legitimate nobility. After countless galas in the Alabaster District, receptions with the Council of Ushers, and banquets with Lord-Mayor Grobaras, I can confidently confide that the folk of Varisia are a different and most recalcitrant people.

Although they are impressed by our tact and skill, the upper crust of Magnimar sees us more as curious allies than as inspiring examples. The bullheaded Lady Verrine Caiteil, moderator of the Council of Ushers, is either blind or so stubborn that she will not concede any fault in the Magnimaran government. That frustratingly guileful lord-mayor hides behind a mask of oafish corpulence, but in fact he is clever enough to survive in a legitimate aristocracy—a fact which has swollen his grotesque ego so far as to compete with his considerable waistline. Even the members of the lowly Varisian Council have scoffed at our superior ways.

Cunning as the local politicians are, I still have a few potent tricks at my command. Redouble your efforts in Varisia, and I shall work behind the scenes to ensure that your accomplishments are seen in a light most favorable both to Taldor and the nascent nobility. In particular I can spin your success in the campaign against the cult of Lissala—you are going to participate, of course—as an example of the excellence that accompanies the Taldan model.

To the ever-glorious empire,
Lady Gloriana Morilla

Sovereign Court

Lady Gloriana

Do not be overly concerned about the Varisians. As Taldor is a fragrant rose, Varisia is a noxious weed. Our ways and customs will not be easily accepted because they are not ready for them. You cannot teach a child Taldan style when still he suckles at his mother's breast.

Of course they are impressed by our tact and skill, but let them be impressed by our casual opulence. We must show them the things they desire, but not share these things unless they join in our ways. Our love and loyalty for our empire must be paramount. It is something that all nations admire.

My efforts will redouble in Varisia. I will seek an agent in Magnimar who can keep me informed of any situation that might arise. If we seek to have these Varisians understand us, then we must understand them as well.

Let the campaign against the cult of Lissala continue and let our noble Taldan agents be at the forefront. Let us be seen by all. Let us be judged by our actions.

Taldan agents, we must shine as never before. Show no fear and be seen to be first to face the most terrible foes.

Our glorious empire goes on and on,

Viscount Ottavio Emilior

Lady Morilla,

Sometimes, it can be found that peasants do not wish to rise out of the muck they wallow in. As Grandmother would say, "You can lead an Ulfen to water, but you cannot make him bathe."

Apparently the Varisians are the same.

Ksenia

Alas poor Taldor, you never got a fair shake, I'll miss the faction.

Sovereign Court

Lady Morilla,

It is clear that the paradigm shift between Baron Jacquo and yourself has caused the machinations of the crown to falter. If public opinion (be it on the battlefield or in their towns,) is still your main goal, I shall include it among my top priorities. Should the leaders of the Society see the error of not deploying me in this war, know that I shall perform all the required duties bestowed upon me by the Crown, Lady Morilla, and my Baron. I have only failed the crown once early in my career as a Pathfinder, and a solitary failure is all that is needed for a real Taldan to learn.

Regretfully bored,
Baronet Hernando Ruiz, Taldan Knight of the Shield

Sovereign Court

To Lady Morilla with pride,

I'm delighted to hear of all the successes in Magnimar, be they yours, the individual Pathfinders, or the Society as a whole. I've just been so busy in Absalom these past few months that I haven't found time to get to Varisia, but I'm actually envious. I love the culture and music of Varisia, possibly because a part of my heritage lies in its people.

It goes without saying that I'd be eager to give one of those hidden ancient wizard-priest-kings a piece of my mind! Philosophizing ways of making peoples' lives worse is no way to build an empire, and anyone who actually wants to practice this sin clearly doesn't know how better to live their lives. I can't help but think that those runelords must have made up their goddess in order to trick them by faith when their ancient magic ran out - "runes, fate and obedience" indeed!

We should be the first to welcome any one of those Runelords to modern Golarion, and - if they're still so set in their sinful ways - give them a long-overdue introduction to Pharasma and Groteus.

Apologetically yours,

Viscountess Elspeth Thisslyn, Witch of the Green Faith

Sovereign Court

OOC: As some background, this post makes heavy reference to my previous post laying out Lady Gabrielle's strategy in Magnimar.

Dear Lady Morilla,

It pleases me to learn of our success in the field against the Lissalans. There is likely to be very little they can do against the might of a united Society, especially with intelligent Taldans showing them how to work together effectively.

I have excellent news on the Magnimarian front as well. The Fangs of Ambition has secured the Triodea as its venue, which I am informed is the gem of the city. It was not without some difficulty, however, as these sorts of contracts are handled much less efficiently in Magnimar than in Oppara. I believe it was my having tea with one of the more prominent elven altos which turned things around. Another of our Pathfinders in Magnimar learned that his favorite play was a tired production called The Inconstant Nymph, and so I all I had to do was make a passing reference to the titular character when expressing my trouble. I do hope I was not too effective, however. I could not stand the thought of that degenerate fancying me. He did ask about you, though, so I extend this word of warning to you, as a friend.

Going forward, if, as you say, you have potent tricks at your command, then I shall be providing the perfect arena for you to make use of them. I anticipate Venture-Captain Heidmarch's assistance in arranging a gala and fundraiser at the Lord-Mayor's Menagerie. If Lady Caiteil is in attendance, that should provide you with a lovely opportunity. The choice of spirits and items for a silent auction may prove crucial to our cause; I will make sure to learn the details of the Lady's tastes and vices.

As you navigate your arena and carry out your expedition, Gloriana, I am creating mine in Varisia. Soon enough, we shall all meet you at the middle, and the banner we plant together at the summit will be the sigil of the Empire.

May Shelyn's charms carry you,
-Lady Gabrielle d'Apcher

I would not be so sure. By the looks of their own messages, Cheliax and Osirion are faring quite horribly when compared to Taldor and all others.

Who Krunch hit? Grobaras bad? Krunch hit someone right? <silence>

Krunch hangs his head and slowly walks away, sighing.

Sovereign Court

Now, Krunch, you've been doing so well these past few weeks. Sometimes, when they think you're going to hit them, you don't actually need to hit anyone.

...Though, if you're on a mission and you encounter any of those people with their snake badges, then hitting is just to be expected.

*Cordelia sweeps in carrying a bundle with several small pamphlets.*

"Oh dear, it does seem that we have not been living up to our full potential when it comes to extending Taldor's influence. Let me hand out a few of these scrolls I just printed," she hands out a few, starting with people she recognizes like Viscount Ottavio and Lady Gabrielle, "And hopefully this information will allow us to achieve our goals together!"

The pamphlet bears the title Marquise Cordelia Livia Cassandra Elysia Perseis's Guide to Influencing Varisia's Fledgling Aristocracy

Oh, and please let me know if you have anything else to add! I could always make some revisions or additions.

Sovereign Court

That is an excellent guide. Much thanks.

Sovereign Court

My fellow Taldans,

Where many have seen a note of failure in Lady Moorilla's missive, I see instead the fruit of the intelligence gathering for which Taldor is renowned. Indeed, we have identified one within Magnimar who has the capabilities to thrive within an aristocracy, though the Lord Mayor does leave a bit to be desired. Should we turn his attentions and efforts towards realizing the goal of establishing a true aristocracy, he should prove an effective, though egotistical, ally.

We have also identified those who are blind to the path we show them or are simply set in their ways. These are those with whom we should redouble our efforts in showing the errors of their current course.

And of course, there are the common folk of Varisia. If we can prove to them the value of having a strong aristocracy standing between the dangers of the wild lands that is Varisia and their homes, of having a wealthy aristocracy in place to purchase their wares, of having an honorable aristocracy to dispense justice for those who have been wronged, their voices may add additional weight to the call for what we desire.

For Princess Eutropia and Taldor!

You are welcome. Use it wisely in the coming trials ahead.

Most I got to do so far was beat the snot out of a few dozen cultists. They had the audacity to have a party and not invite me. Then they do bad stuff to the guests. Of course I did happen to be the one to steal a flask, empty it, refill it with water, and plant it on someone else...but hey its not like I was beating the tar out of him. (I just subcontracted it out.) Then I was sickened for a few minutes....must have been the ale. I wasn't going to drink it, but it was just lying there all nice and still like.

I did find some missing people and let them know how great Taldor is...maybe they'll turn up at the docks sometime soon. This part of Varisia isn't like Riddleport, I need to get back there.

I did notice how this weird cult likes to operate underground. My next purchase is a endless water decanter...flood the little rats out and chop up anything that moves.

Well back to the rum, until the next post office run.

Sovereign Court

Perhaps I should invite you all to my next Party, maybe our combined efforts can move these Varisians.

"Indeed, the time is growing short for us, but I believe we shall persevere and rise to the occasion, as we Taldans always have. I shall hope to appear at your next party, if I am available, and speak upon what I have learned. In case I cannot attend, do take a few copies of this text of mine and hand them out to whoever seem like promising candidates. Within are many pieces of information I have discovered or divined about our potential new allies, the fledgling aristocracy of Varisia."

*Cordelia hands out several copies of the text, the content of which can be found here.*

Lady Gabrielle approaches her friend Cordelia, smiling as she fans the summer heat from herself.

"There is no need to worry, Lady Cordelia. Though the Society has turned its eye elsewhere, my own efforts remain constant. Your lovely guide has been quite helpful, as it has guided my decisions of just who to invite to the first fundraisers for The Fangs of Ambition. Regardless of where the Pathfinders travel, the assembly of their aristocracy shall continue, as they are being shown how to create the rest of it themselves."

"Speaking of, what is this I have heard of you and Alastria? Do indulge me, Cordelia."

OOC: "Alastria" is drawn from Cordelia's profile.

Sovereign Court

(OOC: I made it up to give her a name of a march to administrate)

"Alastria is my family's ancestral holding, a border march located to the northeast of Cassomir and extending into the Verduran Forest. After I proved true mastery of the arcane, my father abdicated as Marquis, and thus became I the Marquise of Alastria."

"Truly, I have not had much time to aid in Taldor's goals after writing my guide, and so I have been hoping that my fellow agents could do so by proxy, with my guidance and assistance in the form of the writings. I'm afraid I have been sent on a secret mission, and I'll say only that I seek to prevent a cataclysm anticipated by Groetus, after finding ancient prophecies from the Age of Legend that predicted the death of Aroden and proved accurate in our Age of Lost Omens. I fear I cannot speak more on the matter."

(OOC: Not spoiling the name, but Cordelia is in "something sanctioned")

The Lady nearly bursts with excitement at the news. "It is so lovely to hear you say that. My own family's holdings include the March of Margeride, on the Sellen, due north of Cassomir. You and I are neighbors!"

Lady Gabrielle pauses to consider something for a brief moment before continuing.

"That is, if one more obstacle can be cleared first. It might seem insurmountable, but fortunately, Cordelia, I believe you would be able to help me with overcoming it. To be brief, I am need of a match, between myself and a suitable husband. I am certain that finding one will not take you very long. On that note... does anyone in particular come to mind?"

Greetings Noble Taldor Faction,

It has come to my attention that there is many numbers of your faction in Varisia my homeland. I was born and raised in Korvosa. A city steeped in culture and tradition. I suggest that you are wasting your time putting coin and effort into Magnimar. Those peasants know not what true beauty and culture of the arts are. Korvosa for example has a amazing theatre and opera house that provides both classical Chelish and Taldor plays. I am a large supporter of the arts because of the rich history. As a chelish person our two peoples share a common heritage of the arts. If you ever wish to tour our lovely city I would gladly accept such invitation. I believe better investment opportunities is with our city of Korvosa. They know not what it means to be a true Noble and class.
After hearing the conditions in which your nobles lived in Magnimar I am honor bound by my noble blood to extend invitations to my world. Varisia is a beautiful country. Do not judge us all by the uncultured peasants and upstarts of Magnimar.

Signed, Very Respectfully,
Sven Von Jeggare of the Noble House of Jeggare,
Noble of Korvosa, Defender of Varisia,
Servant of the Cheliax Faction, May the rule of House Thrune continue with wisdom and honor.

Sovereign Court

"Korvosa is already in my guide, Sven. Feel free to submit more material about Korvosa if you have it, but I will be vetting any information from an outside source carefully for accuracy or bias."

*Cordelia turns her attention back to Gabrielle.*

"Hmm...Oh I am rusty, my dear Gabrielle! I fear I could find you a Thassilonian clockwork construct faster than a husband these days. However, I might have some ideas, particularly since my main expertise in matchmaking is in the form of crafting strategic marriage alliances based on family trees. You are looking for a man with the pull to cement your claim, but what else do you prioritize? Age? Love of the theater? Affiliation with Eutropian elements of the political landscape? Martial or magical prowess?"

Sovereign Court

The Lady considers the question for a moment.

"Though it would be entirely natural to show a preference for a gentleman of vigor and wit, I am afraid that I am not free to desire such a match above a husband of excellent standing, sizable holdings, and great renown. My match will have to be one which Mother and Father would be excited for. Their eagerness is of prime importance today. His opinion of the Princess is of no matter, and neither is his skill with spell or blade. A demonstrated love of the theater would go quite a ways in the opinion of my mother. Even with the reality of the situation, I place full trust in your ability to uncover a pleasing candidate."

Sovereign Court

So much curiosity and intrigue, education is always the best method to teach how one should act in polite society.

*He softly begins to play his Lyre to ease the tensions in the room*

Sovereign Court

The Marquis du Ruum is more than happy to fill in for any suitable engagement. With a mere 2 weeks left in my Pathfinder term, I'll soon retire to my island estate to brew rum and raise a new generation of Taldans. I follow the theater sufficiently that I've purchased my own. Its far nicer than those I've had the mischance to visit...and minus the bloodstains all across the floors.

Sovereign Court

The right splash of blood can add a bit of mystery to the theater, of course i recommend a nice stained and lacquered dark wood to keep it from being a point of distaste.

*He continues playing the Lyre while speaking, his eyes focused on the room with practiced ease.*

Rum is nice, though a bit... harsh. If your going to a island estate, may i recommend a nice wine. The salt air, seems to concentrate the fruits flavor... rocky and harsh... strangely seems to bring the the best.

Sovereign Court

My dear Darvic: Wine used to be my past-time but after a few suicide missions from our illustrious venture monkeys; I realized Pathfinders need Rum...lots of it and in very large glasses. Not mixed with anything sweet, no fruity additives, no just the Rum.

With that market knowledge in hand, I started growing sugar on my island estate. The fermenting and distilling process is simple enough. The orders keep coming in from Absolom, the Hao Jin Tapestry, Varisia, and well wherever our mighty ten pour the society next. Whatever few come back, I set them up with a tumbler or two or three or a dozen...the shakes go away once unconsciousness sets in.

To Life!

Sovereign Court

*Tarn cracks a smile*

Well played Sir, well played indeed.
