Advice

Hey guys,

So the Rise of the Runelord campaign I run has been on pause for a while now, as people haven't been able to play.

One of the players however had a bit of free time and wanted me to run some of the AP for them, so to not disrupt the main story, I continued where everyone left off but with a side quest that had an invisible portal open about 15 feet down and 10 foot forwards over the water, only accessible by jumping from the top of the old light.

How did they discover it? They killed the thing that came out of it (Anti-Santa, it was a christmas themed event).

Anyway, my GMPC Cleric (level 6) and her level 5 Magus are now in this dark and twisted world that mirrors their own in place. The entire landscape is made of sharp and jagged, black crystalised rock with gold veins running throughout, with purple water (caused by different chemicals mixing together) and green acid rain.

There's a building in the distance that looks like a giant sundial and well, I haven't fleshed things out yet, but the planet is desolate and the idea I had was the only way to close the portal would be from the inside.

How could they escape back to their own plane? What creatures would be appropriate to put in? What dangers could await them, and how weird or sci-fi can I make this?

My imagination isn't helping me for once. :/

Thanks guys!

if its Christmas-themed, drow for elves. think of the toys they make! They could be having a Xmas celebration in black leather with red velvet belts trimmed in dwarvish beards. . . I mean white fur!

Lovecraft is tempting, but thats sorta over the top. Similarly over the top would be anything with a Gigeresque Alien theme. I think this would be a much for a level 5 mage.

On the other hand, you could run it that way, like a horror movie. Find companions along the way, everyone gets killed off. Other players might want in on it, so have stat blocks ready.

Mz Mage realizes there is no way back. The cleric and the mage get to the control room and (before it can tongue strike you), she kisses her chest-bursted familiar alien freakie goodbye and detonoates the nuke.

Later, miss mage wakes up screaming from a nightmare and realizes its all a dream . . . . til she looks down and sees an artifact from it!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Really, killing is too good for characters.
*whistles, walking away into the swirling fog*

I almost forgot . . .if you do it right, Mz Mage is going to cut her beautiful long hair into a bob, dye it black, a dash of flourescent color, maybe a dog collar, and acuqire a really bad attitude towards any Rune Lord freakiness. "I've seen better than that" . . and channels energy, leaving little piles of ash behind. Well you get the idea.

I like the idea of Horror, but I also like the idea of Drama, and if possible would like to keep both characters alive.

I think the Half-Elf is on 15hp and both characters have used about half of their Spells for the day.

The building in the background could be a massive fenced off complex, with all kinds of horrors roaming the desolate plains, then inside the Complex, Drow creating future tech weapons or something could be cool.

I'd have to be careful though, as I don't want it to change things for the current party. So, as they have cool weapons already, I think armour made out of the black and gold crystal, possibly with some lights in could be kind of cool, but it wouldn't give the character anything special for wearing it. IT'd just looks otherworldly.

Maybe with a prisoner in there, who they can free to help them escape.

Possibly have this whole place as a created demi-plane or another planet altogether. Not sure yet.

Any other suggested ideas would be great in light of this. :)
