In the kingmaker game I'm running some of the players have expressed interest in creating heraldry for their families. Does anyone have recommendations as to software, or websites that let you create family crests, ect? I've seen a lot of garbage out there, but very little in the way of templates for shields/banners/etc. Alternately, has anyone put together anything using photoshop or illustrator for their games? I'd like something that has a decent library of images to work with and/or good clipart resources to create templates on my own.
Looking forward to hearing what might be out there.

You could also try: -
http://www.heraldryclipart.com/
Great - especially the pages on symbolism.
http://www.makeyourcoatofarms.com/app.asp or
http://inkwellideas.com/coat_of_arms/
If you want to sit down & make some.
I have used a different creater in the past for my groups flag - but...
...sigh...the site doesn't seem to be working anymore...

A lot of the classic heraldy stuff is based on the Anglo-French tradition. Since Brevoy has a more "eastern Europe" feel to it than that, you might look at some Polish heraldry.

Try here. I've already made a lot on the site, and appropriated some more.
This is so badass and timesaving I cannot even express it with words. I have used several others, even paid for one, and none of them look as slick, are as easily usable, and exportable as this one.
Now if they would only add a few more symbols, like a horn, key, flower, and key... and a few more animals like stag, bear, and fish, I would have a one stop shop.
In any case, it let me make some long overdue heraldry for many of the houses in my game which have very basic shields, so thank you Tauric!

Fantasy Shields
Is really nice, but it would take forver to find a good one, so I'll still be creating my own.
But nice in case I quickly need to make something up. :D
Awesome work!

Fantasy Shields
Nice - bit limited in the Beast and Devices you can incorporate - but works well if you settle for the Polish style of one coat of arms for a whole clan (or in our case Noble Family)

Does anyone else use family mottoes like they showed for the given noble families of Brevoy? YOu know like "Winter is Coming" or "Hear me Roar"?
I have in the past. At one stage (well pre-kingmaker) I developed full sets of arms - including Crest, Supporters and mottoes for all sorts of noble families. However, I came to the conclusion that the only bit that really stuck with most players was the fact that someone had their own arms.
Recently, I have been using a a single shape (similar concept to a Japanese style Mon) to identify group / family allegiance and incorporating that within individual arms.
Interestingly, I now have people with dual allegiance and sporting the symbols of two different grouping.
Our baron (for example) is minor member of the Orlovsky family - so his shield sports the Orlovsky eagle and the Five Orbs of their new nation.

Bit late to the thread, but the heraldrically challenged might also want to visit www.tioh.hqda.pentagon.mil
It contains all the heraldry (I assume all, there are thousands) of the various divisions and squadrons of the US military. Some guys who've been in the service might object to seeing the heraldry used this way, so ask the group first. Guy I spoke to didn't see a problem with it, but I suppose that could vary. Also, if your group has THAT one guy, make sure to impress upon them that the images containing fighter jets and missiles are not appropriate (Assuming standard Kingmaker, homebrew could go anywhere).
There are tons of swords, patterns and flames to go around, so the only problem should be picking one.
