I'm not advocating for slavery, but you aren't getting that it's still completely subjective. How you are raised and your society will affect what you see as good or evil. We can easily look back and say, yes, Slavery was wrong..in hindsight from a more progressive society...so what will they say about us 200 years from now that many people today think is accetable? Will they think us barbarous for having capital punishment? Much of the western world already feels that way about us (The U.S.)

I hope the point is made.

But D&D Alignment isn't subjective - its absolute. The Laws of Lawful Good are to the benefit of every one, not a few, not may. That way no one can tell you who qualifies as a citizen and who doesn't. Ideal LG would ensure that everyone is equally represented. From that point of view our own modern 'representative' governments are oppressive and varying degrees of evil.

For people to say alignment isn't morality its an outlook....as if someones views aren't governed by morality? lulz.

And a system that includes "good" and "evil" isn't part of morality? double lulz try again.

and nothing is "absolute" unless your game has one omnipotent and "infallible" god who is real and declares what is good and bad (for your world)

and unless your world has a complete hegemonic system to declare globally what is the law then there is no unified view on the law.

If there are 10 million people in your world then there are 10 million viewpoints on what each alignment means.

Your Lawful good could easily be another's chaotic evil. And lets look at your example above...the law benefits everyone and not just few or many..you could easily say thats lawful good in intent and chaotic evil in practice as you try to please everyone and then please no one..

people saying the Constitution is lawful good..someone like Aristotle might disagree with a pretty persuasive argument about the chaos and problems with democracy which makes it chaotic evil.

Shadow Lodge

It's a descriptor that is based on your outlook which is influenced by your morality.

:)

We must go deeper!

What is the alignment of the alignment system!

Inception!

I refer you to It's a Wonderful Life.

There are two banking institutions in Bedford Falls.

Henry Potter (LE) uses the lawful-neutral laws to better himself, spread his power, and increase his own influence.

George Bailey (LG) uses the same laws to help people. He lives in a broken down old house because he refuses to profit unjustly at the expense of others. He has a moment of grave doubt, and he fails himself and others -- no one is perfect.

Dr. Rieux in The Plague by Camus is a good example of Lawful good.

I'd also say Cadfael, another healer, but he seems far more neutral good to me, with only some bowing and editing of his opinions to what the church and its hierarchy says.

Lawful Good speaks of a person's goal: To improve the world, not just better himself. That is the Good part. The Lawful part means that he or she feels that the best way to get there is through law. Not just any laws, but laws that promote predictability, supports entered deals, limit predation on the weak, and defend those who are threatened. These are laws that actively focus on and promote stable relationships and clear roles for people, for the most part.

This is an extremely interesting blind spot for so many people. They feel that Lawful alignment means you are ready to support ANY law just because it is written down. Well, here's a shocker: Not every law is lawful. A law that says that the state can kill any of its citizens just because the king wants entertainment is very much the direct antithesis of what a Lawful Good (and indeed almost all other Lawful people, even the Evil ones) want in a society. It would probably have been better to call it Orderly or something else instead. Indeed, a law that states that anyone can say what they think without fear of reprisal is about as close you can get to a Chaotic law.
