What is dotting?

And how do I do it? I'm new to the forums

1 person marked this as a favorite.

When you post in a thread, it shows up afterwards with a 'dot' after it's subject title to make it easier to visually recognize/track/find in future.

By making this post right now, i am also technically 'dot'ing this thread.

When you see someone post 'dotting' it just means they are marking it to keep tabs on for later but did not have a relevant post to make at this time.

If you reply to a topic, even with just a one-word post, that topic will henceforth show up with a dot beside its name in the list of topics, and be easy for you to find via the "My Account" section.

Therefore many people post one-line replies to threads they think are important and that they want to read later or come back to frequently, just so they'll be "dotted" for them.

Edit: Wow, beaten by a single second.

When you post in a thread, a little dot appears next to it on the list of threads, so it's easier for you to find later. A lot of people made one-word "dotting" posts in order to make those dots appear if they want to follow the thread but don't have anything to contribute.

Note that the dot is still there even if you later delete your post, so there's no functional need to leave "dotting" posts in the thread. I suppose not deleting them is a way of expressing interest.

Looks like I would have been wrong, had I been the first respondent, I would have said it was Damage Over Time (DOT) like a bleed, acid, burning, or other similar affect. I also view a spell like Summon Monster and Spiritual Weapon as a form of DOT.

Anyways, apparently it also means that forum stuff.

Now, if anyone can tell me what 'spamming' means....

The best I can make out is that you do something a lot. : /

Phrase context would help since i know of several, but i'll try.

Spamming can be equivalent to the 'one trick pony' where you do one thing over and over ...and over.

example (no flames!)

In 4e, you just spam the same at will power in every battle.

Your wizard build just spams magic missile.

Many Magus builds just spam Shocking grasp.

etc.

Tone wise, it takes the repeated action reference and adds in negative undertones of monotony and/or boredom.

The trained monkey can spam your attacks for you by hitting the button over and over.

normally people who try and have ads in the message boards

like "d30prd come over buy our stuff" and will hit it as often as they can flooding the boards with it.

@Zahir ibn Mahmoud ibn Jothan
now now PFRPG is turn based so that would be DPT damage per-turn

Thanks. Yeah, that is the sense of 'spamming' that I meant.
