Help with the build of a sorcerer

Advice

We recently started the Rise of the Runelords adventure path. I don't usually go for classes that concentrate on casting, but the party needed a spell caster so I decided to give a go at sorcerer. I'm playing a catfolk (extra charisma and dexterity for the initiative seemed like a great idea!) and I chose the Arcane bloodline. I want to focus on buff/debuff stuff. We just turned lev3 and I'm not sure what feat to get. As I said, I don't usually go for spellcasters so I'm unsure of the feat-path to follow. I've already taken improved initiative as my first feat.

Any advice would be nice

Arcane bloodline? I'd recommend taking a familiar over an object. Even at low levels a monkey familiar can still throw things (Gel shards are GREAT at low levels) and at higher levels can be a mini-scout if you go with Imp Familiar and of course it can wand, wand, wand away!

Also if you are not 100% sold on Catfolk look at some of the other races that get alternate racial trait of extra spells. Sorcerers have limited spell selection and the additional spells can be a huge boon if you are taking this character to higher levels.

Also the guides under the class guides are very helpful and I recomend them all highly.

For a sorcerer, Expanded Arcana is very nice (add a spell to your list of spells known)

So is Spell Focus in a school you use a lot.

Spell Penetration is one of my favorites as well.

You might want to THINK about Craft Wondrous item though, if crafting is something you think you might enjoy.

Extend Spell metamagic is always nice, augment summoning is also really good, Toughness and Combat Casting can also be realy nice

Well the buff stuff doesn't really need any help feat-wise, but the debuff stuff is at least partially going to run into save-or-suck. So you'll want to take Spell Focus and anything that can improve your save DC.

AtomicGamer mentioned the ones I would have mentioned, and another one that never hurts is Toughness.

But I would get Expanded Arcana because more spell variety is good.

Then again I just noticed that at level 3, your bloodline arcana is the ability to use a metamagic feat once per day. So you might consider taking a metamagic feat. Now at level three, even a metamagic feat that only uses up a spell slot of one higher would only apply to your level zero spells, but by next level (char level 4) you will get 2nd level spell slots, so you could apply a +1 metamagic feat to a level 1 spell in your (1+1) level 2 spell slot.

Then with your bloodline power you just got, once a day you can use the metamagic without increasing the time (normally for a sorcerer, using metamagic feats on your spells increases the casting time from Standard Action to Full, so basically you can only cast that round, not move).

Good feats that are only +1 metamagic are Ectoplasmic (affect ghosts etc), Elemental (convert damage type), Selective (pick a safe square in an area spell so that yourself or an ally can go unscathed) or silent spell (cast without needing to speak or cast when in a silence spell effect area).

Also, while others dont like it, i like the metamagic feat Merciful Spell. It has a +0 bump so you could use it on any spell without taking up a higher slot! It makes your spell damage non-lethal, so you can unload on someone but still take a prisoner. Or my motivation is that my sorcerers dont want to be murder machines. If your alignment is good or you dont want to kill all your foes, Merciful Spell is a good metamagic you can apply at any time with no spell level cost increase! And with your bloodline arcana, you could do it once a day as a standard action instead of a full action. You know, in case you need to walk around a corner to get a non-lethal spell on a runner you want to interrogate. :)

The game has already started, so, yeah, the catfolk race is very much set... And I find it lots of fun to play too! As for the familiar, I got one too. I have to admit I didn't think about optimizing my character when I picked it thought. I got a cat... Yeah, a catfolk with a cat. It was just too tempting. And again, lots of fun to play.

AtomicGamer: with Arcane bloodline, I get New Arcana at level 9, 13 and 17. So I don't think I'll use a feat slot on Expanded Arcana.

Spell focus seems like a good idea for my lev3 feat...

Just remember that spell focus is school specific, so if you take Spell Focus Conjuration but you dont have any Conjuration spells that require saves, you might want to specify a different school.

Sovereign Court

Third level is kind of hard for a Sorcerer that isn't already planned out to take Feat Chain -X.

Let's see here. Your playing a Catfolk so I'll assume that you've got access to the Advanced Race Guide. How about a Catfolk feat?

Black Cat could be useful, though as a Sorcerer your AC won't be horrifically high later on and Rise goes to a pretty high level. Could always be used to negate a melee crit against you though which would be nice. The others might fit your character a bit though don't seem obviously useful for a Sorcerer.

The suggestion of taking a metamagic feat is something I'll recommend as well. Sorcerers as a whole can get a lot of mileage out of their metamagic and Arcane Bloodline Sorcerers even more so.

Take Improved familiar at level 7 and upgrade your cat to a Sylvanshee (a better cat).

Best +1 metamagic feat for none blasters imo is extend spell.. Double duration mage armor opens up other slots for damage/buff etc..

Morgen: black cat is definitely something I'll consider even though I've manage to stay out of melee up until now. I won't be able to always avoid it though.

I guess if I decide to pick focus spell, I should look carefully at the spells I plan to pick in the next levels.

Although metamagic feats seem pretty nice, I'm thinking I should wait for my next feat since, as its been pointed out, most would only apply to lev0 spells until I can cast lev2.

Sometimes it can be cool to step out of your comfort zone and play a different class than you're used to

Other times it's just going to make you unhappy

Just out of curiosity, OP, what sort of character do you normally play?

Ranger is probably my comfort class. It has SOME spells, but you can practically play it by omitting them completely. And, for me, the ranger is THE classic adventurer.

I don't have a favorite race, but I've never played an elf or a halforc. The halforc because I'm not sure i could play it right, and the elf because I've always thought they were kinda lame. Elves have nice bonuses in the game, but I just dislike elves in general.

Heighten is my favorite Metamagic for sorcerers, to keep their limited spells known useful as long as you can. If you don't take it now, I'd consider it soon.
