Decipher Scroll

Rules Questions

Decipher the Writing (RAW): The writing on a scroll must be
deciphered before a character can use it or know exactly what spell it contains. This requires a read magic spell or a successful Spellcraft check (DC 20 + spell level). Deciphering a scroll is a full-round action.

Question:I understand that I have to do this every time I want to use a scroll. Or is just for scrolls I "find" in treasures? Or Can I consider that a scrolls that I brought to the adventure (in my backpack) are already deciphered?

You have to do it for every scroll you get, but not the ones you craft yourself.

You don't have to wait to decipher the scroll though. It doesn't have to be done right before you use it. Once you decipher it, that scroll stays deciphered. You can decipher a scroll, and then not use it until years later, and it stays deciphered.

case: at the beginning of PFS scenario a level 1 Wizard have a level 1 scroll with mage armor that he brought on his backpack. Can he activate it without decipher it because one can assume he did that before the scenario?

Shadow Lodge

I'm guessing that if you start with a scroll at level 1 it's assumed that you have already deciphered it, but afterwards you need to keep track of which you've deciphered.

Would it be difficult to decipher it first thing in the scenario? I assume you have Read Magic, since wizards always have it in their spellbook and can even prepare it from memory, without a spellbook.

I'm running a beginners group on pathfinder and still trying o get a hang of the rules my self. We have a bard who didn't take read magic, in part because I forgot how cheap and usefull scrolls can be. My question is: Is there any reason why you cant use the take 20 rule on deciphering the scroll? And if not, isn't it reasonable that the vharacter has already deciphred all the scoll he/she has bought beforehand?

Only the usual restrictions.

Can also use UMD at DC 25+SL.

A Page of Spell Knowledge does not list a zero level version, but the notes in the Table Estimating Magic Item Gold Piece Values states "Spell Level: A 0-level spell is half the value of a 1st-level spell for determining price.". So a PoSK[0] would be priced at 500 gp.

For any scroll you had coming in, it should be assumed you have deciphered them.

Since Take-20 is OK, if you have a single rank, and no Int penalty, you can decipher up to 4th level scrolls. If you do not have a rank, you cannot use spellcraft to do this, but must use UMD at DC 25+SL.
