I have run campaigns over many years I've been in the hobby. After a few years off I've returned.
This may be a silly question but I want to run combats with a recurring villain, a barbarian who is stirring up a revolution. The party will run into some close quarter fighting him a few times but don't want him to die if I can help it but without it robbing the players of the chance of an early kill if they are clever.
I just want effective ideas of him making escapes when the tide turns against him.
Thank you for your advice

Make a getaway power part of his package of abilities.
low levels, a ring of invisibility might suffice, middling levels a Cape of the Mountebank should work.
In either case, give the PCs a means to know that he might pull this kind of trick before they encounter him.
If they are clever enough to prepare and neutralize the enemy's "plan A" for escape, good for them, if not, let him get away without feeling bad about it.
Make sure to play up the look of horror in his eyes when the heroes open the combat attempting to sunder his cloak.

At lower levels you could have the players run away from him (aka, make him to strong for them so they have to run away.) If you do this make sure he has a reason not to follow them at that time. Reasons could be something he's protecting, or someone. Maybe the party has knocked a friend of him unconscious.

Low level? How bout this one.
Feather token Catapult (cursed) + single use feather fall token.
Catapult normally produces a siege weapon for its summoner to use.
the cursed version puts the user in the basket of the weapon and launches it immediately.
He has placed the token in his boot and can snap it with a minor effort of his big toe.
Barbarian goes to Neg hp?
Snap, and catapult out of the problem.
