A Painful realization

RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 32 , Marathon Voter Season 6, Marathon Voter Season 7, Champion Voter Season 8, Marathon Voter Season 9 aka GM_Solspiral

It finally happened, I saw my item. Aw sh*t, after looking over so many submissions I see all its flaws.

-I over complicated the description not trusting the voting public would "get it."

-Its too long, see above.

-The writing is somewhat indelicate.

-I missed a key detail in the mechanics

Conclusion: still allot better than most of the entries I've seen but if I'm honest with myself this was not superstar writing. Having seen the item in action its a superstar item, but I submitted this more than a week early and really should have edited more, and spent my word count more concisely. If I make the top 32 it'll be towards the bottom of that barrel, but I suspect I'll b in the top 100 at best.

Time to start thinking about items for superstar 2014...

I feel your pain, man. Think I´m in the same boat. But I guess there are no losers, only students.

Liberty's Edge Marathon Voter Season 6

If you are on here following the contest closely and such, I guarantee you are at worst middle of the pack. These really awful ones can only have been written by people only skimming the contest information.

I feel I am in the same position.

I made some mistakes with my item that I wish I could correct, however I feel like you I still may have a shot at being able to be in the running.

In short I understand. *Hug* As, well as, *Nod* there is always next year for us both.

I think the important thing is that we're able to see the flaws and make notes going into the future. A lot of people are incapable of that, so I think it's a great mark of professionalism to be able to say "Okay, this and this needs improvement. I'm going to fix it and make sure I don't do it again next time."

I know there are things I would change in my item, looking back on it. Especially after seeing all of these submissions. This is my first year actually submitting something, though, so if it ends up just being a learning experience, I'm fine with that.

Still, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we all make it into the top 32. I can dream, right?

Well at least Waren and I won't be lonely in that boat we all seem to be in.

Passive writing - something you can be taught and can learn to do better

Template issues - aggravating but a willingness to practice can solve this

The idea - that's the crux, good ideas shine.

Don't lose heart yet :)

I rewrote my item this morning to fix a minor hole in the mechanics and was surprised how much better the flow came out. And the word count was lower too. It's not wildly different, but I can see it as being the difference between "top 32" and "not quite good enough". Fingers crossed. :p

I believe I am in this boat as well. I have not yet seen my item in the voting, even though I only see a new item once in 10 pairs now. (Is that a good sign?) I know the item has better in formatting than half the entries because I read the posting on how to format. Unfortunately, formatting is not everything and I'd be very surprised now if I'm in the top 32.

Next year may be more interesting for me....

When I finally saw my item it was still what I thought it was... there was one sentence that I could have written better, but I realized that about five minutes after I submitted it... it was still better (IMO) than the majority of items I have seen, but was not the best (I have a list of about 7 items I have seen that I thought were clearly better than my item).

I'd definitely have taken a different approach now that I've been judging for a while.

Star Voter Season 6, Star Voter Season 9

After finally seeing my own item in the judging, I have come to the realization that one of the huge things I didn't like in other items, I skirted in my own.

Hopefully, I stayed on the far side of that uncanny valley, but I have serious doubts now that I didn't have before I thought about it.

Here's hoping!

I know how you feel, man. If anything it helps one become more aware of how to do it better next time, at least, and yours might not as bad as you fear it is. :)

Shadow Lodge Star Voter Season 6, Dedicated Voter Season 7, Star Voter Season 9

I think I experienced this last year and the year before. I think this time I did an item that may compete....finally, in my third year. But still I have some fears about this one minor detail which is very interpretable according to the rules and I'm not sure my item will appeal with the new judgeing rules.

So regardless, I'm worried.

Good luck to all of us, take care.

I finally came across my own item, and maybe I'm biased but I still think I have a good shot this year.

I feel it too. Why did I bother previewing if I was not going to see the formatting mistakes.

Hopefully it's not an "ugly baby" that I think is beautiful and my mistakes will be forgiven.

Amazing what coming back to something with a fresh pair of eyes can do. That's why I always leave it alone for a few days and concentrate on something else before coming back to it for a final edit. Sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees.

There is good news GMSsolspiral. If you can see an issue you can learn from it. That is a major step in the process. I invite you (& anyone) to come practice with us in the Blazing 9 this April :)

I too am worried I should have done something different with the different judging system :) only 27 days until the reveal!

Marathon Voter Season 6, Marathon Voter Season 7, Star Voter Season 8

when the voting first started I was worried that maybe with the new system I should have tried harder to 'sexy' up my item a bit more (with out over doing it), but the more voting I do, the better I feel about my entry as it is.

yeah I am in the same spot. But ehhh... if I don't make it this year I will next year!
