It was said that once the game goes live and public that you wont be able to change any character you create. So lets say tieflings get added at some later date and you want to play one then you have to start all over. While I understand this, I would think that all your hard work should count for something concerning any new characters that are created later.
So I was thinking would a family or for the sake of sense clan system be added to help new characters based off older characters accomplishments. Like minor bonuses or certain abilities of the other characters focus.
Agreements, disagreements, or any feedback would be welcome.

Honestly i think the best solution would be to allow limited conversions.
For example. Lets say that tieflings get released. You allow a single one way conversion. the conversion would have to happen within say one or two months of the release. There are no take backs, which means if you convert you can never go back, period. But GW i didnt think id hate being a tiefling so much...GW's reply should be when converting you were given 10 warnings that it cannot be undone, and you confirmed each one...sorry nothing we can do.
Same if a new class gets added. Or perhaps have the same but require a MT to activate it, say 5-10 bucks, also one way. Nothhing else changes, so if you change into an alchemist from a fighter and you dont have any alchemist gear, well guess what you are out of luck. hope you can afford to buy it quick.

I don't think the classes are really needed, since nothing you do will bar you from learning the new "class" as soon as it's added.
The races however, simply allow an MTX purchase of a Change Looks/Race token. Everyone with a character for at least a month or was part of beta, could get one for free when the new race is released.
Or, don't do anything of the sort, which would result in the new races being rarer, or even require an account to have a couple months time, non-transferable, before you can make such a character.
Depends on whether they want to make such races rare. If they do want rare, they can limit it, in which case only people who really want it will set themselves back to get it. But if the rarity doesn't matter then yes, simply allow an MTX.

Random wouldn't be fair though, wwhat if it lands on someone who doesn't want it, or someone who played for a week then never touched again?
Earning it would be better, and more fair, as those who want it can work for it, and it isn't given out to unappreciative folks /instead/ of the deserving folks.

they will most likely allow a one time conversion for people that have been playing before the new race goes live by a set amount of time.

There could be a quick-training period that lets you catch a character up to some degree. Say you've been playing for 12 months, with a paid subscription during all that time. If you started a new character with a newly-released race, you could train 25% faster for a while by buying and applying extra training time in the MTX store.

Not my ideal way of doing, can be painful on the wallet, but a good way to do it non the less. I know this issue is something they are looking into among other things, probably keeping it on the back burner until other things are handled first.

I agree with Darkmind, if you want it then work for it. If not then do not waste your time.
But thats still leaves the system thing. I really do not think that the type of game they are going for is going to allow changes like race. They have said as much in the blog when the subject came up, they reserve the right to change their mind, still would not count on it and understand it. Thats why I would like a family/clan system. Someone said LotR had one but the only one that I have exp with fairly recently was the family system from SWTOR, which did give certain bonuses and in fact encourage the creation and play of different races.

There is in theory a level cap, you cap all skills. But as they said that a level 20 single class character for example would take around 2 years to build, I dont see anyone maxing out. So this is good for new characters sense the power gap wont be huge. It does not discourage high levels, just means those high levels will be those that put the work in.
Also if your interest was only in abilities then you would not care what race you are. If someone is willing to start over just to be the race they prefer then that shows their resolve. I just feel that should be helped along. Not enough to give their main a free do over but enough to help them along the path they have chosen. ;)

@OmniChaos, Ryan did say in the Link Dead Gaming interview that we would likely be able to change our race during Early Enrollment as they add the rest of the Races to the game.
I think it’s unlikely that we’ll offer the players the ability to transform from one race to another, with the caveat that because we will not have all the core races in the game the day we begin Early Enrollment, we’ll probably let Early Enrollees change races as we add them during that period. Once we reach Open Enrollment, I don’t think that policy will continue. A big part of making an MMO good is forcing players to make meaningful decisions. ”Redos” rob those choices of meaning, which makes the game much less interesting.

Yes I am aware of that, thats why I used a race they have not even mentioned adding yet. Also that is limited to the early enrollment period, I was considering a year into PFO being public. While the issue is far off, the advantages of a family/clan system would be helpful right off the bat. As well as help with the future additions.
Personally I would be suspect of polymorphing without a duration. PvP wont be a issue if baleful polymorph is allowed. One powerful mage will turn a town into a petting zoo in a few game days. x3

MTX is probably the simplest way to go.
In order to keep the racial choice upon character creation meaningful, though, they could limit the availability of the MTX and make them very specific.
It's not fair to say that a person made a choice if they created a Human character rather than a Tiefling if Tieflings weren't in the game at that time.
But they could put a one time MTX transformation into a Tiefling on sale in the store for a month after they introduce Tieflings into the game.
People that want to be a Tiefling can't sit on their hands. They will have to buy the change in a fairly short time if they want to transform an existing character. After that, they would have to roll a new toon, just like everyone that comes into the game after that time.
By limiting the transformations to just the new races it still maintains a level of meaning to that initial racial choice, too.
You can't change from whatever you are to anything else, only into the newly introduced races.
Choosing a race at launch means that you character is never going to be able to be any of the other races that were available to choose.
