Am I doing Magic Item creation right?

Homebrew and House Rules

Ok so I was looking in the books wanting to make a cool shield. Knowing that fighters have issues with ranged unless they pull out a ranged weapon or can fly (which is really expensive) I tried to add a ranged attack to a shield.

Am I right that if I want a Command word Item that dose Magic Missle at Caster Level 5 (3d4+3 damage) it would be: ( 1(Spell level) X 5(caster level) X 1800 ) Devided by (5/2) for two times a day? Thats fairly cheep for a solid spell. And This can be added to a shield that is magical without a cost increase (as in the cost of the shield before this enchat dose not affect the cost of the enchant)

or did I do it wrong? Cus shields like this would be fun :)

Well, if an average of 9 ranged damage twice per day is worth 3600GP to you, then, yes, this should be ok.
Alternatively, you could get quickdraw and some throwing knifes or javelins too. This would allow you to full attack from the second round (or the first, if you're willing to drop your melee weapon.)
And since throwing weapins are not destroyed, you can just collect them after the fight and do this all day long. This would probably give you more average damage at the point where you have the money to invest 3600 gp in something as situational as this shield.

I Like the flavor though, could understand if you'd get it anyway.

Have you thought about adding an effect that would bring the flyer down to the fighter? Some effect that emulated a tanglefoot bag would work perfectly, for winged flyers, which should be the majority of the flyers you'll meet.

You missed one part. Anytime you add a effect that is different from the magic already on the item you multiply the cost by 1.5. So the cost would be $5400.

But I agree with other posters. It is probably more worth the money the make something that brings you to the ranged person or the ranged person to you.

I thought the 1.5 multiplyer was for the most expensive costing part of the enchantment. Isnt it? Or is it just a flat out 1.5x for any additional affects. Say +1 shield with the magic missles vs a +5 shield with the magic missles.

I think my fighters will simply stick to the mighty composite bows they keep in reserve.

The 50% increase in price is only for body slot items, which I don't think a shield counts as (correct me if I am wrong please)

If the item is one that occupies a specific place on a character's body, the cost of adding any additional ability to that item increases by 50%. For example, if a character adds the power to confer invisibility to her ring of protection +2, the cost of adding this ability is the same as for creating a ring of invisibility multiplied by 1.5.

They give an example of adding an enchantment to a weapon in the same section that adding the second enchantment is not increased by 50%

The cost to add additional abilities to an item is the same as if the item was not magical, less the value of the original item. Thus, a +1 longsword can be made into a +2 vorpal longsword, with the cost to create it being equal to that of a +2 vorpal sword minus the cost of a +1 longsword.

it is for any effect that isn't part of the original. So the magic missiles of a +1 or +5 weapon is the same.
