Scarab Sages

So, I was trying to come up with ideas for a Pathfinder campaign, and there were some elements that I wanted to use, and this was what I wanted to come up with. Tell me what you guys think or if it's stupid or whatever.

So, the campaign is set about 10 years after the 'current' campaign time. It features a new god who was a man, but used the Star Stone to ascend. He is now the god of "Vigilance, Resolve, and protection from corruption." (he is LN.) After ascending, he has began a vehement recruitment effort and has, in a mere ten years, attracted a great number of followers (Knights, and Inquisitors, mostly.) This new god concerns himself almost single-mindedly with stopping the mechanations of the dark tapastry, ferverently and often to the point of obsession. His knights have been known to put people to the sword with only the slightest evidence or dealings with the dark tapastry, or only tangential relationships with them (it is said that they once torched an entire villiage because a gibbering mouther showed up in it.

Now, there is a group of people that are trying to stop them, mostly just to prevent all rampant, poorly-explained killing, but here's the kick. Secretly there is a third group that is trying to open up the dark tapastry, but not for the reason you think.

See, this third group has, in essence, discovered the secrets to the role-playing side of levels. They have discovered that they are more powerful, stronger, faster, smarter, than most 'mortal' beings. They can take a dragon's fire breath to the face and survive, or cut themselves out of the belly of a purple worm, or survive getting chomped on by a T-Rex, things that 'mortals' shouldn't be able to do. So they want to test their limits, see if they can't become more-than-mortal by breaking through the barrier of what mortals can do (in game terms they are trying to achieve level 21 and beyond.) Problem is, they can't find a decent fight to get enough xp to level (or, as they would put it, you only get stronger if you face more and more challenging foes.) So they are trying to unleash the horrors of the dark tapastry as sort of a 'final exam' to become truly epic.

And, of course, the PCs get swept up in this web of intrigue. Do they side with the crazy religious zelots who will kill anyone they see as a threat, or will they side with their enemies? And what happens when they find out about the third group?

Sounds great to me!It gives good opportunities for a plot twist and it's great that they have a truely dificult choise. Try to make sure they don't get in a fight with the strongest parts of either side on lower levels. They either die or it's unrealistic. Good job!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Nice job with the idea, I'd play it. I am usually just a character I've Dm'd once and I killed most of my players(the only one I didn't kill fled). Bad choice for me. But I have a suggestion: Try to say many different things to them, important info without giving it to them. Try to make them think of asking someone something or going somewhere to find this info(in your case maybe a temple to learn more). Roleplaying is awesome, it shouldn't just be fighting. Well, good luck:)
