Witches get putrefy food and water but not purify?

Scarab Sages

What's the rationale behind this? They can cast cure spells as well as inflict spells. Curious as to why this (admittedly very minor) decision was made. Is it because all witches are supposed to be eeeevvviiiil and gross even if they actually aren't?

I guess it was just to give them a different feel.
Perhaps with the rationale that in most parties the witch will not be the only caster, so it doesn't matter if the don't get that one spell.

But I missed it, too when I picked my cantrips.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Probably it has to do with the common superstition that witches cause milk to curdle when they are nearby (so in a way, yes, it kind of has to do with preconceptions of witches, but also plays on an existing bit of folklore).

But why they can't also purify stuff I don't know either. Probably for the same reason clerics can't cast cat's grace...

That, I believe, is because their Reflex is their bad save.

Scarab Sages

Nice tie in to the curdling milk superstition, I hadn't thought of that.

Doesn't fit at all with the character I'm making though. So many things (hexes mainly) for the witch appear to be tied to folklore and abilities that fit for an NPC but are lacklustre to terrible for PCs.

Because witch are evil?

Which IMO is why they SHOULD get cat's grace... it's a design logic I don't understand.

If it's a home game, you could ask your GM if you could either swap another spell for purify food and drink or research the spell in game.

And I agree, it's one of my problems with the class. I love the idea of the class and you can have fun playing one, but many of the abilities did not seem to be designed for players in mind. And while sure, you should have some cool abilities for NPCs, if a player class lacks a lot of what makes a good player class, then something's gone wonky with the design somewhere, IMO.

Aye it's for a home game, I don't imagine my GM having a problem with me just adding purify to my list. Kind of need it for their back story (marooned for a very long time on an island with no fresh water, do relied on purifying sea water).

If they do, just take the Two Worlds Magic trait.
