Hi,
I am about to start the AP with the family and only have 2 players. Instead of each person running 2 PC a piece I was wondering if I should just have them play their PC at higher level say lvl 3? Or would it be better to have one of the just run another PC?

How experienced are your players? If they can handle it, getting the total party up to four would be good. If they're fresh, bumping them a level or two wouldn't hurt. I think the biggest problem you are going to run into is that the PCs will be greatly outnumbered. They might be fighting against an appropriately rated CR encounter except they are going to get murdered by the sheer number of opponents. Good luck!

IMO you're better off with each player having one PC.

I would have the players get together and discuss what their character concepts, including background and what roles they expect to be able to cover. If you feel they have a well-rounded group then I would let them run as is (adjusting encounters per their average party level). If there is a role missing (say no front-line warrior or divine caster) then I would draft an NPC that you run. Be careful to accentuate the players and not overshadow them.

If, for example, the party is missing a front-line fighter I might put together a cavalier that fights with a sword and shield. The cavalier can ably hold the front line with his solid defense and won't outshine PCs that focus on dealing damage (since he fights with sword and shield). He has class abilities that provide buffs to the rest of the party that stack well with those provided by divine casting and bardic performance.

Thanks for the feedback!

I'm planning to run this as an online game, and I have two players. As they have shown interest in playing a Druid and a Summoner; I thought that perhaps a combination of those two classes, with summons + eidolon + animal companion, plus letting them make the PCs with point buy 25 could settle the matter...

What do you think? Could this work? Or would it still be overpowering for them?
