What deities work well for this AP?

I am going to be a PC in this adventure - and will likely be the cleric. (So, please keep this as "spoiler" free as possible.)

What dieties work well in this Adventure Path?

I was thinking Desna, but her priest's responsibility to "Help travelers in need" might create an unneeded conflict.

I believe the Skull & Shackles Player's Guide provides information on this. I would personally recommend Besmara or Gozreh.

It is actually unhelpful with this. :(

Here is what it says (see page 3).

Skull & Shackles Players Guide wrote:
Clerics, druids, and inquisitors that have some connection to the sea make a perfect fit for the Skull & Shackles Adventure Path. Details on Besmara—goddess of piracy, strife, and sea monsters—can be found in Pathfinder Adventure Path #55. Good domain choices include Charm, Liberation, Luck, Travel, Trickery, Water, and Weather, and useful subdomains include Curse, Deception, Oceans, Revolution, Storms, and Thievery. In addition, druids might be interested in the aquatic terrain domain from Ultimate Magic.

By that wording, Desna would work.

It partially depends on how flexible your GM is going to be on alignment and how 'piratey' you expect the player characters to get. Now, that said, there are a lot of Chaotic Neutral pirates, which falls in Desna's range. But the 'helping travelers in need' is going to be potentially-awkward; you might have to basically work out where the line is drawn with your GM there.

Besmara, Gozreh, Cayden Caillean and even the demon lord Dagon work well in this AP.

As does Calistria. Especially Calistria.

What everyone else said. I highly recommend Besmara though. There is a great article on her in the back of the Wormwood Mutiny that your GM should let you read. Has spells unique to her priests, along with a unique summon list, aphorisms, and other fun details that make for a rich character.

Besmara is the default primary. Dagon and Gozreh have a good place. I wanted more options for good PC's so Cayden Caillean was a natural fit. It also has been suggested that Cayden thinks Besmara is attractive even if they disagree on morals. Many of the pirates are information brokers and worship Norgorber. Because of the changes I made to accomdate more noble PCs I increased the pressure and presence of Cheliax as a threat go so far as to start floating rumors that Asmodeous is waging war on Besmara on this plane and in the outer planes as well. He is sick of her raiding and pillaging. I also started and Andoran sponsored abolishonist movement heavily favored by Sarenrae and Cayden Caillean.

Are you looking for a generally good or evil aligned deity?

Given that my original thoughts were for Desna, I would prefer to play a good aligned cleric.

So the deity may be Neutral, but not evil (so suggesting Demon Lords are kind of not helpful).

This is also the root my problem with both Besmara and Calistria, because - while CN - their philosphies lean strongly to the "dark."

Well the Cayden Cailean or Gozreh are your best bets. Cayden is Good aligned, all about swilling grog and buckling swash.

Gozreh is neutral, but considering s/he is the god of the seas and skies, makes a lot of sense for a pirate or sailor of any stripe.

I agree.

Cayden Cailean would also help with a Cleric trying to influence his party "updward" on the Algnment scale - while still working in the AP. :)

Well, Besmara's philosophy is pretty much 'cause trouble and get rich.' She's pretty flexible on how that happens, last I checked.

necroing to ask how your run went... did cayden cailean fit the AP? were there any plot hooks that tied your priest's faith to the story?

also, for everyone who's tried (or DMed the AP): how does an evil-aligned norgorber cleric fit the plot? are there conflicts with norgorberites that would make this choice challenging?

To my knowledge so far there isn't any conflicts in the main plot with norgorber.

Cayden Cailean likewise, but if you run Plunder and Peril there is some interaction with Cayden Cailean.

Besmera is the most interesting deity for this AP by far. My players had a blast visiting Besmera's throne as a sideplot during plunder and peril, which a ran along with the main plot.

double necromancy
Norgorberites may run into a conflict in part 5
or they may turn it into an advantage
