Insanity out of combat.

Advice

How do people play Insanity, the spell (an ongoing confusion effect) outside of combat?

Rolling dice to determine actions every 6 seconds out of combat makes the game unplayable from both a practical level and a fun level.

Our group faced this a few sessions ago, and the player who's PC was insane decided that, outside of combat, whenever it came time for him to actually act, he had a 50% shot at doing what he wanted, and a 50% chance of doing something he didn't want (including babbling incoherently).

We all enjoyed this a lot, and the PC seemed truly insane.

Anyone else done anything interesting with Insanity outside of combat?

There was one player in my group who would roll dice to make major decisions.

When we encountered this particular effect, we allowed the character to function relatively normal until he was under stress of any kind. The character was still twitchy and spastic, but he had enough self-control outside of combat to focus enough to at least have a conversation. In any situation where the character would not be allowed to take 10 on a skill check, though, he had to consult the table.

We just gave the player a stressor, or trigger, for the insanity. If the trigger condition occurs, the player rolled for each minute exposed to the stressor. Alternately, the player can choose to take a debilitating mental disorder instead (such as schizophrenia, deep depression, a personality disorder, etc.) and only roll the confusion effects in combat.
