Best wands for a new familiar

Advice

Hey all.

This is a PFS question, thank you

So my Wife recently leveled to 7 with her sorcerer.

She picked up a new familliar, a Lyrakien

You can see its character sheet Here

This is a PFS question, thank you

So as you can see it has a +20 UMD letting it auto use wands.

what would you say are the best 1st level wands for it to carry?

normally one would be CLW, but it can cast that 1/day as a SLA.

I'm thinking vanish as one of them, but that only lasts 1 round

This is a PFS question, thank you

Any ideas would be great. we need either utility or no save as its a CL 1 wand.

Also I suppose she could have a scroll or 2 if needed.

Thanks for the help.

True strike + hydraulic push

Also, go all the way to 30 in UMD and give him scrolls of anti-magic field. Casting AMF through share spells is debatable, the familiar doing it himself is not :)

oh we will be pushing the UMD even higher, but at 7th this was the best we could manage.

magic missle is a priceless choice for a level 1 wand, greese is effective at levels 1-20 (for disarm atleast), curelight wounds would be very very very useful, a free wandmonkey that heals every round of combat. then you have the more obscure spells like, entangle, summon monster (a great trap springer wand) and a few more utility spells like sacred shield, bless, doom, bane ect..

*edit did you make sure this familiar can use a wand? apparently they have a list of what can and can not use wands in PFS*

Sczarni

Wand of Enlarge Person
Wand of Reduce Person
Wand of Expeditious Retreat
Wand of Bless
Wand of Protection from Evil
Wand of Endure Elements

You might consider cantrips also.

These are few wands that you maybe didn't think of.

Yeah, it's a really small list but this one is on there.

if it were more open then she would be useing one of the other improved familiars... but as you say, there are not a lot that can use wands.

I am leaning in the direction of Feather step for one of the wands as DT is SUPER common in PFS.

the other will either be..

Grease
Protection from evil
Stumble gap (its not great but on a save it still does something)
Magic Missile (i do wonder if 1d4+1 is ever worth it tho...)

Shadow Lodge

its 1d4+1 auto damage every round period. with a 7th level sorcerer casting dispell magic and other spells its like adding 2d6 onto your fire ball.

i personally would choose grease over magic missle, only because its reflex to the save, and it disarms people making your fighter happy.

Liberating command would be useful if it's coming from a familiar simply for the action economy.

Also if you're dm will allow it you could get mini-staves and let the familiar use them.

You'll want to divide your list into the following:

1. Direct attack.
2. Terrain Control.
3. Buffing/support.

I would put forth obscuring mist as an option. Readied actions of this can be very nice.
Likewise entangle is nice for creating DT where the DC 11 reflex save is low enough for many to ignore, and it breaks charges outdoors.

But the question is how obvious do you want the familiar to be?

If it's using a wand of bless it might be more innocuous than say a magic missile against someone casting.

Hrm.... Really good call with obscuring mist.

I was thinking for the 2 wands, make one really good but not useful all the time, and the oter just spam away with it.

Feather Step would be the once in a while useful one.

The Sorcerer is a Verdant bloodline with all buffs and debuffs.

Here is her Spell list.

1st
Entangle
Liberating Command
Grease
Mage Armor
Vanish

2nd
Create Pit
Mirror Immage
Bears Endurance
Glitterdust

3rd
Haste
Fly

So we need a spamable something.

Grease is good but on a weapon does give a DC 11 save. at 7th level not much will miss that.

Magic Missile may be the way to go.

And I think a wand of obscuring mist may be a great other option as well.

2nd level wands are highly expensive tho, 4k+ if I remember right.

I would keep obscuring mist as scroll instead.

obscuring mist is 1st level.

you may be thinking fog cloud.

Sczarni

No it's what I said.

Obscuring mist is good to keep as scroll, you wont use it that often, I know it's 1st level spell.

2nd level wands are just highly expensive. Even at 7th levels.

ok, sorry you threw me with the mention of 2nd level wands as none of the spells we are talking about are 2nd level.

But your right a scroll or 2 should be enough for OM

Do staves scale to the user?

Sadly Staves are WAYYYYYY too expensive for this.

I have used this familiar (Fluffy) to great effect all weekend with my own wizard. I've given her a wands of cure light, magic missile, protection from evil, and silent image. I also bought two level two wands that I will now swear by: Invisibility and Scorching Ray. Her ranged touch with the SR is high enough to hit most targets and if its too high then back to the Missile. And everyone loves to be invisible now and again. I also got her a handy haversack to carry them all around in. She also saved two of my companions when she cast breath of life from a scroll after I was feeble-minded.

BTW, how did you get the +8 racial bonus to UMD? I do not see where that one came from.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

the evolved familiar feat.

gives a 1 pt evolution.

there is a 1 pt evo that gives a +8 racial to one skill.

Well depends how you want to use obscuring mist.

Likewise using wands doesn't provoke and doesn't require having the requisite ability score (which likely shouldn't an issue regardless for a level 1 scroll).

Also if you plan on using it more than once there is the juggling issue, so it depends on how you are going to use it.
