Alternative Pets

Pathfinder Society

Hello everyone,

After reading Game of Thrones, I've become infatuated with creating fighters who can train animals via the Handle Animal skill. Currently I have a riding dog named Calico who has been trained with the hunting skillset instead of the combat training skillset.

Are there opportunities to train unconventional animals in PFS? Calico has been a good pet, but it would be neat to find and rear uncommon animals. It seems like there could be many opportunities to work this concept into PFS, whether by way of a boon in a Chronicle, or a static chart showing the prices of unconventional animals and the cost to purchase them.

Thoughts?

Do you have an example of what you mean by an unconventional animal?

Unless you're playing a Beastmaster Ranger, I believe you'll have some difficulty finding a lot of wildly different animals from a legal source. With the archetype, you could get a new, 2hd pet every level. In PFS you can only use one in combat, and it's likely to be useless from about 4th level onwards in a fight. Your repertoire of animals could be AWESOME, though, as you get the druid list of companions with the Archetype, as well.

The Adventurer's Armoury has a table of roughly 20-some buyable pet animals. I will add that it has a good number with only slight variants on the previous listed animal (like "horse, light and horse", "heavy wartrained".) The only things not legal from that list are Psuedodragons (if attained mundanely) and Elephants.

Beastrider Cavalier is also an option.
