Spell Effects and Dying

Rules Questions

Chances are I am just not looking in the right spots, and I will feel dumb when I am pointed to the right source. As for the exact question; when you die, do and lasting spell effects automatically dispel? As in, can you kill a target, and then "Arcana Theft" their buffs?

My understanding is that their buffs go away; I don't think you can steal them.

I'm inclined to agree. One way to look at why is because, when somebody dies, their body is no longer considered a creature, but an object. Since most buff spells I know of can only be used on creatures, they are no longer a valid target for the buffs since they're technically an object and so the buffs would disappear.

Logic works for me. With the same logic, a dying creature would keep his/her buffs.

As I understand things, spells keep running until their timer ends, regardless of whether:

  1. the caster lives or dies
  2. the target is still a valid target
I think there's a dev ruling on both these counts.

Of course. When dying, he's still alive, so he's still a creature and the buffs keep working. He only becomes an object (and the buffs only disappear) when he actually, fully, completely, no-longer-has-a-pulse dies.

When you said that, I immediately thought of the ork feat, tenacious Survivor. Even when that ork is dead, he can still live!!
