Alright, I've not gone senile, I promise. My group just ran into a bit of a problem last night with dispel magic. Now, I know the mechanics of it. You roll, you apply the roll to all the spells on the target, in highest caster level on down. now, what if there are three spells of level 12 caster, and one of level six caster? which of the 12th level spells gets targeted first? is it random? and in the case of greater, do you hit all the 12th level spells before you start dispelling the lower level ones? two examples:

I cast dispel magic on an enemy wizard. He has mirror image, Mage armor and shield (CL 12) and Stoneskin from a wand at caster level 7. I cast targeted dispel magic at him, I roll high enough to dispel one of the 12th CL spells. Which one do i dispel? also, let's say i throw greater dispel (CL 12) so I can dispel three spells on him, targeted. Which spells do i dispel? one of the CL 12s and the CL 6? all the 12s? if he had four CL 12 spells, which ones would be dispelled? I feel like i'm missing something here.

There is nothing mentioned about equal caster levels. I think randomly, to keep it fair.

With Greater dispel magic you first dispel the highes level spells. So if there are 3 CL12 spell you dispel those three first.

If you have 4 CL12 spell nothing in the book, so randomly again?

Discuss this with your player or dicide what is fair.

alright, i'd say the only time you'd get to pick is if you had something like greater arcane sight on, and could see exactly what spells he had running on him. maybe. random sounds good though.

If you picked the creature to dispel, then it would be random. If you picked a particular spell, it tries that one first, and goes down the list on the creature (randomly for ties).

I usually find that using a dispel to attack ITEMS is much more fun....shut down the BBG's weapon, armor, cloak, etc. It is a very safe bet that they will be magical. It is usually easier to shut those items down also as they have low caster levels (as opposed to attacking the casters actual SPELLS).
