Animals and Survival

Rules Questions

The one and only skill I was sure animals had as a class skill was survival. However, it seems that I was quite wrong. Animals apparently spend more time jumping than feeding themselves.

Please fix this.

Would you look at that!?

Surprising.

However, most animals have a positive, or at least a not negative modifier to Wisdom, which means that they should be able to take 10 on Survival and look after themselves with absolutely no ranks anyway, whereas Perception and Stealth are generally opposed rolls, and Acrobatics, Climb, and Swim usually have DCs just a bit too high to reach without being trained in them; still...that is a bit odd.

Yes, but have you ever tried to make an animal with the Scent ability track something? It doesn't work unless you roll very well.

Silver Crusade

I did find this frustrating for my druid as well (also trying to get an animal with scent to track). If you're playing a home game, it would be perfectly reasonable to add survival to their class skill list.

For hunting animals, my guess on the reasoning is that hunting is very focused on sneaking up on your prey (stealth) and taking it down quickly (which would just be attacks). However since that's the class skill list for *all* animals, including foraging herbavores, it doesn't make much sense.

Grand Lodge

Animal Companions with 3 intelligence or higher, could take the additional traits feat, and choose a trait to grant them survival as a class skill.
