Conchobar... I find it astounding he even made it this far^^ I have the nagging suspicion he is one of the most killed/maimed/exiled "friendly" NPCs in the first installment.

Does anyone ever pick him over Rosie ?

LOL!

In my campaign he's the one NPC none of my players have even tried to win over yet, even though Rosie is Helpful and the subtle hints about probable mutual attraction there have been dropped left and right.

That may change in the near future, as even my gang have figured out that Things Are Coming To A Head shortly, and they'll need all the friends they can get. We shall see.

Perhaps it's some enormous anti-Gnome conspiracy, or something? I'll bet the Illuminati are involved somehow.....

lol, my guys had Conchobar left on a tiny atoll (another long story of theft gone wrong), with a low chance of them ever returning for him, and had since have Rosie fall in love with the groups' berzerk Dwarf (due to Patch meanly applying Conchobar's philtre of love). A liason made in hell

Such are the chances of ...Love^^. Mutiny beckons on the weekend, and I think the "loveboat" episodes will be over after that

Down they go :

The players both stormed the "Promise" last session and started on the actual mutiny, which led to a mean character death by sealife. For now.

Who : Owlbear (on very friendly terms)

Cause of Death : a multiplicity of "1" rolls and two crits by sharks

Owlbear, being one of the firsts to act and board the "Man's Promise", grabbed a rope, intending to swing over... and the first "1" was rolled by a player "rolling for the friendly". This was followed by a "1" on the reflex save to grab and hold on to something before dropping into the shark infested waters. Splash, the Owl was now "subsurface"

The dice passed on... and somebody shouted "does anyone see the sharks ?" Owlbear rolling another "1" (next player) for swimming... swiftly followed by a shark charging into him with a confirmed crit for 16 points of damage.

On the following round Owlbear mightily paddled for the surface, with a "13" indicating his possible survival....(yeah, new player rolling !) but before a rope could be thrown this was quickly followed by the next shark charging into him with another confirmed crit for 14, and the initial shark biting for a lame 6 more points, which unfortunately was enough.

That were about 7 rolls on different D20s, 3 of which came up "1" and two "20s" for the sharks' crits.

Tempest Rising - 3 of 6

Spoiler:
Wreck of the Brine Banshee. We made it all the way to the lower parts of the submerged wreck only to have the Ranger/Barbarian (armed with the magic trident Zul) get dominated by the Aboleth and then the Orc Blooded Sorcerer was dominated next (even with the help of two hero points) and they proceeded to lay waste to the other two party members with Lightning bolts and Zul. The Sorc's position was such that he inadvertently hit aboleth behind the illusionary wall twice almost killing it. The last surviving member, a druid escaped with the ship to fight another day.

Race: Human
Class/Level: Priest Lvl.7
Location: Wreck of the Brine Banshee
Cause of Death: Stabbed by dominated PC with Zul.

Race: Oread
Class/Level: Ranger (Freebooter)/Barbarian Lvl.5/2
Location: Wreck of the Brine Banshee
Cause of Death: Not dead but a slave to a dominate spell

Race: Human
Class/Level: Zen Archer Lvl.7
Location: Wreck of the Brine Banshee
Cause of Death: Dominated Sorcerer PC and 2 Lightning Bolts and 2 volleys of magic missiles.

Race: Half Orc
Class/Level: Orc Blooded Sorcerer Lvl.7
Location: Wreck of the Brine Banshee
Cause of Death: Not dead but a slave to a dominate spell

Total Losses this campaign: 8 and 3 of them are from one player. This is getting as bad as Kingmaker where by the 4th part we had 12 deaths with one player dieing 2x in one session.

Replacement characters:

Human Alchemist
Nagaji Druid(Naga Aspirant)
Half Orc Fighter/Rogue(skulking Slayer)
Human Sea Witch

Beautiful, Xaod, just beautiful. I look forward to many glorious character deaths as a player in Skull & Shackles.

Neither of these deaths actually played out as deaths. If they were more heavily PC-sponsored, they may have but in both cases I was the one at fault to some extent. I didn't have to retcon anything or fudge dice that had already been rolled but I did have to do some on-the-fly mental adjustments. (Spoiler tags to abbreviate the post for those who would rather be spared the context.)

Wormwood Mutiny
Day 2
Bloody Hour
Would be cause of death for monk: The Sweatbox.

Spoiler:
Davor the 1/2-Orc monk swab gallantly interposes his own back to receive rope bashes intended for Razmira, our Suli sorceress cook's mate. (The cook's mate failed supper on Day 1 by way more than 4, resulting in a spiteful, grumbling press-ganged crew. Fishguts was soused. So far, he has only been sober about 25% of the time.)

Once it was explained to the sucker-for-punishment half-orc that the cook's mate had to receive her discipline, he stubbornly held his ground between her and Scourge. So he was sentenced to 24hrs in the sweatbox for insubordination.

In he goes. No restful healing for him. When he is released at the next bloody hour, I search for the entry detailing the effects of the sweatbox. d4 non-lethal per hour. 24d4 at lvl 1!? Fort DC 15 each hour to avoid the damage, +1 DC for each consecutive hour. So DC ranges from 15 to 38.

Poker face time. It was nowhere near my intent to have the character die right away, nor was it Mr Plugg's yet. But it had to be made clear they would brook no insubordination. So I went with 2d4 non-lethal + mandatory fatigue all the next day, stressing the soreness and hunger that was building all the previous day, night and throughout Day 3.

Even with that, thanks to unhealed damage from before (rigger climb test, I think, plus damage taken during the Laying Down the Law encounter), he was unconscious and dying when they hauled him out of the sweatbox. They were about to toss him unceremoniously overboard when Sandara succeeded a passing heal check to note he was actually still alive. She called a halt to the proceedings, stabilized and healed him. The close call was felt.

Wormwood Mutiny
Day 4: Something in the Bilges.
Would-be cause of death for the whole party: Rat pack+

Spoiler:
This would likely have been a TPK solely due to consistently foul dice.
Plus, I made the encounter tougher in 2 respects:

1) This was already the 3rd time someone ends up in the bilges and we hadn't seen a bilge spider yet. So I rolled the percentile dice even though there already was an encounter set up. Sure enough this time I rolled under 25%. So add a bilge spider to the rats.

2) I had enlarged and printed off the ship map to use for encounters. A player asked how deep the bilge water was and if it counted as hindering terrain for the purposes of taking a 5' step. After the fact I see that the text says "1-2 feet of dark, brackish water" but I failed my perception check by more than 4 to notice that on a quick scan. So I winged it and responded something along the lines of about thigh deep (shoulder/neck deep for the halfling)and yes, the squares showing bilge water would prevent 5' step. Nothing like a fight at lvl 1 to introduce complications.

Before the rats show up, a bilge spider drops on the monk. It missed its attack and gets swat into the drink. This triggers a frothing of activity as the rats pounce on the spider and the party. I did not play the rats "to the death" as per morale. Instead I played them "ravenous". So in a sense, the bilge spider made things easier by being valuable cannon fodder for the PCs.

Things then turned sour fast: The 1/2ling rogue fails the acrobatics check to negate AoO to bypass the rats to a flanking position. At least 2 rats hit, 1 of them critting. Down goes the rogue before he can sneak attack. The cavalier, monk and sorceress are hard-pressed to fell rats before they completely devour the 1/2ling to -Con. In the process, most of the rats are slain before the cavalier and monk also fall. It is up to the sorceress to chase the remain rats off of her fellow press-ganged pirates.

Stormborn bloodline Suli sorceress - spells exhausted, Elemental Assault Exhausted. Down to 1 Thunderstaff. She had been buffing others to that point. Thunderstaff is a standard action that only lasts 1 round. As written, she could not use it herself yet (at least until the duration increases). Given her low damage potential and really not wanting a TPK on Day 4, allowed that it would last her next standard action. That did the trick. It was that close.

Yeah, call me soft. I do allow PC deaths but neither of these were really poor decisions on their part so I couldn't bring myself to allow it.

On Day 11 now. Next up: reefclaws!

Name: Ji'an Nethair
Race: Suli
Class: Rogue
Level: 4
Cause of Death:

Spoiler:
The Captain of Ghost Ship managed to grapple her with his trident and she barely escaped him with her life before running into his hoard of undead.

Name: Okrin Wywier
Race: Aasimar (Normal, did not take an alternate bloodtype)
Class: Stormborn Sorcerer
Level: 4
Cause of Death:

Spoiler:
After mourning the loss of Ji'an, the next morning the crew of the Free Joker spotted a vessel and decided to take out their anger on the pour vessel. As soon as they boarder they discover their mistakes as the caged manticore was released. The fight was fought hard, but the party who was now one striker short fell, resulting in the TPK.

Tonight we start again with new characters, right before the fight that fell Okrin.

Name/Race: Tallcock/Human
Class/Level: Alchemist/Barbarian Lvl.8
Location: Isle of Empty Eyes. Location G1/Ruins of Sumitha
Cause of Death: 2 critical hits from Cyclops guards.

The party discovered and avoided the net trap, they disarmed it and decided to walk around it. The guards watching this had time to get the hunters next door and they all came attacking from the ruins at once. Tallcock was the only party member they could reach and the used their future sight and confirmed 2 critical's, knocking him to kingdom come. It was a tough fight but the party was able to take the rest of the Cyclops down.

This player has not played every session so while the rest of the group is level 10 he is level 8. The party has 3 x lvl 10's, 1 x lvl 9, and 1 x lvl 8.

Uggug, Orc Fighter lv1.

Couldn't hold his liquor and perished in a game of heave, all for 60gp.

Name: Cap'n Nico
Cause of Death: Made it blatantly obvious he was a threat to Scourge and Plugg and made other enemies aboard the Wormwood. After changing over to the Man's Promise, Plugg got everyone into a routine of getting their nightly meal late, late at night and eating alone in their rooms. Nico failed the perception check (with a bonus!) to notice the Oil of Taggit slipped into his food just as it had been slipped into his drink back in the pre-game. Failed the fortitude save to resist, knocked unconscious, and was coup de graced a few hours later. Failed yet another fort save, instantly killed and was dumped overboard.

Killed in the common crew storage area - with hammocks swinging left and right ? By food prepared via Kroop and the Cook's Mate ?...... No-one noticing him lying about ready for a CdG ?

sounds pretty arbitrary to me...... well, your game, your call

Proto-Type wrote:

...they don't have private rooms. Theres a common crew berth that all of the non-officers sleep in. Plugg's got some skill killing him there!

Name/Race: Smiley/Human
Class/Level: Red Mantis Assassin/Rogue/Fighter Lvl.10
Location: isle of Empty Eyes/Ruins of Sumitha/ Room G17
Cause of Death: Beat to Death by Isthreth, the great Ccclops king.

Nothing exciting, he tried to get into a snake attack position, Isthreth didn't like someone behind him and pumelled him with 3 club hits that beat him to a bloody pulp. The party leveraged Vailea to get him raised.

Crustypeanut wrote:
...they don't have private rooms.

The PCs made a big deal out of having their own quarters on the Wormwood. Seeing as how the Man's Promise would be theirs for some time, and was a merchant vessel anyway, I saw no harm in changing the layout slightly to make the PCs feel better about making it their own.

Other PCs did respond to the muffled noises, and there were plenty of opportunities for the plan to have been discovered or stopped along the way. I feel guilty about killing a PC that early in the game but definitely don't feel the circumstances were unfair.
The upcoming trap in the grindylow cave, on the other hand.... =(

On behalf of our GM:

Name/Race Targar (not sure of the spelling)
Class/Level Summoner (synthesist) 3
Adventure Wormwood Mutiny
Location grindilow lair, devilfish's room
Cause of Death Devilfish powerglompage

The Gory Details: Targar bravely lept into the water to melee the devilfish guarding the grindilow-sized crawlway leading into Mamma Grindilow and Big Grindilow Junior's lair. Sadly, he was promptly tentacled, constricted and devoured, "power armor" and all, by the devilfish.

Name/Race: Krassimir / Elf
Class/Level: Wizard / 1
Adventure: Wormwood Mutiny
Location: Main Deck
Cause of Death: Mutiny. Losing initiative to pirate scum.

The Gory Details: Krass had been having a hard time of it--forgot his chore & had been tied to the mast, had to hide to prevent loosing his shoes to bullies, etc. In any event Kreztin the Cook had convinced Master Scrouge to harpoon one of sharks eating the keelhauled victems body--the plan was shark fine soup for dinner! In an effor to win back the respect of the crew Krassimir volunteered to throw the Harpoon at the shark. Instead, he turned and attempted to kill Master Scourge! Kreztin cast mage shield to protect Scrouge who won inititive & struck Krassimir down.

S&S Rule #2, "know when to mutiny"

Character: Kella, Merfolk Druid 3
Adventure: Wormwood Mutiny
Cause of Death: Initiated combat against the dreaded Devilfish by casting non-defensively. The opportunity attack crit and the barbed tentacles ripped her to shreds instantly.

Silver Crusade

I don't know if all of these count exactly, as each one was later resurrected (one through Breath of Life the next round).

Philander, Gnome Summoner 12, died during The Price of Infamy.

Spoiler:
Fled from the battle with Harrigan due to a poor will save from his Howling armor. Came back two rounds later using dimension door, separated from his eidolon to let it jump into melee. Was intimidated by Harrigan two rounds later, stepped 10 feet away to shoot him with a musket. Harrigan takes a 5 foot step and hacks him to pieces with full-attack hasted sneak attacks.

Tatiana, Tengu Rogue(pirate)8/Inner Sea Pirate 5, died during From Hell's Heart.

Spoiler:
Won initiative and decided to swing, invisible, into the swarm of enemies, making a sneak attack on Valeria, and so becoming visible again. Druvalia crits with her pistol, doing enough damage to knock her out via Massive Damage. Before the rest of the crew can board, Valeria finishes her off with a Coup de Grace.

Aria, Human Ranger (freebooter)13, died during From Hell's Heart, same battle as Tatiana.

Spoiler:
Initially took some damage from the marines' muskets, and next round fell to a barrage of shots of Druvalia's Human Bane Pepperbox. Brought back from a Breath of Life spell, tagged Druvalia for the rest of the team to fight and hid for the rest of the battle.

Here's my former character with his Obituary

Name/Race:Aedric/Sylph
Class/Level: Alchemist /2
Adventure: Wormwood Mutiny
Location: Skullwrack Isle (I think?)

Reason: Botflies, botflies everywhere

Spoiler:
The Alchemist and Rogue spotted disembodied heads in the fields, and we decided that going into the field for whatever loot it could hold was not in our best interests. So instead, we decided to burn the field to destroy whatever abominations it might hold. The GM decided that this did little more than piss off all of the botflies, which he said were about 8 swarms worth, although I have little understanding how one could tell how many things would make a swarmsworth. While the party fled, me and the GM discussed some logical things that weren't necessarily in the rule book, about how Tiny flying things would interact with the Breeze-Kissed Racial Feature. Overestimating my ability to destroy and survive, Aedric decides to stand his ground, giving the other PCs a chance to run, while he fended off the swarms. With a minimum of 9 damage on a splash I expected him to do well, which turned out not to be the case, causing him to be eaten and infested by botflies.

Following events has resulted in 2 near tpks, where the GM decided to introduce the thing from Men in Black on the remaining party while I finished rerolling and designing my replacement in the background, and later when the GM refused to introduce my Fighter into play until everyone was near dead because stubborn people behind the GM screen and at the table.

Rest in Besmara's arms Dorje, atheistic monk of the sea. You were cut down by murder most foul just before the relative safety of second level. Not to worry, you will be avenged!!

Name: Dorje
Race: Human
Class: Zen Archer (Poor fellow never got to fire an arrow in the game)
Level: 1
Adventure: Wormwood Mutiny
Location: Wormwood
Cause of death: Throat cut in the bilges by an unhinged murderer

Poor Conchobar - again. Poor lil' guy just can't seem to catch a break. ;D

My players just finished the Mutiny. They made Conchobar walk the plank. He and our Halfling bard got into it on night one when Conchobar stole the halfling's wig! No one ever liked him.

A first for me as GM - a character death during a random encounter!

Name: Ambrose Kroop (a player took over this PC after her first character's death. She decided Ambrose was secretly an alchemist.)
Class: Alchemist, level 6
Adventure: Raiders of the Fever Sea
Situation: The crew decided to go looking for trouble on the high seas and encountered a Marid! (CR 9... I rolled really high on the encounter table). The Marid distracted the party with the illusion of a dragon, gauging each of their strengths. He decided to sneak up on the alchemist. Ambrose survived the Marid's first assault but fell on the second, to a crit from the genie's trident.

I've killed more than my share on randoms. Killed 3 in one encounter with 2 Gugs in RA. Not sure how you go from rogue to alchemist, but ok. In my current games S&S is the only one w/o a player death thus far. I guess I have been too nice! I think a Marid would TPK my current party as they are still 4th level.

Name/Race n' Class:
Nylah/Elven Witch, 3
Location: Bonewrack Isle
Cause of Death: Strangled into an Undead

How She Ate it:

Poor Witch contracted ghoul fever earlier on the island, but the party was taking it easy, thinking this island was a paradise, minus the bugs. after a session of picking coconuts on the beach, and getting some minor leg damage from a Crab's claw, Our little Nylah wanted into the Castaway's stockade first, and after a successful critical hit on the vine choker's attack of opportunity, she was strangled into submission.

During the encounter we almost lost two other party members, but the captain happened to have a potion of invisibility and managed to take Nylah's Amulet of natural armor and bracers of armor, before healing the summoner back to health, and dragging the fighter to safety.

Replacement character: Probably an aquatic druid hermit that lived in a cave on Bonewrack all along.

Well, time to add them up. Joined a group part way through the AP, we were all level 5.

Alfred Barvy the Blood-drinker, Human Magus 5th level. Went invisible during combat, GM got a crit, slipped over the side and perished.

replacement character - Sayon Benne, Half Elf Fighter 2/Rogue 4. Managed to make a single level, then died to

spoiler:
the Canopy Creeper, after freeing the rest of teh PCs from their doom
.

replacement character - Shao Fa Quan, gnome cleric 3/wizard 3. Picked up where the last one left off, died

spoiler:
fighting the sahugen chief in the caves under Mancatcher Cove

GM finally gave me a token to ignore death once, as I'm the only one who's lost a character in this AP thus far, or to ressurect my first character. I ressurected my first character, now to see if I can get a single character past 6 sessions...

My nomination for quickest character death in S&S, perhaps in any AP. My fighter, Jericho, a brutally strong and headstrong young falcata specialist, took offense to being press-ganged and went after Scourge with his fists right after waking up. Scourge summoned help, and Jericho criticaled one of the pirates with his first punch, cracking his skull and killing him instantly. He didn't mean to kill him, just didn't know his own Strength. Plugg and Scourge then had him beaten unconscious and tossed overboard to drown for breaking the pirate's code against killing shipmates (or at least against getting caught doing it), and as an example to prevent further disobedience.

Enter the calmer and wiser Bron, my Inquisitor back-up character. Literally 20 minutes into the campaign and I was on my second character. I'll never let Tom tell me I'm a brutal DM ever again! I did kill one of his characters once on the first night of a campaign (separated from the party and tried to flee beast cultists on foot on his own, bad mistake) but never in the first half hour!

On behalf of our GM:

Name/Race Targar (not sure of the spelling)
Class/Level Summoner (synthesist) 5
Adventure Chapter 2
Location poop creek
Cause of Death lack of a paddle

The Gory Details: After the last session, we had brought down a harpy and driven off another. A lone harpy archer found us rowing back along poop creek after a certain old man's map proved to be a red herring. While the harpy was wounded, Torgar was a very unfortunate recipient of a critical arrow, stabilizing at -4 hp. While his allies attempted to bring down the harpy archer, her fortitude was sufficient to resist a blindness spell before she could carry off the SPFR to the harpy nest. There he was eaten alive as the centerpiece of a feast.

On behalf of our GM:

Name/Race Bloodclaw
Class/Level Bard (arcane duelist) 5
Adventure Chapter 2
Location pit fight in Port Peril
Cause of Death overconfidence

The Gory Details: Eager to earn coin and prove her mettle, Bloodclaw chose to engage a"four-armed fiendish gorilla", taking 2:1 odds in her favor to emerge victorious. Despite taking full advantage of 5 rounds of invisibility via vanish to slather on the buffs while the 2 INT monstrosity stalked her about the pit floor by sound and scent. Too late Bloodclaw realized the peril she was in when the beast proved to be highly resistant to her blade. She did not last long against four claws and a rend that dealt her 33 hp putting her at exactly 0 hp. Firing off another vanish to save her miserable furry hide, a single claw guided by scent tore her belly open through the concealment amidst the boos and hisses of the crowd. A half minute later, her unconscious body decloaked and the monster drew and quartered her on the spot, much to the feral delight of the howling pirates crowding the stands about the pit.

First death, 4 sessions in, though he was kinda asking for it:

Name/Race Areous Zamarel(?), Human
Class/Level Bard Arcane duelist 2
Adventure Chapter 1
Location Out at sea, post-climax of the Man's Promise boarding
Cause of Death Treasure
The Gory Details: So, the party just finished up the fight against the officer of the Man's Promise. The fight was a little altered,

Spoiler:
I gave her Fogcutting Lenses, since the reach on her boarding pike would be useless without being able to see anyone, and they had been tearing though the enemy crew, so I figured they could handle a challenge
but to summarize, she and two sailors had escaped in the starboard rowboat, but the party was right behind them in the other rowboat. In her description, I mention "fine clothing and almost crystalline goggles, suggesting a person of high status." The Bard, probably the most experienced player in the group, immediately noticed both this, and the fact that she was taking reach AoOs through the fog, and put 2 and 2 together. So, out on the rowboats, she puts up a hell of a fight, get 2 or 3 crit threats, drops the monk to 0, get bull rushed right into the mouth of a shark and still gets back up, and ends up with her and the sea witch in one boat, and the rest of the party in the other (the two boats are adjacent). The witch decides that she'll bull rush her off with her hair, since she had the prehensile hair hex active, and there had been 3 successful bull rushes to dump people in the water by this point, including one against the witch herself. She rushes, officer misses her AoO, and it's the shark's turn, who's been swimming around the boat for the last few rounds.

I roll the shark's attack, it hits (she had 1 hp before the hit). Does enough to knock her uncon and dying, so I say the shark bites off the top half of her and swims off. The Bard immediately says things along the line of "No, I want those goggles". The goggles, being worth over 8000 G, are way out of their WBL, so I was aiming to make sure they didn't end up in the hands of the party. The sea witch says she wants to make a wild empathy check, I tell her it doesn't work like that, since it only works like diplo checks to improve attitude, not make requests. The bard decides he's rowing after the shark, and he's getting those goggles. I look at the speed of the shark (60 ft) and the speed the boats have been going (30 ft), and say, yeah, sorry pal, you're not catching up to the shark. He replies, "Fine, I get out and I swim." Well, now you're catching up even slower. "No, it's coming towards me. I'm at 5 HP, it can smell the blood in the water." I'm a little confused by this point, so I just sorta go "okaaay," before telling him, the shark turns around and is now swimming at him. He rolls and attack, deal 7ish damage, out of the shark's 24, before I roll for the shark. Guess what?

Natural F'ing 20.

Could not have timed it better. Roll again, of course it confirms. I just sorta go "Oh no" (He going "Aw yeah" and laughing at this point) and roll how much he takes. Ends up doing 18 damage, which is enough to take him straight to dead. The rest of the party basically saw the shark breach, and then swallow him whole.

Aftermath He was excited, and enjoyed his char's death, so that's fine. The rest of the party split up what would have been his share among themselves, and he's rolled up a NE Hobgoblin Barbarian/rogue, so it's going to fun next Saturday. Maybe I'll have another fun story to tell!

Name/Race Zach / Tengu
Class/Level Alchemist 6
Adventure Raiders of the Fever Sea
Location Sahuagin throne room
Cause of Death Zul
The Gory Details: The party went up a slope looking for air instead of the way they came in to rest and instead ended up in the "boss" encounter. After having been through several combats, resources were not available to deal with the leader of the fish-people.

Name/Race Mirron / Elf
Class/Level Ranger 6
Adventure Raiders of the Fever Sea
Location Sahuagin throne room
Cause of Death Same as above
The Gory Details: Same as above.

The party has breezed through most encounters until the last part of Raiders of the Fever Sea. The Canopy Creeper was scary for them. Then the dungeon they were going well, but knew they were depleted on resources and should have taken the sure way to rest instead of hoping their salvation was just around the next corner. Hindsight is 20/20.

The other two PCs barely escaped. On a ship, the party was very tight. In a nasty fight underwater, they left a lot to be desired. The alchemist was almost useless in the dungeon. The Ranger was a new addition and didn't take advice that a "longbow" ranger would probably not be a good fit.

Shadow Lodge

Name/Race: Nijoo Jooricki (Joojoo) Calhoun / Halfling
Class/Level: Bard 11
Adventure: Island of Empty Eyes
Location: Aboard the Wavecrest during the Eel's grand finale
Cause of Death: Nereid poison + massive trauma.
The Gory Details: In addition to the Eel blowing up Pirate Lord flagships all night, an unfortunately timed encounter with the vengeful (long story) Nereid Sefina went sideways when she nearly drowned Captain Scrappy Jack with her kiss and then blew poison in poor Joo Joo's face while they were both beguiled. She then piloted the Wavecrest (which they were all aboard) into a bone-crunching collision with the docked Come What May. The resulting collision damage overwhelmed wee Joo Joo's shriveled constitution and he expired, undone by a woman.

Name/Race: Shin ; Vudran Beastshape Tiefling
Class/Level: Oracle 4 Sky
Adventure: Raiders of the Fever Sea
Location: Quarterdeck of the Surprise, formerly the "Man's Promise"
Cause of Death:Sahuagin Disembowlment
The Gory Details: The Sahuagin (Deep One) attack proceed as (the GM) had planned, reinforced by a 4th level Oracle of the Void (5 player group), with one troop of three climbing onto the quarterdeck.
The players soundly asleep in their hammocks, the nightwatch half-asleep on their posts in a dead calm noted nothing, until the shouting started. Sandara and two pirates got attaked at the steering wheel and while not overwhelmed at once fought a loosing battle.
Shin, rising very quickly from being asleep outside on a coil of ropes, drew her rapier and acrobated (dashingly) into the middle of the Sahuagin troop. Hit - as usual - nothing much for really no damage. Suffered a critical for 20+ points and tried to retreat from the tangle.
Betrayed by her D20, she did not make it, and suffered two rounds of full Sahuagin claws and bites for a whopping 19 points with the poor Oracle only having 24 HP to start with.

The Sahuagin overwhelmed the afterguard, started snacking on the Orcale's corpse e.g. her liver, raising the delicacy in triumph (used to intimidate for the win), then fled as the remaining players assaulted the quarterdeck, taking along Shin and two slain crew "for snacks" (and the gold rings etc ). They actually had to rely on the specialists in the crew to bail them out without further player loss

Player both forgot about flanking (boni), generally low Pirate AC and being basically the weak child of the gang.

Also players were weakened (spells/(Su) low etc, HP were all up) from a battle with a galley dring the day, and had decided to party to commemorate the victory over the galley.

They did horrible things to Plugg and Scourge (And Conchobhar) for it. Horribbbblllle things.

Scourge got whipped until unconciousness, healed, whipped again, healed, then had his gold teeth ripped out while he was concious. They then tied him up and dunked him in the ocean for a few minutes at a time, then brought him back up for a quick breath and sent him down under. They did this until he finally died. May have scraped him along the coral reef a teensy bit too.

Most of Conchobhar's punishment was during the mutiny itself. First he was put to sleep by the Witch. Then, the same Fighter who ripped out Scourge's teeth went over and ripped off both of Conchobhar's ears, waking him up. He then beat him to 2 hp, at which time Conchobhar had finished screaming in pain from the ears and instead begged for mercy. He was given such. Later, they disabled his voice box and tied him to the front of the ship to serve as their figurehead. He was there for days until they finally let him loose into the water as they were nearing Rickety's. Before that, though, they shoved his Flaming Sword Cane (I added that) into his Parrot Familiar (Added that, he was a Sea Singer Bard) and roasted it from the inside and ate it. The Fighter did that, as well.

Plugg got the worst of it. They took one of his ears, poked out one of his eyes, cut his tongue so he had a permanent lisp, permanently damaged his leg's tendons so he had to hobble around, cut off his fingers at the first knuckle, and tattoo'd the name "Captain Plugg" on the back of his head. They did this while he was alive and concious. He was then assigned as the ship's Runner, so he would be constantly moving around and in pain. They like to parade him around when telling their tale in port.. might come back to bite them in the ass.

Needless to say.. it was hilarious.

WOW Plugg may only be rumored to Harrigan's son but in your campaign I am sure your DM added a positive paternity test.

We lost our first.
Kaboo Inres Varana Monk/Inquisitor from the Ramapore Isles.

Kaboo hates slavers like the Rakshasa Lords of Ramapore. So he disliked being pressganged. Easily beaten unconscious 7-8 times. Once before he spoke up for Tilly and got beaten. This time he objected to one of the other ladies Sayah the party sorc spending another day in the bilges. Plugg was sending the weakest physically into the bilges just to beat them later. Kaboo spoke up he was promptly sent to the bilges. It was still a couple days shy of the fight in the bilges but I figured a monk would do fine he has flurry after all. He knew when he was searched for weapons that it would go poorly. When he went down and found Jaundice Jape and Fipps Chumlet he knew it was bad. I gave the clubs not daggers. I figured it would be more believable if there was an investigation. Jape got knocked out but Kaboo was knocked out by Fipps who beat him to death and then dropped crates on him.

I was the DM. ;)

Paterinty test positive. Those poor pirates.

I replaced a significant portion of Raiders of the Fever Sea with the Pathfinder module "From Shore to Sea." We've just completed it and I have to say the module was a blast. Anyway, near the end we had two PC deaths. Technically this isn't a Skulls and Shackles obituary, so I'll spoiler tag a lot.

Name/Race: First Mate Sandara Quinn (Turned PC after a character death way back in Wormwood Mutiny)
Class/Level: Inquisitor 7 (Besmara)
Adventure: From Shore to Sea
Location:

Spoiler:
Tunnels underneath the island

Cause of Death: Chuul
The Gory Details:
Spoiler:
The penultimate encounter was against 2 Chuul - one hiding in a room and one poised to lure the PCs past the room so the first Chuul could jump out and surprise them. Sandara wins initiative, charges right up to the far Chuul and proceeds to get beat upon by 2 flanking Chuul in the rounds to follow.
Fortunately, the party had a scroll of reincarnation handy, and one pivotal UMD check later - new Sandara!

Unfortunately the hour it takes a reincarnated body to form allowed the primary antagonist a significant time to prepare. This probably influenced the next death:

Name/Race: Captain Orphius; Human
Class/Level: Oracle 6 (Juju)/Soul Eater 1 (Charon)
Adventure: From Shore to Sea
Location:

Spoiler:
Final area in the tunnels beneath the island

Cause of Death: Fellow party member :)
Spoiler:
who was dominated by Mohl'omog the aboleth

The Gory Details: Epic final battle of the adventure. When the main antagonist finally reveals himself, the party wizard uses an Elemental Stone to summon a Large Earth Elemental to engage the enemy. Orphius decides the safest place on the battlefield is behind the elemental. Unfortunately the main antagonist is
Spoiler:
an aboleth named Mohl'omog who uses his last Dominate Monster to dominate the party wizard who subsequently orders his Large Earth Elemental to turn around and squash Orphius into oracle goo. Since at this point the party's fighter and rogue (technically ninja) were also dominated, the only remaining PC (the above-reincarnated Sandara) decided to remove herself from the situation. I was lenient and since the aboleth was so obsessed with freedom, he just used the dominated PCs to complete his escape route and left.
Coulda been a TPK though. Orphius also receives a reincarnation, but this one from a dwarven druid ship captain.

Grand Lodge

There's actually been more deaths in my campaign than I expected from the outset. They were all memorable though, so here goes:

Fafmir Ladyhands
Elf Wizard 3
Death:Drowned by summoned squid when fighting the Brinebrood queen.
Last words: "...I don't wanna die like a japanese schoolgiiiiirl!" (said out of character)

Captain Olhaf Leatherskin
Half-Orc Fighter 3/Barbarian 1
Death:Impaled on Royster McCleagh's greatsword and died standing up.
Last words: "...take the damn axe..."

Sil'Rand
Elf Ranger 6
Death:Slept in a dingy right below the canopy creeper of mancatcher cove. Was pulled up and eaten alive, then had his wolf companion crushed when the new captain failed his Profession(Sailor) check and ran the ship aground on the beach where the dying wolf was lying.
Last words: "...idiots..."

Celia
Elf Wizard 6
Was alive for only 50 real-life minutes.
Death: Was rescued from imprisonment in the sahuagin caves and later killed and turned into a coral statue by king Krelloort wielding Zul.
Last words: "..."

Chazo the undying
Catfolk ninja 7
Death: Torn apart by a couple of hammerhead sharks in the sahuagin caves of mancatcher cove.
Last words: "...for the captain..."

Current party consists of:

Captain Boram "Ballbuster"
Halfling Monk 4/Shintao Monk 1/Cleric 2

Kragoth
Half-orc Shaman 5/Shapeshifter 1

Era
Human Samurai 6

Durim
Dwarf barbarian 6

I'll keep you updated on the fates of these poor individuals.

From a combination of having a merciful-ish DM, six people instead of four, some min-maxing, and sheer dumb luck and teamwork, our group has come out relatively unscathed. The only death that occurred was actually due to OOC drama which caused us to swap DMs. The DM's girlfriend didn't want any more part in it, which was fine. We were going to accept that she just left the crew, but instead she went ahead and claimed that her character mutinied and sailed off into the sunset with our second ship.

Yeah, we didn't let that happen.

Ryunai
NG kitsune druid lvl 4

Attempted mutiny. Was assassinated in her sleep prior to proceeding with the mutiny. Then the captain (a cannibal) had her corpse cooked and ate her. Lastly, he had her skull and heart placed on the ship's figurehead, which had two spike-like protrusions from its hands for just such use.

We're not good people, at least ICly.

As far as NPCs go, we lost Sandara and Owlbear to the canopy creeper in Mancatcher. The captain had kept one of the sahuagin who raided Mancatcher as an aide to direct them, though he mercilessly tortured the information out of him (removed his arms, tail, eyes, and teeth and cauterized his gums so the teeth wouldn't grow back).

Our group had gone inside. Sandara was left in charge and she opted to get rid of the tortured sahuagin. When she tried to, he let out a call that summoned the canopy creeper. The crew was left to fight the thing on their own. Our DM rolled and decided they'd won, but at a cost. Sandara was killed and Owlbear died dragging it down to the ship where they were able to kill it (hell of a crit roll, that one). No one's ever made fun of Owlbear or his memory since, and we've plans to name a ship after him. Sandara was given a proper burial as well just because she was a cleric of Besmara and we didn't want to bring any divine wrath down on our heads.

Silver Crusade

We've had 22 character deaths so far, they're preparing to go after Aiger's Kiss... So lots of time for more to die. :/

Holy s&*!. That's got to be a record.

How many of them did Bonewrack Isle claim, Camelot?

Perhaps to just save tine you could just put Salty Dog the 2nd/3rd/4th next to their name. ;)

Well, I have never even thought about obituaries before for group (I'm one of the players mind) but this particular adventure has somehow brought out the death toll for us. Hmmm let's start shall we ^^.

Name : Kierra
Class and Level: Catfolk Rogue (Spy) Lv5
Catalyst: Protecting the keep from the evil pirates (Our captain considers us privateers, he's a goofy CG Elf)
The breakdown: While her husband, the more cat then folk Rogue (My character, he was slightly insane) was handing the more dangerous bit of launching himself behind the enemies to make for the snick snick of a two rogue killing couple, a certain Sorc slipped in in her invisibility and managed to put up a fog that prevented Jing (My character) from seeing the danger creeping up behind her, 3 crits given in the same space of time by three different pirates, lo and behold the cards flip and a good old decapitation comes up killing her with the first crit...the body was pretty much shredded by the end of the rest of the crits.

Name: Jing the Bandit King
Class and Level: Catfolk Rogue (Swashbuckler) Lv6
Catalyst: Further delving into insanity at loss of wife and the inability to communicate underwater (only party member without Aquan as a language) and his lifelong ambition since he got on the ship of fishing up sharks for dinner.
The breakdown: Well let's face it, my lovely CN beastial character had a lot of INT but not a lot of WIS to back it up, thus...throughout the game, much to the laughter of the entire group, he became the most interesting trapfinder ever...a cat on a rope. (I had it coming as a player as our last campaign I may have dangled a paladin on a rope as dragon bait) The first in the door every time, the cat swam his way into room after room taking the brunt of the attacks, much to the hatred of the party healer (Some mishmash of four different classes). They cleared the underwater cavern, saved the fish people, and found a new character. (that was retconned slightly). Poor Jing, broken and beaten over and over was numb from the amount of attacks landed upon him over the last day, not suspecting a thing the living trap that was set off as they cast off snagged him up and began to drag him higher and higher into the air. Before anyone could notice he was far too high (A good 90 feet in the air), the Ranger at last heard his screams of anger and cut the vine with a well placed arrow. Jing's luck worked one last time landing him in the water instead of the deck...however that was his last life all the same, the Non-lethal damage turned quite lethal far too quickly and they fished his poor dead body out of the water. That was one dead and flat catfolk.
Name: Sithiss
Class and Level: Gillman Bard (Sound Striker) Lv10
Catalyst: Non spoony bardedness and following his shtick a little to much.
The breakdown: Perhaps laughing in the face of death was wrong, but it was soon apparent that dancing and playing your flaming bagpipe of doom far wronger. (Perfect weapon for a sound striker no? Wand of produce flame inside of bagpipe for comical effect and flavor ^^). After facing, Giant creatures of the deep, phase spiders, pirates, and gargoyles...who would be terrified of cyclopsi...well he learned far too late you should. While a normal group would be all for hiding behind the walking tin can and let the cyclops smite away at him, ours....was a little different, seeing the poor man getting hammered down over and over, the brave bard jumps in front to prevent the poor guy from getting overwhelmed...and well to do his bag of firing at every enemy at once. This was perhaps a terrible mistake, a cyclops was rather mad about the crit he received and charged forwards with a great axe returning said crit. While it wasn't an instant kill card...it was a doozy, card came up normal damage and equal bleed. (Our group works on the idea that a x3 weapon gets x2 on normal) 46 points of pain square to the chest landed the man fish at about 20 HP left...and then he was up next BOOM 46 more points of blood come screaming out of his chest leaving him a dried husk on the floor. While he had the opportunity to be revived, the death was too traumatic and the soul would not endure coming back.

That is us up to date....So far in our group 4 total deaths (One not mentioned since the player quite right after). Two from my own personal self and one from my wife (I know it's not normal to play relationed in the game but I had already drawn up the character and her wants ended up being almost exactly the same and since it was her first game we rolled with it.) I shall update as more deaths arrive...Our poor CG Aquatic Elf captain is starting to slow shift to the more....CN side of things as crew member after crew member die horrific deaths. Jing should've died....about 8 different times, black cat saved his life every time...what a feat investment ^^

Sczarni

I got told about this thread so I copypasta'd to this one what I had typed out in the other. I have to say, it has been lovely reading all the deaths. My own personal experiences for our group that have differed from the norm goes as follows...

We rallied up about 85% of the crew under our flag (We had five players and all of us were social creatures...boy was the mutiny hilarious). During the Mutiny our captain to be asked that all NPCs stand down, much to the disappointment to the entire rest of the crew they all did, leaving us to fight down the baddies by ourselves. We pulled out relatively unharmed.
Conchubar survived and was a delightful crew member...if it wasn't for my own personal character Jing's bad advice causing the death of him. Conch was quite happy to be shark bait for me to fish with (After telling him chicks dig scars and thrill seekers and a hell of a few rolls ^^).
Jing was perhaps the most hated crew member of all, even became the Mascot of the ship (Only officer title anyone was willing to give him). He personally pissed off the higher up by offering fish to them out by leaving them to rot in front of their door every time he upset them...this tactic didn't seem to work.
My favorite bit was when Jing was sent to the Bilges to be dealt with by the two cuthroats...only to have the catfolk knock them both unconscious with his two natural attacks a round. He promptly tied them up with their belts to the ship with their mouths in each others crotches and came upstairs to salute Plugg and tell him he took care of the riffraff as asked. He also staged an attack on Plugg, chopping off all his buttons and his ponytail and planted the evidence in the "evil" crew's lockers and pockets....He was quite the little troublemaker...he will be missed.

Name/Race: Jasper the Still
Class/Level: Illusionist 3/Rogue 3 (level 6)
Ship Role: Quartermaster
Location: Gundeck of the Thresher
Cause of Death: Ungodly explosion

background information:
I replaced Tidewater Rock with the Tower of the Last Baron module and increased the size of Windward Isle to be more of an important location.

After successfully freeing the town of Piren's Bluff from the grasp of the Chelish* and cracking the rock, various members of the Magnificent Bastard's crew were offered marriage to Lady Smythee's children.

Jasper, the incredibly good looking Half-orc quartermaster was offered marriage by Lady Smythee herself and was to become lord of the rock.

When a certain scantily-clad pirate captain invaded the wedding ceremony with her aquatic charges, Jasper wasn't going to stand by and do nothing.

With a cry to Besmara on his lips, he managed to teleport aboard the Thresher and sneak to the gun deck unnoticed. One carefully placed fireball spell later and..

BOOM

The ship was no more, but unfortunately neither was Jasper.

*Replaced with a similar homebrew nation

I am looking forward to starting my group on this AP, one in particular i think might not make it past the first night.
