Tower Shield Specalist -advice

Silver Crusade

So far I am level three. we have a majority vote house rule is if you multiclass you get 1/2 max hp, if you stay in your initial class you get max hp each level. was either go with it or not play.

14. 19, 12, 12, 12, 10 = sdciwc

He was initially going to be an archer in a breastplate. at 2nd level he became a tower shield specalist though.
We are on the smuggler's shiv, Just entering the red mountain. still have about half the wrecks to explore. we scouted them all out though and our navigator made a map of the island. Ive become the party's primary tank.

Skills
Climb, C-Wpn smith, C- boywer, c-armorer, k-engineering, k-dungeon, Survival, Swim

Feat Human - Weapon Finese
Feat 1st Level- Combat Reflexes
Feat Figther - Paired Opertunist
trait - Get the Package though (The Masterwork Tower Shield)
trait - Wealthy Family

Spent initial money (+1200G) on MW Breast Plate, Rapier, Scimitar, Elvish Blade, Comp Long Bow, watertight crate of 10 quivers, anvil, smiths tools, fletching tools, bowyer tools, assorted trade goods. and a pony. Made the stuff myself as my journeyman pieces. The first guy wakes up to see the pony being eaten.. lost the anvil but everything else survived.

at 2nd He said that everyone needed to pick a specality for our class. I had been using the tower shield, so that none would think is my package. So i went TS Specalist and picked up.

Feat - Shield Focus.

At 3rd i took my next feat

Feat - Saving Shield

I know being in the jungle and going to be exploring ruins I cant really wear more armor then I am now. but maybe a more enhanced type to make.

at 4th level our DM is allowing is to multiclass into any other PC class on the island. That gives me option of Druid, Cleric, Inquisitor, Cavalier, Ranger, or Ninja.

At 5th level (when we "clear" the island of all hostiles) we are allowed to multiclass into any class we have so far encountered as PC's (or any prestige we fit requirements for).

Of the rest of my players they mostly perfer single class 2nd ed pc's, me i perfer multi class pc's in the d20 system.

DM set HP at max, half of new class if you multiclass. Only real hard rule, that and whats available.

I was initially leaning towards working my way up to being a Stalwart Defender (as I do charge in first and plant my shield.)
But it requires a +7 BAB, F-Dodge, F-Endurance, F-Toughness.
That would be 3 of my next 4 Feats, assuming i stayed a Fighter.

next level I am thinking of taking a level in either cleric or inqisitor and using the Words of Power. that system looks vary interesting.

What are you all's thoughts. If id a know about how the adventure path starts i would a done things differently. We are friends with all the other survivers and a couple islanders.

What im looking for is a suggestion of a multi class path that will be fun to play and not suffer too baddly as main tank (25 ac)with half max hit points.

I should also note that the DM's Dice, when they do hit me, hit me for max or close too. I have been dieing 3 times (-neg con) before i hit 3rd.

With mental ability scores no higher than 12, I don't recommend you take any class where spellcasting is the main feature.

If you do go for Stalwart Defender the Toughness feat is going to help somewhat against your DM's apparently arbitrary rule on hit points. I personally like playing 'survivor' build PCs (high defenses, immunities, etc.) and I like the Stalwart Defender prestige class.

You have a unique circumstance in that your DM's houserules penalize your playstyle (multiclassing). I would try to talk with him to reach some kind of agreement or you might find it difficult to enjoy playing at his table. You have the options of: staying single-class fighter, being a pretty good tank and possibly being bored/disinterested in the character, or; multiclassing, having fewer and less-effective spells than other PCs and being a bit closer to death each encounter. Seems like the latter option might provide additional excitement, but it's not so much fun when you're the only one dying.

The truth be told is hes my oldest friend, is family. I could no more walk away from his gaming table then i could my moms dinner table :) Weve been playing pen and paper games since 88. This is to challange me to either try a single class guy in his world and see how i like it, or try hard and come up with something more interesting.

I play alot of mmo's where your stuck in a single class, couple spec's at most. Thats why i so dig the d20 multiclassings, even with xp penalties (that just means the character gets more play time before he has to retire. table rule at level 20 any system retires character. )

I don't want to go single class. It just seems so long, Thats going to be the end of the 2nd book before I can change my class from figther to something else.

Im ok with having fewer and less effective spells. I already am the closest to death, the tower gives me a -5 ref saves (adjusted). I do have a good dex, maybe a couple levels in a rogue type class to balance that out and get a bunch more skills. or the inq/cleric route take a level in each for a bunch of osirins and clw for after combat. Cant really go arcane -65% spell fail atm.

I truly dont mind dieing. I love the making of characters and theorizing bout what to do, as much as the playing and rolling.

Is this a houserule also? Because using a shield of any kind, even a tower shield, does not penalize your reflex saving throw. It has a steep (-10) armor check penalty, but that only affects dex-based and Strength-based skills, like Fly, Acrobatics, and Ride.

If the weight of the shield is making your PC encumbered, you still only take penalties to those skills and your movement speed.

Your Reflex saving throw should be +5 (+1 base, +4 Dex mod) without other bonuses.

Grand Lodge

Where does the penalty to reflex saves come from?

Silver Crusade

the armor check applies to ref saves. thats how we read it.

Grand Lodge

No, it doesn't.

Silver Crusade

we assumed because ref was dex that it was affected also. we took it to be all anything dex based.

Well that makes it inquisitor i think for level 4, less anyone has a better suggestion?

Silver Crusade

weve done the past few years in eberron. house cannith artifacer.. actually reunited the three parts of the House at level 18. He was art/war/sorc/expert/guildmaster.

Had another war/sorc/dragonsiciple.
had another cleric/rogue/war, dwarven defender

bunch of assorted sorcs and bladesingers.

I still have a folder of about 30 guys that are alive in 2e. our homebrew world is vary harsh. we average 2-3 /8 people dieing a week.

Pathfinder ive come close because of that missunderstanding about ref saves. but maybe something artificery wise. something that my breastplate and tower wouldnt interfear with. it already has a silver holy symbol of sarenae on it.

So For the Defender I have this path that should work faily nicely.
4-Fighter feat - Toughness
5-Fighter feat - Dodge
6-Fighter feat - Endurance.
7 Take a level of Cavalier (musketeer archtype for the pistol)
Join order the Dragon, dedicate self to protecting the adventuring group (we will have created a name for ourselves by then)
The teamwork feat and the challange will help the party.
8-Cavilier 2nd. Being able to grant +3ac against 1 hit, will be vary nice specailly if it stacks with the saving shield.

9th would let me take level 1-10 of the Defender and figure out the last character level when i hit 19, either fighter 7 or cav 3.

Assuming not finding any magical armor or shield. at level 9 I will have an AC of 27 i think, and have the ability to shield another for +3ac 3x per day and +2ac indeffinatly if they standing next to me.
88 HP (+toughness) i think. Not too shabby and the d12 for Defender will be 13+toughness.

But it just seems so blah for combat, I stand there with my shield, nothing gets by me, if it tries to ive got 5 attacks of oppertunity (next level,4 now). I need a pistol or hand crossbow or 1handed ranged weapon if im gonna use the TS.

a more colorfull option would be
4 Inquisitor 1
5 Wizard 1
6 Fighter 4
7 Fighter 5
8 Cleric 1
9 Fighter 6
10 Fighter 7
11-20 Defender

This would allow me to use most any wand while defending a spot with my tower shield planted. and having +5 to hit with ranged will be nice for those ranged touch attacks too. Arcane spell failure does not effect wands and such does it?

Silver Crusade

any thoughts on if the second more colorfull path looks good or not?

Does arcane spell failure from armor effect scroll or wand useage? Can you use a wand with a shield in the other hand?

Scarab Sages

I don't think failure applies, no, but I usually play more martial characters so i'm not sure. I can totally see a tower shield/wand combo.

Are you talking about dwarven defender there or Stalwart defender?

Grand Lodge

You will be quite weak, and you can be "colorful", without being weak.

Silver Crusade

The stalwart defender, Martin is Keleshite Human.

Unless my math is off..

Option 1 f4/f5/f6/c7/c7/sdx10/c3.

+181 HP
BAB 20/15/10/5
+10 Fort
+9 Ref
+8 Will
+5 Dex

1Option 2
Going the OCD route
+207 HP
BaB 17/12/7/2
12 Fort
5 ref
8 Will

Ability to use any Cleric, Wiz, INQ wand.
+1 Dex, +4con
Hand crossbow (prof)
Arcane Bonded to Tower Shield
Scribe Scrolls
School= Either Divination or Transmutation ==bared school-Illusion, Necromantic
Aura of Good/Lawfullness.
Channel Positive Energy d6 3x per day
Divine Magic
0 1st
7 4, 3 Domain's

Arcane Magic
0th 1st
3 2

I wouldnt call option B quite weak. 26 more HPS, Dex does not effect my AC any more in a BP. So AC is the same Route 1 or 2. Toughness is not counted in as it will work for both routes the exact same.

Basically either Ref or will is higher by 3 points.
Route A has a +3bab,(+7 w finease weapon) +27
Route B has a -3bab, (+5 w finease weapons) +22

Choon, Martin is a Kelshite Human so Stalwart Defender, Unless someone knows a free race change that does not effect attributes?

Blackbloodtroll Whats your suggestion for being colorfull? What is your defination of weak/not weak?

Vendle, Figured out where got the -5 to ref saves. (it was actually an 8 that i wrote sloppy)

Its actually susposed to be a -8 to attack roll for using the Weapon Finease with a Tower Shield. "If you carry a shield, its armorcheck penalty applies to your attack rolls." "When employing a tower shield in combat, you take a –2 penalty on attack rolls because of the shield’s encumbrance."

Master Work Tower Shield
9 Armor Check

Fighter 3 "..a tower shield specialist gains armor training as normal, but while heemploys a tower shield, the armor penalty is reduced by 3"

That brings AC down to an 8 Check W the TS.
At Fighter 5 it will drop down to a 6.

Currently at F3 have +5 Hit (3bab,2str).
If use finease have 5-8+1= -2 to Attack Roll.
If dont use finease have +7 to Attack Roll.

Humm maybe i shouldn't use finease when using the TS, am sure martin would know that, even if i don't.

Silver Crusade

I think I should actually build both of those guys and show the gm/my buddy the differances at level 20. or 10 for that matter. If anyone has feat suggestions ill listen to them.

Option A has more hit points, (mostly due to con bonus) and slighly more balanced saves. He can use a pistol for a 1 handed ranged weapon. and Has 25 Rounds of Defensive Stance.

Option B has less hit points and a higher Fort save. He can use a hand crossbow, As well as Cleric, Wizard and Inq wands/staffs in his mainhand. He can also cast the following 7 different 0th and 4 1st level divine spells, with 3 different Domains. He also has 3 0th and 2 1st level arcane spells. and 24 Rounds of Defensive Stance
