I would more say that the storyline winded - and quite well, truth be told.
Pretty sure part of the reason it was ended was the same reason as the new Thundercats: Great show, great ratings, poor toy sales.
Call me cynical, but given that Freakazoid was right in his rant about shows needing to be "Toyetic," I'm inclined to believe that the reason that Teen Titans Go! is coming back and Young Justice (and Green Lantern) got the axe is purely toy-related.

My son and I enjoyed watching the original Thundercats. He's also a fan of Avatar The Last Airbender. I'm not sure how he feels about Legend of Korra, but I love it. That said, he likes Spongebob too.
For every good cartoon aimed at kids like Avatar and Korra, you get a bunch of crap like Chowder and The Amazing World of Gumball.
I've seen some episodes of Phineas and Ferb and I find it to be a kid-friendly version of Family Guy. Not seen Spectacular Spider-Man (didn't know about it's pedigree, but now that I do I'll give it a shot) and I love Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Most people don't like Ultimate Spider-Man but I find it hilarious.
In the end, I watched a lot of cartoons and anime growing up and I try to get my son to do the same. Animaniacs, Tiny Toon Adventures, Batman: The Animated Series, Gargoyles, Exo-Squad, Ronin Warriors, Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball, Ducktales, Tailspin, Rescue Rangers, Darkwing Duck. I watched all of these and more. But its rare to find shows nowadays that come close to matching up to those listed above, cartoon or not. And most parents don't even try, because they figure that a...
Well, there was a lot of crap cartoons when we were kids, too. It just doesn't get remembered as fondly. :)
Interesting take on Phineas and Ferb. Oddly, I can't stand Family Guy, but think P&F is great. I tried watching Ultimate Spider-man and couldn't get into it. Though I may be biased against it since Disney specifically canceled Spectacular Spider-man after buying Marvel so they could make their own Spider-man show in USM. I read the heck out of out the USM comics, though, until a few years ago. Lost interest after the whole Ultimatum crossover event.
I will warn you, on Spectacular Spider-man, they weren't expecting to be cancelled, so the final episode works well as a season finale, but not so much as a series finale.
I agree about the number of parents that just plunk their kids in front of a cartoon and ignore it. The better half or I try to watch at least one episode of a show with our son before we allow him to continue to watch it on his own to make sure it's appropriate. We also limit his screen time (both TV and video games) so he has to be very choosy about what he watches/plays.

Nope, not cynical. Greg Weisman (there's his name again) pretty much said the lack of toy and merchandise revenue was a big reason for CN pulling the plug on Young Justice.
At least he was able to see the writing on the wall with Young Justice and make an ending that could work as either a season or series finale.

Oh I agree about the crappy cartoons we had growing up (Super Duper Sumo immediately comes to mind... 26 episodes and it got a Gameboy Advance game out of the deal). Sure you had a lot of them, but they usually didn't last long due to poor quality and as a result got canceled (though there were exceptions...) Now, its the crappy shows that get renewed while the quality shows get the axe (again there are exceptions).
I love P&F for the musical numbers and Perry the platypus (Dr Doofenshmirtz cracks me up). Dan Povenmire, one of the co-creators of Phineas and Ferb, actually worked on Family Guy at one point and the two both worked on The Simpsons (which was how they met) and Rocko's Modern Life. Povenmire's mission statement was to do a less raunchy version of Family Guy with P&F. He thought his connection to FG would prevent Disney from picking it up, but the VP was actually a Family Guy fan and loved that he had written for it. The fact that one of them was quoted as saying that show wasn't crafted just for children, but they made sure not to exclude them was what convinced me to give the show a chance.
USM took some getting used to, but once I accepted the fact that this Spidey was actually being portrayed as a smart-mouthed kid from the New York trying to play with the hand he was dealt rather than the emo love-struck guy trying to make the best of his situation (which has been done to death), I could appreciate it more. But USM also proves that the Freakazoid statement was dead on (he's part of a SHIELD sanctioned team that consists of Power Man, Iron Fist, a female White Tiger, and the Hispanic Nova as well as having him use SHIELD crafted equipment like the Spider-bike and hi-tech web-shooters to drum up toy sales). But the humor gets me (especially when he breaks the 4th wall to make asides to the audience) and the life lessons that Parker learns are pretty cool as well (don't really get enough of these nowadays).

Well... I finished up Hero Tales on Netflix and I've started on Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom. Unfortunately, since it had been running on ANOD, I'm missing quite a few episodes. Love Hajime Saito in this, but then that character was pretty cool in Ruroni Kenshin too. Hero Tales was not what I expected, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I'm holding off on watching what episodes of D. Gray-man there on Netflix. Just waiting to see what May brings.

A little French History, with just the right bit of fictional license, in that old school anime classic, the Rose of Versailles.
plus, something no fan of anime should ever miss out on- even if it can never have an official release- the legendary fan-created Daicon4 opening.
The creative team behind this fan video, they would go on to form Gainax- and in the words of the late Paul Harvey, "now you know the rest of the story"...

OSCAAARRRRRRRRRRR!
Wow, GREAT news that Rose of Versailles is now distributed by Nozomi--had no idea. I got interested in it ages ago because of my obsessive fandom of Revolutionary Girl Utena (which borrows some themes and aethestics from Rose of Versailles, although in its entirely mind-effed-up late 90s manner) and someone sent me some fansubs because it was not available commercially, but I've always hoped to see it properly. Nice to see Nozomi has put it on Youtube, and I'll have to order it!

Hey, I watched it when I was a little boy, in french it was dubbed "Lady Oscar", and I remember it was really beautiful but the story was a little too girly for me.

I'm very picky about what Anime I'll watch nowadays, I've grown to dislike a lot of the stuff I've seen in the past.
Mecha, I don't tend to enjoy things revolving around Mecha and other robots.
I have seen some in the past (e.g. GitS, Gundam, Patlabor, Escaflowne, Orguss and others) but just grew tired of them so it's rare for me to like them.
Anything by Studio Ghibli, I've seen stuff up to Holw's Moving Castle in 2004 but just can't enjoy the style of them.
Anyway... I won't go endlessly listing stuff I don't like as it'll be a massive list.
Some Anime that I enjoy:
Paranoia Agent (one of my favourites for the way the story develops, if anyone likes Serial Experiments Lain and hasn't already seen Paranoia Agent should add it to their watch list)
Monster (if you've seen Paranoid Agent, then you've likely seen Monster as well... if not then add it to your watch list! Same sort of dark and surprising storyline but a bit less of the messing with your mind and touch more towards horror)
Planetes
Haibane Renmei
Perfect Blue
Waltz with Bashir (It's an animated documentary about the 1982 Lebanon war, but is well worth the watch. The artistic styling is perfect and the story is quite emotional. It's only a short film and is well worth the watch!)
X/1999
Angel Sanctuary (I think the idea of incest tends to put some people off this one though. I do wish someone would take Kaori Yuki's Earl Cain and turn that into an Anime as well)
Shadow Skill
Tokyo Babylon
Steins;Gate
Last Exile
Hundred Stories (or Requiem From the Darkness as it's better known, is definitely one of the more disturbing and gory horror Anime programmes out there, it's fantastic for anyone who likes their darker stuff)

Well, it IS a shoujo series :) . But it's a shoujo series about a crossdressing swordfighting badass woman, so that's good enough for me. :)

I second you on a lot of your stuff, especially Ghibli(but isn't that obvious?), Planets and Monster ( Haven't seen paranoia agent yet, but it is on my list of "what's next"), I would add Cowboy beebop and of course Samurai champloo, one of the best anime I have ever seen!

![]() |

So... I just watched Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-Chan last night.
Not entirely sure what to make of it at the moment, my first thought was 'what the hell am I watching' but the madness was quite enthralling at the time so I couldn't stop myself.

Samurai Champloo's a little hit and miss for me, the quality of the episodes (more so in Season 2) seems to go up and down like a roller-coaster.
I did love the baseball episode and one about Mugen's past, but then a couple like the zombie episode felt like major let downs.Cowboy Beebop is like an Anime for Star Wars fans, but done infinitely better than Star Wars... probably because it's aimed more at adults and the background stories for all the characters intertwine so well.
Surren it seems like we will rarely watch the same stuff as you are a very specific kind of fan. Might I suggest kinos journey, gunslinger girl and tokyo godfathers?
I've got the novels for Kino's Journey but never got around to watching the Anime, I'll have to grab it and have a look.
Unsure if I've seen Tokyo Godfathers already or not, I'll add it to my list of stuff to pick-up and watch/re-watch.
Definitely haven't watched/read any of the Gunslinger Girl series, I shall have a look if anyone near me has it.

Great to see this thread is active again.
I've been watching Attack on Titan... currently up to episode 18 (of 25) and I love it.
Also been watching Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic.
Fairy Tail came up on my radar, as did Sword Art Online (watched the first episode on Toonami, finished the series on Hulu). I also watched The Devil's A Part-Timer and laughed my butt off.
Still following Rebuild of Eva.... and if the stuff I've seen in 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo is any indication, then FINAL is gonna be awesome.

Whay is this watamote?
Also, I am just getting into a few old series that I have only recently discovered on hulu, who isgiving crunchyroll a rrun for their money. I marathoned mysterious girlfriend x, and am about to complete the devil is a part timer. I'm just getting into robotics notes and girls und panzer (the latter is too cute for words!). I'm going to start watching oriemo soon.

Late as ever, but I think a few comments can go here...
First, thank goodness someone else gives love to Paranoia Agent. Island Obsessional Park is one of the greatest opening themes for a series ever, and it makes me get all misty-eyed, especially when thinking of how all throughout the juxtaposition of laughter and catastrophe is so strangely heart-wrenching, more so as you learn of each of the people in the intro.
Secondly, I'm probably dating myself by this admission, but I still have much love for the Knight Sabers, across all iterations; BubbleGum Crisis, Crash, Crisis 2040, and even the semi-prequel AD Police files.
Third, I don't care how people judge me, I also still enjoy the Bakuretsu (Sorcerer) Hunters series, for all of the food puns, fanservice, and silliness involved. I won't lie, I've wanted to build a Tira-esque Inquisitor, hat and all.
And now, for random series glurge - Yoroiden Samurai Troopers/Ronin Warriors, Silent Mobius, Ushio & Tora (AKA FORM BLAZING HAIR!), Ike! Inachuu Takkyuu-bu/Ping Pong Club, Heroic Legend of Arislan, Boogiepop Phantom, DanGaiOh, Mazinga-Z/TranZor-Z, TekkaMan AND TekkaMan Blade...
Wait, I should organize my series out more before I start listing damned near everything from the 70's through today...

First ever would probably be Voltron (the Americanized Go-Lion). Or possibly Robotech.
The first thing I saw that somebody said was called "anime" was probably Ranma 1/2, which was the first in a marathon night a club was showing that also included Crying Freeman and a fantasy anime that looked like Record of Lodoss War but wasn't, and a couple other things I don't remember.

Rynjin |

"First ever" was Digimon. As a child of that time, I pretty much just watched what was on on Saturday mornings and Toonami.
The first I feel that "counted" (i.e. it wasn't shoved in my face and I watched it because it was there, as well as having some more complex themes...though don't get me wrong, Digimon, DBZ, and so on hold a place in my heart) was Trigun.
Yeah that probably dates me as a much later start than most in this thread.

First thing I watched that I was told was anime was "Akira" when I was about 10 or 11. My older friend (the same one who got me into D&D at 8) told me was like G.I. Joe but with blood. Really didn't think it was anything like G.I. Joe but it blew my mind. I used to ride arond the neighborhood pretending my bicycle was Tetsuo's motorcycle.

First anime I ever saw(subtitled and unedited) was Project A-ko. Does anyone remember there first anime?
Ninja Scroll. I watched it at a friends house. It was also the first R rated thing I remember seeing. I was 12.
I don't remember if I watched Cowboy Bebop on Adult Swim or if I got my hands on Kenshin first, as the first thing I watched for myself.

I think I remember revolutionary girl utena the movie. Wasn't that the one where a girl with pink hair falls into a clock and gets turned into a car?
I've seen excel saga so I'm used to weird, but it really blew my mind. Speaking of weird I have found memories of Pani Poni Dash, lovable characters, very weird but funny story.
Ga-Rei Zero wasn't bad, plot hole not withstanding, I watched when I was on a yuri kick some years ago. Also saw Blue Drop around the same time. Oh if anyone likes yuri, Yuru Yuri made me laugh so hard, I love Ayano by the way.
Honestly I've seen so many animes I wouldn't know where to start.

The Utena Movie was the shoujo counterpart to End of Evangelion. If you watch the whole movie and can speak complete sentences by the end, you have the mental fortitude of Athena, the goddess of wisdom. And yes, it's the one where the pink haired girl is turned into a car, which is then driven by her creepy purple haired girlfriend and they are chased by a mass of locust shaped vehicles.
The television series it was based on, while certainly a bit esoteric and whacky at points, was far less cracktastic by comparison. I do recommend it, as it is simultaneously a classic shoujo series and yet one that turns a LOT of shoujo tropes on its head, and has female protagonists I don't actually want to kick until dead.
Excel Saga is awesome in its own way. I'd already seen Utena the Movie a couple times by the time I watched Excel Saga, so it could do little damage to me.

Just blew through Ghost Hunt which you can find on Netflix. Despite not having a whole lot of character development, it was quite enjoyable. I liked that the characters weren't the usual superpowered anime characters slicing ghosts in half with their katanas. A nice change of pace and it scratched two itches at once (my desire to watch more horror movies this time of year and anime). If you have Netflix, I definitely recommend it- the Doll House case was my favorite.
