Army of Undead

Advice

So I'll be playing a necromancer soon, Cleric undead lord. And im very excited about it. Any one play one that can give pointers? Is it better to have a horde of 1hd creatures or 1 large hd creature? Skeletons or zombies? In your opinion what's the best undead to have under your control? I was thinking of hunting around for a plague zombie that way I can enlarge my small army without having to drop 25 gp for each minion but would they out grow my ability to control them too quickly? Any and all advice will be appreciated, please don't hold back...

Is this for a one-on-one game, or an evil party?

Sczarni

sounds cool, if it were me id prefer a shambling horde rather than just one big zombie ogre or something.

Liberty's Edge

As a general rule you're better off having the biggest baddest undead you can.

Actually its a mostly neutral party, with maybe one character playing chaotic good, but everyone knows this is the character im playing so they wont build their characters as having a problem with undead

Well intra party politics wise, youre character will still be 'the creepy guy'. Just remember to still heal people, though, and they will probably put up with whatever your character does.

I played a necro in 3.5 that was a cleric/wizard. The first undead he spent onyx on was an ogre skeleton. He put its gear back on it, and it followed him wherever he went. He bought a large cloak for it, and gloves and boots so it was hard to tell at a glance he was undead.
The party, knew, but didnt care, as he healed them. He was the healer, so what if he was a little wierd?

So go for fewer quantity and more hd than fewer hd and just a load of them running around? My guess was that with more of them they could do more damage, if I have say 4 zombies that have 3hd a piece that's basically 4 chances to hit compared to 12 zombies with 1hd each and it being 12 chances to hit.

Why is it better to have bigger hd creatures?

The large group of smaller ones will miss way more often and prove to be of lesser value in the long run, imho.

Exactly, I plan on playing a damphir so I heal when I use my burst to heal up my horde and I'll keep scrolls of cure light wounds and have a few prepared each day to keep the party up, it would be great for everyone in the party to play damphir's but Iget know that wont happen so ill have to keep some normal heals on hand

Shadows are effective for quite awhile. And when they become less so you have Greater Shadows. Touch Attacks ftw.

Aren't shadows intelligent though? So they would get a save each day to avoid being controlled by me. I mean with the right feats that's not too big of a problem but just to be sure of what I would be getting into if I created or controlled one

The Exchange

A wand of desecrate allows you time your daily control rig on intelligent undead without using a spell slot. Undead you animate are under your control unless you release them, undead you create can slip the noose if they are intelligent.
