Where does it actually say that base forms can't be changed when levelling? The Evolutionist archetype clearly works on the assumption that it does, but I'm going blind trying to find it in the Summoner class and Eidolon descriptions.

I know it must be there somewhere, I'm just completely failing to see it.

the archetype specifically states you gain the ability to change your base form. it is explained that between levels you are allowed to change your evolutions. there is no place that says you can change your base form.
you are looking for a place that says you can't change it when in fact you should be looking for a spot that says you can.

SKR

Considering the frequency that variations of "once chosen, this cannot be changed" turn up in the books, the lack of one here is mildly unhelpful.

Quote:
Starting at 8th level, whenever he gains a level, the evolutionist can change his eidolon’s base form to a new base form. Once chosen, this base form is set until the evolutionist gains another summoner level.

The fact that they had to create a special ability to allow you to do it should be enough evidence that you could not do it otherwise.

To create a special ability that gives you the ability to do something you can do anyway makes no sense at all, and such a thing has never and will never be done.

Not quite true, but in this instance, it is very so much true.

I think the intent of prone shooter was to allow you to shoot a prone opponent without dealing with the bonus to their AC if you are also prone. Hopefully they errata it because as written it makes no sense. It makes it sound like you have penalties to attack rolls if you are prone.

PS: @MS-> The fact that Sean said you can't should be enough. Once you choose something such as a feat, skill rank allocation, and so on... it is normally permanent. I see no reason why the eidolon gets a free pass. Yeah they can change evolutions, but the rules specifically say you can. As for base forms see my previous post, and Sean's post which list a spell saying you can't as further proof of intent.

Interplanatory Teleport is another example. Greater Teleport can already do what it does.

I think the assumption of Greater Teleport was that you would never leave the planet. Once Paizo knew they would be doing planets they should have errata'd it though.

I accept that entirely.

But needing an archetype from a later book to feel comfortable that in my interpretation of a class shows a lack of clarity in the class as written. And having now read the thread where SKR explains it, I see I'm far from the only person who found it less than entirely clear.
