A small tribe of proto-humans still playing Pathfinder Beta discovered!

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Liberty's Edge

I met a group of 5 persons who were still playing PF Beta using v3.5 MM's. They had no interest in my new flash 5th printing PF corerules whatsoever. They, on average said they disagreed with many changes made from beta to final production version. I did point out that the 5th printing had many changes from the 1st printing - as Borg they told me beta works why change? Hard to argue with that.

That got me thinking, does anyone else still use the beta rules?

Of the 5, 3 had actual Paizo printed beta rules and 2 had print outs.

Curious,
S.

Nope, but I did see one for sale this weekend at Half Price Books. And my copy still has a place of honor on the shelf!

Just the Racial Option for extra Hit Points.

I really miss having Overhand Chop and Backswing as Feats, though. :(

Silver Crusade

I played all through the Curse of the Crimson Throne using the Beta rules... played a Cleric of Sarenrae, healing and fire domains. Could lay down walls of fire like nobody's business. lol

I play pfs, so... No beta anymore.

Ive seen the rules for racial hit points (which I really digged) but what were these? What were some of the big changes from the beta? Where could certain interest parties go looking for the Beta rules? I've always been fairly curious.

I use the racial hit points in my game when characters are made using the 15 point buy.

I have the rules for the beta in my downloads section. I'm not sure how you would go about getting them now, though.

One of my players shows up with an old copy of the beta rules. I said it's probably fine to use as a general outline reference, but we're using the current official PFRG rules supplemented by our home rules document.

I really liked the racial hp thing too...

Clerics' channel energy could heal and harm at the same time, which is so cool that I homebrewed a feat to allow doing just that at the cost of two regular channel uses.

Grand Lodge

Yep - Beta had some NICE stuff in it.

I actually have five copies of the Beta rules. One for me and one for each of the players at my table.

Try here. An old download link to the preview is there.

Its been a long time for me but the current rules (for instance) are more bland than the Beta rules - and closer to 3.5... Beta was still 3.5 compliant but it moved in a customized direction of its own.

Really miss Beta clerics. :( Channeling made a lot more sense (but was admittedly overpowered vs. undead), and the domain powers were awesome, although they totally shredded backward compatibility.

That's the only thing that I still remember in enough detail to miss after all this time.

Overhand Chop and Backswing are now features for the Two-Handed Fighter Archetype in the APG.

My group ran a beta rules game (with some 3.5 content) not too long back. It was actually pretty good. Sorcerer bloodline claws not having a limited number of uses per day actually made them feasible instead of stupid.

My group still uses some of the beta stuff from time to time. We are still using the non-stupid version of the paladin's capstone, for example. :P

My group had until very recently used beta, core was tried but sort of half implemented. One dm loved core, one preferred to mod his beta. Now when I dm we go back to 3.5 with some beta and homebrew. Yes, beta.5brew.

So I have been just like those people. Sometimes changing books is too much of a hassle or there are certain things that get your goat.

Anywhere one could get his hands on beta rules? I'm interested from a design point of view.

I don't think there is an official way to get it, though it is possibly still on the paizo servers if you could find the right link. And I'm pretty sure p2p sharing methods aren't allowed to be discussed on this forum.

Though google may work.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

My copy of the Beta rules is one of the few PF books I'm keeping.

Liberty's Edge

Given it was a free can it be illegal to download?

What is Paizo stance on the beta pdf now, is it free or all or not?

As long as you are happy with a printed version there are some on eBay - good/mint copies equals $$$, but if you just want a play copy then $ is about the cost.

Racial hit points was something I am surprised they didn't keep - it was a good rule.

So not as uncommon as I had thought then. For safety sake I just downloaded the beta and supplements (more spells & magic items + 2 bestiary previews) - just in case Paizo pull the plug on them.

The thing I find surprising is that the beta is a full game, the players were right, no real driver to go spend more money when what you have works fine - and for the pdf users, free.

Free or not, it's copyrighted material.

Stefan Hill wrote:

We no longer offer it for distribution.

The PRD includes the finished game *and* much more, and that's also freely available.

Grand Lodge

The softcover is still available on the secondary market, and there seems to be a wiki of the OGL rules too.

And those would both be legal methods of distribution!

Grand Lodge

That's why I mentioned them! :)

Thanks Vic. I prefer the 5th printing myself, as printings go on the core game seems to improve in playability and balance.

Shadow Lodge

Also, if you added the Beta PDF to your downloads before they stopped offering it, then it stays there forever. Or at least it was there the last time I bothered to notice it.

Too bad I came to Pathfinder too late for the Alpha. I'd like to see those, if only out of curiosity.

Which wiki are you thinking of? I started a Pathfinder Beta wiki, but I gave it up when d20pfsrd.com started up.

The Alpha (v3) wiki I put up is mostly complete (albeit incredibly ugly), though.

Grand Lodge

This one is the one I found.

TriOmegaZero wrote:

That's more complete than mine, but it looks like he gave up at the same time for the same reason.

I read a copy of Pathfinder beta PDF a friend of mine sent me (don't know if he was an actual beta tester or not) and while I liked it at the time, I really think the changes they made in final distribution are much more balanced.
