I am actually torn on this issue...
Logically, emotionally, sense of what is Right...I fully support Gavin Grimm and his battle to use the right bathroom...the government should be protecting the minority and the invididuel rights against the majority.
But thinking if I ever have a child that is transgendered...I would probably encourage her to hide at school...because I know what vicious little s@~!s children can be to those who are different...and with bullying on the rise. Sure at home or with close friends my child can get whatever they want to be. But wait till atleast college before coming out. It kind kills me a little to think this way...but really it does not matter what the difference is children hone in on it like sharks with blood in the water.
I should add if my child does want to come out...I would back them 100%...I would just worry alot more.
I hope I have not offended anybody in thinking this way...I really just have alot of bad memories of grade/high school.

Hiding does not protect your child from the evils of the world; Trust me on that much if nothing else.
And hiding also means you may survive, but the next trans person to come along has to walk that same difficult path alone like you did. I'm a big believer in leaving the path a little cleaner for whoever has to follow
@Crystal: I know you are right ultimately...as I said too many bad memories of what I went though in school...which more had to do with my speech impediment/ brain damage I was still in denial about myself than...to want to spare my child (if I ever have one) of that is tempting.

Oh, I understand the need to protect your kids, but the world is a vile place and there will always be things that threaten them no matter what you do. All any of us can do is teach them to protect themselves as best they can, and teach them that we aren't ashamed of them and will always support them

Okay, so I mentioned that I wanted to post a Kickstarter.
Well, it's a Kickstarter for the "Book of Passion" - Pathfinder rules for sex and romance. I co-authored it and, as a trans woman, I made sure that the book was sex-positive and LGBTQ etc friendly.
The rules for sex are inclusive to any combination of physical sexes or gender identities. There are several ways for a trans character to change physical sex to match his or her actual gender. And there is a chapter devoted to helping GMs create sex-positive societies for any alignment.

It's because of stuff like this that I rarely present overtly outside my home. Well that and the fact that I can't fit my cell phone and wallet in women's pants.

Maybe she has it set to Friends only. Her wife is shaken, but doing ok. She wasn't hurt. The woman who attacked her was. Not badly, but she got what was coming. Picking a fight is a great way to get into one. Turns out that the attackers didn't know who they were up against.
Anyway, be safe everyone. Acceptance still has a way to go even in welcoming cities.

It's depressing how transgender actors are always cast as transgender actors. On the one hand, literally nobody else could relate to the character on a fundamental level, but on the other, it kinda sucks that they never get any other role. Glad Laverne's skills are finally being recognized.

It is pretty disheartening, but sadly not surprising, that things like this still happen. Hate and bigotry are hard to purge - hopefully when haters like this are identified, they will be persecuted - police and court need to reinforce that our society does not tolerate or condone hatecrimes.

Here's something I hope everyone finds at least a little bit humorous (and helps brighten your day, especially with some of BS that's been happening)...
First, some background - about 15 years, inspired by a fellow male co-worker, I decided to grow out my hair and donate it to Locks of Love (something I had actually been thinking about doing prior but kept chickening out). It takes about two years for my hair to be long enough to donate. So I've been doing it a few times now.
I have thick hair with a natural wave - each time I have let my hair grow out the wave becomes curlier and curlier until now I have some nice ringlets at the ends. I've had quite a few women I know say how jealous they are of my hair.
Right now my hair is getting close to the length where I'll cut it so it's fairly long and curly.
And now onto the story...
Monday at work I was in the men's restroom washing my hands. In the mirror I see a gentleman walk in, get this embarrassed look on his face, go back out (to confirm he was in the right bathroom), come back in, and ask "Am I in the right bathroom?" I turned around and, as I walked out, said "yep". This is the second or third time this has happened at work.
Of course the first time something like this happened I was at the movie theater. This rather large gentleman came in, took one look at me from behind, walked out, came back in, took another look at me, walked out, and came back in a third time with a look I can only describe as absolute confusion, embarrassment, and fear on his face. By this time I had turned around. He let out quite the sigh of relief. It was what he said next that had me ready to burst out laughing. He said "I thought with your long curly hair you were a woman and I accidentally walked into the wrong bathroom. My wife would kill me if she found out I did that."

While we may win some cases for our basic human rights in the courts, the American legal system and especially the police as an institution have not been and currently are not our allies. Queer communities have to protect themselves, and not rely on corrupt institutions when they can.

That is sad to hear. I have a hard time assessing the situation in the US. In Germany (and as far as I can tell in western Europe) attacks on members of the Queer community are handled as any attack would be - though sometimes the courts are a bit hesistant to call it out as 'hate crimes', unless there is a big red mark pointing at the hate group.
Tha latter seems to change right now (more visible with right wing hate groups attacking refugees) as courts and politiks seem to realize the danger coming from the rising rightwing tide.

Awesome! I'm a big fan of Locks of Love. I donate two feet every three years or so.
Even when I cut it for Locks of Love, I keep enough to wear in a pony tail. When it gets long, I tend to wear it down. My long hair is one of the few ways that I get to express my true gender in public, so it's very personally important to me - and, as such, it is important that I give others the same opportunity to express themselves with their hair (via locks of love).
