The Thompson Twins were named after characters from Tintin. The Cocteau Twins were named after a song by the band that went on to be Simple Minds (of The Breakfast Club theme song fame. I have no idea why Mr. R.D. James chose the moniker.
I do know what Joy Division were named after, but it's depressing.

That's what Wikipedia says (today, who knows tomorrow). I had always heard it was a reference to Les Enfantes Terribles by Jean Cocteau, about two siblings one of whom is also named Elisabeth. Either way THAT'S what the Simple Minds song was about.
Fun fact: The only song people know by Simple Minds "Don't You (Forget About Me)" wasn't even written by them, but by Keith Forsey, who is best known as Billy Idol's perennial producer and writer of the Flashdance song.

If you watch Titanic backwards, its about a group of IISA zombies boarding a magic submersible steam-powered ship to go play poker in 1912 England. Personally, I think this sounds like a much better film.

The Director's Cut of titanic (10th Anniversary) actually contains the sky from the night the Titanic sank.
I think that was the 3D conversion/release... yep. Also, yet more proof that Neil deGrasse Tyson is awesome.

I needed no such further proof.
Did you know that NdGT is the only man to beat Chuck Norris at a staring contest? Only because it was best of 5 and that's higher than Norris can count.

Working without gloves in sub-zero temperatures can leave you with part of your body strongly reminiscent of Northern Ireland's second best ever punk group. (The best, obviously, being Undertones.)

An average of 13 people die every year from vending machines.
Presumably these are the folks tipping over soda machines to get a free drink. Word to the wise, those things are freaking heavy. If they fall on you, you will most likely be crushed to death.
Too bad they didn't know about this totally legitimate way of getting a free coke. Well...free once the slight matter of airfare to Korea is taken care of.

There are easier and cheaper ways to get free cola.

-You can suffer a heart attack if you hold a sneeze in.
-Tomatoes can detect dozens of different insects trying to eat them, and in turn release a chemical signal that calls in the appropriate kind of predator to take that insect away.
-Tomatoes were considered poisonous in many parts of the world as recent as the 1700's. In fact, before the mid-1700's, tomatoes were grown in the US mainly as decoration, not as food.

Tomatoes have effectively been running the world since approximately 1860.

-Contrary to popular belief, most Europeans were aware that the Earth was round during the Middle Ages (though estimations on the actual size varied tremendously).
-The Big Bang Theory was originally discarded by most cosmologists and physicians as having religious implications (the accepted model back then was that of the Steady State, in which the Universe always was, and always would be, static), after being proposed by Belgian priest Georges Lemaître. The name Big Bang, in fact, was initially intended as an insult to the theory (which was called "Primeval Atom" by Lemaître).
-Dulce de Leche ("Milk Candy"), a sweet caramel-like substance made from condensed milk and a very popular desert in many South American countries, was accidentally created in the mid-1800's when one of the servants of an Argentinian general left milk and sugar boiling on a stove for too long. Today, the average Chilean and Argentinian eats about 10 pounds of Dulce de Leche per year.
-Brushing your teeth after eating is considered a bad idea. Instead, we should do so at least 1 hour after getting any food. This is because the high acidity levels of most modern foodstuffs weakens the outer layers of our teeth, so brushing so soon after eating tears it away. The best scenario is brushing just before eating. But then again, everything tastes horrible, so better just wait an hour.

Ultradan, you are already 3/4s of the way to either a new SyFy original movie or a new "History" Channel special.
