Multiclass into the same class?

Rules Questions

So I am a fairly new player to PF, however I've been running other RPG systems for a long long time. And building a new character idea. I ran into a problem that isn't even close to discussed anywhere that I am aware of.

Can you take multiple levels of the same class as a multiclass?

Example: Say I am building a rogue type character and I want him to be really good at stealing. So I take 5 levels of rogue with the Cutpurse archetype. Now after those 5 levels of Rogue (Cutpurse) can I then go back and add a different archetype as if I was multiclassing, but keeping the same class only different archetype?

Can I have a character that is rogue (cutpurse) 5/rogue (knife master) 5.

Who is effectively two level 5 rogues
Because with normal multiclassing you can just add a level or however many from a different class as you see fit. If I was a rogue (cutpurse) 5 and wanted 5 levels of bard it would be no problem I would be rogue (cutpurse) 5/bard 5. Having started my 6th level as a level 1 bard.

So I ask does the same mechanics work if you are multiclassing into the same class only a different archetype?

Any help would be much appreciated.

No.

This isn't to be rude to you but I would highly suggest not wading into the deep end when just learning the rules. The archetypes and what not are part of the advanced players guide. I wouldn't recommend it for new players. This isn't to be a snob but instead to point out that there are enough new rules, rule tweaks, twists, and such in the core rulebook to keep new players on their toes without having to worry about extra options that are provided in later books.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Nope you cant multi class the same class regardless of archetypes.

However if the two archetypes dont change the same feature you may take both of them.

I would say yes but it would be a monumental waste of level advancement, especially when you can use multiple archetypes if the character meets the requirements. You just choose what archetype you want to apply at each level.

Thanks I appreciate the feedback. :)

Xabulba, how would you reconcile doubled abilities or, in the case of casters the odd spell level void you get if you take the same spellcasting class twice? I'm considering doing this for a Psion villain and trying to figure out how I would go about doing it. Just spellcasting class + 1 or should I gestalt it or what? Any input?

That post was over 5 years ago. Don't expect a response.

Nope, otherwise you could take 10 levels of 10 Rogue archetypes and have 10d6 sneak attack at 10th level.

Given the high price for that (BAB 0, saves totally lopsided in favor of Reflex, no rogue talents, no evasion etc.), it probably wouldn't cause issues at a table. Well, the character would be incredibly good at Coup de Grace, but a regular level 10 rogue isn't too shabby when it comes to that, anyway.

Unless you are using the Fractional Bonuses rules (Pathfinder Unchained), then you still have a BAB of +7 (Same as a normal level 10 rogue), and your saves are +3/+7/+3, same as the normal rogue.

Pathfinder Maps, Starfinder Adventure Path, Starfinder Maps, Starfinder Roleplaying Game, Starfinder Society Subscriber; Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

If you are being counted as a 1st level Rogue 10 times over instead of as a 10th level Rogue, your BAB would be +0 and your saves would be +0/+20/+0.

if it wasn't for the faq on typeless bonuses to stuff not stacking then you could have a level 20 paladin with 10 times their cha to saves if this was allowed
