Skipping XP alltogether, using hero points instead

Advice

I'm preparing to GM a campaign again for the first time in a long while.

I'll be running Jade Regent, and I'm planning to skip xp and just level up the players at the suggested points throughout the adventure. Thus having one less thing to worry about.

As a substitute for handing out bonus xp when the players do good I was thinking about using the hero point system as rewards for various heroic feats. I'm thinking this could also help a bit with survivability as there are only 3 players, and they are all inexperienced first time players.

Has anybody got any experience negative or positive with either dropping xp, or using hero points? My worries is that dropping xp from the game will make doing things seem less rewarding, and with the hero points I'm a little worried they will never fail an important savingthrow.

I had no issues with it in my group. My players also know I am not stingy with giving levels out either though.

I have never used the hero point system the book has. It is not a bad idea though.

I haven't personally done it, but many of the posters on these boards will tell you that removing experience points from there game has been a good thing (or, at least, a not bad thing). I think that many of them use Hero Points as well to rewards their players. I'm sure somebody else that actually does these things will be along soon enough to tell you how awesome an idea it will be.

Edit: Ninja'd by one of the people I was referring to.

cool cool.

@wraith I'm thinking of the hero points from the APG (I think that's where that optional rule is)

Good to hear removing xp can work.

I think hero points can be used instead of xp for rewarding good roleplaying and great achievements, and also be handy for just three inexperienced players facing my terrible wrath.

Our party all level up at the same time. The reward is the level up not the XP % progress towards a level.

Gold, treasure, magic items, status, cool things happening should be enough.

Hero points as a reward is what I would really like my group to have! I would definitely do it.
