Phalanx Fighter and Buckler

Rules Questions

Greetings,

My questions are :

Can a Phalanx Fighter at 3rd level wield a pole-arm in one hand even when he is using a buckler since it is still a shield?

If the first question is Yes, can the character in question then wield a second weapon (Such as a short sword) in the other hand?

Grand Lodge

Yes and yes. Have you considered the klar?

The Klar?

You know the DM I had when I made the char told me that I couldn't do that... And that he looked it up on the FAQ. I think he was BSing and I was so pissed at the time too...and now I'm even more pissed. I know he did it on purpose.

Phalanx Fighter appears in the Advanced Player's Guide. I don't see anything in the errata page for that product that says anything about the Phalanx Fighter.

That said, I can see the argument that you're not wielding the buckler as a shield when you use your shield arm to wield a weapon per the buckler rules on page 150 of the Core Rulebook, since you're not gaining any shield bonus from it.

Klar, or spiked shield is a less "controversial" option. I guess you are looking to threaten.

I do see a slight argument, but I still don't believe it holds up because I am still wielding it. Just because I don't get the AC bonus if I swing with an off-hander doesn't mean that the sheild breaks or disappears. That would imply that if I were shield bashing with a light or heavy shield without Imp. Shield Bash I'm no no longer wielding a shield because I don't have the Shield bonus till the next round.

I disagree. You're still wielding the light or heavy shield, you're just doing so AS A WEAPON (since you're bashing with it). When you wield a seperate weapon in your buckler hand, you're no longer wielding the buckler, it's simply strapped to your forearm getting in the way.

In general, you might be able to HOLD multiple things with the same hand, but you can only WIELD one per hand at a time. The buckler is like a having a weapon-cord for a shield, you can't drop the shield when you're not using it, but you don't have to spend an action retrieving it either.

If you're considered not wielding a buckler when holding and attacking with a weapon in that hand, do you lose the magical benefits of the buckler that it is enchanted with, such as Fortification? If you do not lose the ability, then you are wielding the buckler, as per RAW, and gain all benefits of doing so.
