That faction card sucks if you don't specifically build your character to complete the objectives. I have one of my characters in the Exchange because I thought it fit his personality. Now every time I sit at a table with him I ask if anyone still has a season 6 faction card so that I can get actually get a faction card that I can complete (at a discount--I'd rather have "no faction" than pay full price to switch).

I say this as someone who is... Relative to darn near every other poster here new to PFS.
I actually like the reward system in theory. In practice it's a mess.
1. The unlockable items cost too much. To choose an unlockable a newish character might have access to, Silverhex costs something like 6000 gold after fulfilling certain conditions. By the time I get that new character anywhere near 6000 gold, I'll have to upgrade my basic armor and gear so the monsters of the next tier don't slaughter me. And this is the basic problem: Items that improve basic survival are more likely to be bought than a high cost item that is far more interesting than simple utility.
2. The unlockables are tailored to either magic classes or melee. There isn't a good mix of both in scenarios.
3. The unlockables that new players can afford are crap (I have so many potions I'm not going to buy).
So what to do? Increasing the gold pay out is one option. Cutting the costs of "unlocked" items by a significant percentage is another.
I think there is another way though. Create new equipment with interesting features geared toward low tier players and make it reasonably priced. Something like a rapier that can do 1d4 elemental damage in addition to regular (so long as the creature is not resistant to said element) a certain number of times a day. Can't be boosted by stuff like inspire courage but can get a boost if the monster is vulnerable to that element.
It adds an interesting element of strategy. Do I use this attack early or do I wait? It also makes knowledge checks more important.
This is just an idea but what I'm getting at is that for unlockables to be any good, they have to be in reach of the player base.

so what your saying is that you joined a faction because it fit your character but since the free card that comes with it provides you with no mechanical bonus now you want to join a new faction?

Yup, that's part of exactly what I'm saying. I'm also saying that if the card is supposed to represent all members of the faction (apparently only merchants join the Exchange) then it's 1) doing a bad job representing all faction members or 2) misrepresenting the faction in such a way that only characters that are a built a certain way actually benefit from being in their faction.

isn't mercantile pursuits exactly what the exchange is all about?

Faction goals from the guide pg18.
Increase the faction’s economic power
by establishing trading partnerships, expanding the
faction’s network of businesses, and undermining rivals.
from the faction card
The Exchange seeks to rule the markets of the Inner Sea. The Exchange’s board of directors merges the independent wealth of Qadiran merchant-nobility and the resourceful cunning of Sczarni smugglers. There are countless ways to earn a fortune, and the Exchange rewards Pathfinders for any number of them. Not all of the Exchange’s dealings are legal or even honorable. Members of the Exchange often must choose between an aggressive approach and a more reputable one, and those choices help to shape the faction’s practice

If you feel that we're misrepresenting one of the factions through the goals on Faction Journal Cards, you're welcome to begin a new thread (or send me an email or private message) suggesting a few ideas for replacement goals and/or rewards. We're revising cards in the early half of this week and still have room to consider other changes.

In my opinion, overall it's too positive. The Sczarni got rolled up into this faction, but there's only one goal that really portrays that.
"Undermine a rival entrepreneur or merchant so that you can claim his market share. Doing so requires a successful
Intimidate or Profession (merchant) check with a DC equal to 15 plus your character level."
Maybe it's my fault for having a character that's not really a merchant in the exchange (i.e. no profession merchant), but I was hoping for more underhanded options, or at least goals that are more in line with what the Sczarni was.

the underhanded part was the intimidate an example
offer he can't refuse
while the profession merchant is more of the legal(ish) way another example.

Most of the goals can be completed by the less scrupulous with only a little stretch. In my opinion, overall it's too positive. The Sczarni got rolled up into this faction, but there's only one goal that really portrays that.

- Go to a trade center and buy or sell
- Recruit a smuggler to cooperate with the faction
- Resolve a combat non-violently with trickery or bribery
- Earn money with your Day Job.
- Speak many different languages
Acquiring a merchant's license is the most out-of-character for a smuggler or enforcer-type. Plus the reward that is wholly based on the Profession(merchant) skill.
In any case, I made a thread if you would like to discuss other options.
